  1. Here's my problem: I had a blind date with a guy who went on and on and on about All the Pretty Horses. I ended up not being able to stand this guy, after just this one date (he was so insufferable), and now I can't read any of McCarthy's books as a result.

    Weird, huh?

  2. So I'm halfway through the audiobook version, and I'm finding it riveting. As I keep telling my Greek friend, as I ask her about some of the Greek themes, it's more of an historical book about a family's emigration to America and their life and assimilation here, than about the hermaphrodite topic. The reader is just fantastic, too, he makes it that much more interesting. Anyone with an immigrant background (my father and his family are from Germany) will identify with the story.

  3. Have you ever considered writing in any other genres? If so, which do you think you'd go for and why?
(I want to know this too:))

And, I was just thinking about this the other day when I saw a new book by the author who wrote a book set in Wisconsin (hey! does your sister live there? my home turf!). Her new one is set in California, and I wondered if authors research their settings or write what they know? Have you been to Alaska?

I like the format of your stuff on line!

  4. Yes, definitely the Book Thief. So well done.

Has anyone else read any of the Maisie Dobbs books? I like the Florence Nightingale aura they have, although WWI instead of the Crimean war, and with realistic problems like brain injury, etc, that people tend to overlook. These books made me realize that death isn't the only awfulness that happens, and also consider the emotional toll on people who weren't fighting but instead taking care of those who did.

  5. I love it when there is an inscription inside a book I've been given as a gift. I like to go back and re-read them, and think about the person who gave it to me. My mom writes a message in all the books she gives me, and I sometimes do the same thing. For my nephew's first Christmas, I gave him a book and had my boyfriend sign it with me, so he knows his Aunt and Uncle!

Ditto! I have always asked for an inscription when a book is given as a gift, and I often keep the card that came along as a bookmark. These gifts are very sentimental to me and deeply treasured.

  6. Bread. If I go for too long without some stodgy bread I begin to go slightly insane.

    And melted cheese, too.

    So, er, pizza.

    Har har!!

Ok..this is embarrassing. I have a thing for, oy, Pringles. I can eat a whole can. And I do get cravings for them, maybe every couple of months. And then afterward I don't feel so good, but other than that, and maybe some chocolate, I don't eat any junk (hard to believe, I know!).

Kell, let me know how that chocolate weaning goes for you:blush:

  7. Thanks. Thanks a lot, people. It's a rainy, crappy day here in New England, and what have I been doing? Watching Ugly Betty...all afternoon! You have only yourselves to blame! I refuse to admit enjoying any of it.

I may have a small thing for Daniel, but I'm only halfway through Season 1.

    :D

  8. I'm having sausages, mashed sweet potatoes, cauliflower, yorkshire pudding, served with onion gravy and bread sauce.

That sounds delicious. Did you cook?

I had tuna on toast, and it was actually pretty yummy, too -- it was an imported tuna packed in oil that I was saving for something special, and still haven't found the time to get to, so I "wasted" it. Very flavorful.

  9. A friend recommended Fablehaven, by Brandon Mull. I really liked it a lot -- it's a very imaginative fantasy book, with enough suspense and scary bits to keep your attention. There was definitely a part that I had to read through covered up eyes while holding my breath.

I have also enjoyed the Golden Compass books, by Philip Pullman.

And the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books, by Ann Brasheres, although I just tried an adult novel of hers and had a really hard time getting through it.

And there's also a series by Louise Rennison, starting with Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging, that a girlfriend and I giggled over recently.

Hope I got all the Amazon links in the right places!:D

  10. Have you tried Mighty Leaf tea? I order all my "good stuff" from them (mightyleaf.com) -- they have the best African rooibos ever, called African Nectar. I just tried a Chai that is so spicy and good. They have a Rainforest Mate' that's awesome and fruity, with a natural pick-me-up that's not caffeine. And the Orchid Oolong is a coconutty greeny oolong that is good hot or iced. Do I sound like a commercial? I just love every tea I've tried from them, and you can get loose or bags. They have lovely single mug strainers even.

I also have PG that I found in the market here, surprisingly, some time back, and a Twinings loose Earl Grey. I like a variety:smile2:

  11. Janet - I listen to mine on my iPod, but I agree, sometimes you get a dodgy reader - but you have to remember they're just regular punters like you and me, not professionals, and they volunteer, rather than get paid. There are some readers on there who are excellent - there's a guy called Chip who has an amazingly expressive voice.

I listen to a lot of audio books, since I have a commute to school (it makes the time go SO MUCH FASTER), and I think there are quite a few professional readers -- like George Guidall (not sure if that's how he spells it) who always reads for Tony Hillerman, and even Jim Dale of the Harry Potters. It's not uncommon to catch an actor reading, too, especially Broadway actors. There are definitely styles I like...and styles I don't like. And it's true if I lose my train of thought I have to find my spot again and start over:smile2: But I think I do that with books, too.

Is this a particular type of audio book that you're getting that has volunteers reading?

  12. I see that you are in Boston, so......the show is on ABC on Thursday nights at 8:00pm. Watch an episode or two and determine for yourself if you like it.

Oh, that explains it -- I've had clinical on Thursday nights for the last two years:( But I'm going to download an episode and see what everyone is talking about. I discovered Freaks and Geeks after it was already off the air, stumbled on it at the video store..I'm guessing Ugly Betty might be similar.

  13. Wonder what the longest is you've had a bottle of wine open and still drank it. For example, because it is late and I am lazy, I am drinking the sauvignon blanc that is open in the fridge instead of just opening another bottle. It's been in there for a WHILE (ok maybe not months, but longer than days).

  14. Howdy -- just wondering if anyone has read this book? I looked and looked and can't find a post about it..and I am dying to hear someone's opinion! I have read such great reviews all over for it, but the one person I know personally (a professor) who read it said it could have been much shorter:blush:

    Thanks very much!
