How was The Snow Child?
I've been absorbed in The Maze Runner and have read around one-third of it.
-
Ooh, 3 more to go!
I hope your mojo behaves itself and helps you get to 100.
-
Just caught up on your thread, Steve. Great reviews, especially of Bradbury and Baxter. I thought I had The Martian Chronicles on my TBR pile but alas I don't. My partner periodically tells me how much he loves The Time Ships and that I really must read it, so it's on my wish list.
-
Melodious, if you enjoy the topic, you might like to read Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach. It's both funny and educational.
-
I'm ready to go! I've been checking the Group Reads section to see if it had started yet and was worried I was missing something.
I'm a late-comer to the party, so I'll let someone else set up the thread.

Looks like you had a lovely birthday, Athena. I really hope you enjoy Gilmore Girls considering you now have the entire collection!
Nice haul from the book fair. I was lucky enough to see Neil Gaiman live early this year. He read out part of Fortunately the Milk, and it was great. I've been wanting to read the entire story since then (of course he stopped just as it was getting really interesting
).

Hi Melodious, a belated welcome to the forum.
We have rather similar tastes in reading, so I look forward to reading your reviews and progress. I loved Atlas Shrugged and I tend to agree with your opinion about Rand's philosophy. I have half a dozen or so books by and about Rand on my TBR pile. I'd like to read The Fountainhead next.
I really loved The Picture of Dorian Gray, but I remember there was one excruciatingly dull chapter and I certainly understand why you didn't like the characters. I recently saw a production of The Importance of Being Earnest, which I loved.

I've read quite a bit of Not That Kind of Girl already. It's excellent! It has been a while since I've stayed up reading in bed until the wee hours.
-
I'm looking forward to seeing it too, Ian!
-
Oh, maybe she has read the book, yes! That didn't cross my mind
I guess it's just that I would think that whoever will read the book will love it and make it known on here
And so far I think I've only come across you and tunn300!
What am I...chopped liver? I enjoyed Gold too, ya know!
I've missed this whole thread until now.
But I was both sick and busy on the weekend, so I wouldn't have been able to join in anyway. Glad you all had a good time.

I've been watching a quirky TV series I found on DVD in a charity shop called The Book Group. Up to episode 4 now it's funny that the disparate characters talk about everything else except the books they are supposed to have read. It's growing on me. Has anybody else seen this? I don't know when it was on the telly.
I saw a few episodes years ago. I liked it but haven't been able to catch it again.

I received two books in the mail today:
Lena Dunham Not That Kind of Girl
Richard Flanagan The Narrow Road to the Deep North
-
Just watched the most recent episode of The Big Bang Theory.
-
Has anybody ever seen The Fall? Such a beautiful film, a real labour of love. I think it took about 5 years to make and all the locations are real (not cgi) which is more astounding.
This looks lovely.
I must seek it out.

Yes, I totally agree with Chrissy. Start from the beginning...but don't stop this time!

You should be able to add a cover, yes. But I think you have to be a GR librarian. Are you one?
This brings up something I've been ranting about (to myself) just recently. I'm always very careful to select the edition with my cover when I add a book to GR. Recently I was going through all of my listed books there to remove a few that I no longer own, and I noticed that a huge number of them have completely different covers to what they had when I first added them. So why do I bother adding one edition when people just go in and apparently change the cover to suit themselves? Grrr! It makes me so annoyed. I'm definitely not going to bother fixing it all again. I'll still update my 'currently reading' and stuff, but I only rely on Book Collectorz now because no one else can change my covers.
-
No help, me, am I?
No help whatsoever.
I actually thought I had Dry on my TBR pile, but I didn't see it listed. I must have gotten confused by seeing you mention it around the forum before.

The story about the woman in your home town is just awful.
Why do people always feel the need to involve their children? There was a story in Australia recently about a man who killed his wife and children and then himself. And they had been known to everyone around them as a strong and loving family.
It happens way too often.
It's a shame your flatmate is leaving you in the lurch, but maybe it would be better to have someone else who is not so self-involved. I hate people like that! Any type of relationship should be about both giving and receiving.
Thanks Athena! I was so fed up with it all yesterday, that I had to vent in this thread. I also wanted to write about it on here because those things have been one reason for why I've not been so active on here lately. Starting to reply to thread and respond to things feels just so exhausting sometimes, especially if it's a 'deeper' conversation and needs more time to mull over and write about.
I completely understand the first part! I wish I had more time to devote to the forum and have proper conversations.

(I actually had a dream just a week ago where I read on the forum that Kylie was planning a trip to Finland and she went over the itinerary on the general board and she hadn't mentioned any of it to me! I was so gutted, I thought she didn't want to see me at all!
)
About the Moomin books: yeah, we need to get a grip! I don't remember if it was before or after reading your post, but I happened to go and check the Moomin books just some time ago, and I particularly went for the first book in the series. I read the blurb and couldn't finish
It made me yawn
Crap... It doesn't bode well, does it. Innit!
It's probably just the names of the 'weird' creatures. Do you know, someone recently asked me if I knew why the Moomins are so plump. I said I didn't have the faintest idea. Well, apparently it's because they don't have any of the natural ... ahem... watering holes... And so they can't let out... anything. Everything stays in.
What a mean person I am! Maybe I didn't tell you because I was hoping to surprise you? But that would mean I had a bizarre memory lapse and forgot that you were on the forum and would see what I wrote about Finland! Heh.
Oh, poor Moomins! They really are enjoyable to read about. And how could you not want to read about creatures that are plump because they can't poop?!
And um... yes... Oliver Jeffers is totally my type, looks wise
That's putting it mildly!
As soon as I saw the pic that Kay posted, I thought 'ooh, he looks like Frankie's type!' Yay, I know your 'type'!
So today I PMd Kylie about the book and said I'd borrowed it from the library. And she says she'd just ordered the book online yesterday. What a coincidence! We started going through the time differences and I actually had the receipt of the library loan, which I'd torn into pieces, but I now put it together to see just when exactly I'd borrowed it, to see how close it was to the time when Kylie had placed the order. I was only about 5 hours behind her!
What a funny coincidence.
Here's the book:
Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's "Learned"
I was so disappointed when I got home today and the book wasn't waiting for me.
I'm sure it'll be here tomorrow though.
And don't forget to mention that it was you who introduced me to Girls and Lena Dunham! You turned me into a huge fan.
Thanks!

Bargain!
OK Frankie, as you know, I've only read Running with Scissors so far. Which Burroughs do you think I should read next? I have Sellevision, A Wolf at the Table, Magical Thinking and You Better Not Cry: Stories for Christmas (not sure when I'll get around to reading my next Burroughs, but Christmas is a possibility).
-
I wouldn't mind seeing it too, Frankie, but I'll probably wait until it's on TV or something. I guess you noticed that Adam from Girls is in it?

It's not a meme, but it is a cute bookish picture I saw on twitter today … I want stairs like these!
Gorgeous!
Oh, I do like those stairs. It makes me feel tempted to go rip off the carpet from ours stairs and get a'painting!
Ha. Me too! But I think I'll keep this in mind for my future 'dream house' (although my dream house only has one level...) My current house is not worthy of such loveliness.
What exactly is a book meme?
Would this qualify?
Haha. This is terrific! I'm going to pinch this for my Facebook page if you don't mind.
This is a perfect example of a book meme.
That's a little bit disappointing! I was hoping it'd be more
.
Yes, you would hope so, wouldn't you? Luckily you are a fast reader and could surely read at least 4 times that number?

Ben!
Watch it watch it watch it!!

YAY!!! I can't wait to hear your thoughts.
The Maze Runner - James Dashner

Oops, I didn't realise we'd be reading all three! I only have the first two books, but I'm pretty sure I have the third one in the ebook format.
I assume we'll be using spoiler tags in case one of us is ahead of the others? Just in case, I haven't included any spoilers below.
I've read about one-third of The Maze Runner so far (up to chapter 20). There's a lot of mysteries that make it a real page-turner, so I'm really rather enjoying it and eager to find out what happens next.
So far, the only gripe I have is with some (or most) of the characters' reactions to things, which I find a little odd and jarring. For instance, one second Thomas appears to really like Chuck, and then a couple of seconds later he seems to despise him. Also, characters like Alby and Newt appear sort of friendly one moment and then angry the next, for virtually no reason. Maybe teenage boys are just like this?
I don't know. It just doesn't ring true for me. I just try to ignore it and carry on.
OK, I have another gripe. The Grievers seem a little silly to me. Scary, but silly.
Does anyone have any theories as to what the maze is all about and why the characters are there?
