Yeah, I'm not sure why they did that
. I shall have to look out for Topher Grace, I hadn't heard of him until you mentioned him
.
He's best known for playing Eric Forman on That 70s Show a few years back.

What a fantastical coinkydink! I wonder how you came up with the letter J and not I instead?
Because J comes before L, of course!
And it didn't make sense to check out L authors once I made the amazingly random discovery of the J book.

We've been rewatching the Spider-Man films (not to be confused with the The Amazing Spider-Man films, I haven't seen those but I have heard they weren't that great), from 2002-2007, we've seen 1 (2002) and 2 (2004) now, we're hoping to see 3 (2007) in one of the next few days. We planned on watching it yesterday but I was too tired. So far they've been nice to watch.
Spider-Man 2 was on TV here the other day, so I watched it (I've seen it at couple of times before). I don't mind Spider-Man 3, mostly because Topher Grace is in it.
I don't think I've seen The Amazing Spider-Man movies yet. It bugs me that they did another version so soon after the Tobey Maguire ones.

I think my last name is going to make this a bit more difficult for me than some of you others, my last name starting with a K
Stephen King was the only author I could come up with without looking at my TBR list! Oh and Sophie Kinsella, but I don't have any books by her that I haven't yet read. (And I don't want to do a re-read)
I think you should be allowed to go for a letter to either side of K. Hmm, I wonder if you have any books starting with a J? Oh, I know! What about The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster? What a coinkydink!

3. Read someone else's favourite book - Whose and what book??! Phantom Tollbooth??
(But is it Kylie's absolute favorite, though?)
It's one of my absolute favourites.
The cover is also mostly blue (if you have the same edition I do) so it would fit the first criteria as well!
"A fanny pack, belt pack, belly bag, buffalo pouch, hip sack, phanny pack, waist bag, waistpack, butt pack (US), waist wallet (Canada),Snatchel, hip pack (UK), belt bag (Philippines), bum bag (UK, Ireland, South America), Kangaroo and Koala (Australia, New Zealand), or moon bag (South Africa), is a small fabric pouch usually secured with a zipper and worn by use of a strap around the hips or waist."
I've only ever heard of the fanny pack and bum bag. And apparently it was called fanny pack because people used wear it at the back. I love the names Kangaroo and Koala and moon bag
Hmm, never ever heard it called either of those things in Australia. We call it a bum bag.

Aw, that's very sad news. I loved her singing. RIP.

We watched the first two seasons of The Newsroom. Wow. Just Wow!!
It's awesome, isn't it? Such a shame they only did a short season for season 3.
Watched ep 9 of Wayward Pines last night.
Am I the only one who cheered when Theresa slapped the teacher woman?
Pretty sure you weren't.
-
I've been catching up on Wayward Pines and UNReal (an awesome show).
-
Love the quote from Bonfiglioli.
I've had the Bandini Quartet on my TBR pile for years. Must get around to reading it!
-
It was a joke.
You got me good! I believed you.
Thank goodness you were only joking. (Naughty Muggles
)

Please tell me that was a joke, Muggles!

Different in a good way: I expected it to hardish going and with its feet firmly placed in the mis-lit genre. In fact, I've ripped through it, and finished it this morning. A superb read - quirky, humorous, whilst still not ducking some darker moments. Her intercutting with fairy stories was interestingly challenging - not sure quite how they were all meant to work, but they got me thinking. In fact, a complete revelation! Following that is going to be difficult, but I'm going to start with The Shipping News, and see how that goes.
Great! Thanks for letting me know.
I've read a chapter or two of my Alan Bradley book, but I haven't had much time for reading lately.

I agree!
I know they say that it was disastrous the first time they told everyone, but how can they not see that it's just as bad by being so secretive?! I don't quite buy that kids can be so OK with it but their parents would freak out.
-
That's so interesting! I might have to add this to my wishlist.

Catching up on Wayward Pines, up to ep 8. It's getting dumber and dumber
It's pretty far-fetched, but I like it! And I love that they started revealing the big secrets only 4 or 5 episodes in. I was afraid it would be like Lost or something!

I'm taking a break from The Hound of the Baskervilles and reading Nana by Emile Zola. I'm really enjoying it so far!
I've been wanting to read Nana for ages. Glad to hear it's going well.
I started reading Tinseltown: Murder, Morphine, and Madness at the Dawn of Hollywood by William J. Mann. I've been intimidated by its size but because I need to return it to the library in a week I thought I must give it a go now. And it's been very readable!
Very interesting, too.
Ooh, this sounds like an interesting read! Can't wait to read your review.
Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, which is already proving to be very different to what I had expected (my prejudices do seem to be catching up with me!).
Is it different in a good way or a bad way? Or perhaps neither? What I'm trying to ask is, are you enjoying it?
Not too much bookish activity for me, unfortunately. Unless you count the fact that I bought a new desk and it has two bookshelves in it.
-
Thanks everyone. N has securely attached my bookcases to the wall now. The damaged one is mostly fine, but when we were putting the shelves in we realised that it has bowed a bit near the top. The shelves don't quite extend to the sides now, but I can work around that by just using long nails to hold them up. It should be fine! I'm looking forward to putting my books back in this weekend.
I'm so glad Jasper is okay! I hope the book case will be okay too
. Such a nice photo of Jasper with your books
. I hope you enjoy your new reads. The floor looks nice! I'm curious, was it nice in Jamie's Italian? I've watched him in cooking shows and I have some of his cooking books, is the food any good?
I love Jamie's Italian. I've been about half a dozen times now and never been disappointed. And the food is quite reasonably priced considering the 'brand name' behind it. I don't often watch his cooking shows or own any of his books, so I'm not a fan as such, but I like his restaurants.
The staff are always super friendly too. I'm not sure whether they're all backpackers or whether they've just been 'imported' from England, but most of them are British and very nice.
Jasper is such a beaut!
I LOVE Jamie's Italian - the squid with garlic dip is gorgeous.
Aw, thanks.
I'm not sure whether we have the same menu, but do you have polenta chips there? They're yummo. And I always try to keep room for the brownie. So good! They put some sort of sticky popcorn with it, which I'm not super keen on, but I didn't want to leave it behind, so as I tried to cut it with my spoon, some of it when flying off through the air—we were sitting upstairs overlooking other diners, so I was mortified that they would think I had thrown my food at them, but I later found it smushed it on the bottom of my shoe.
Can't take me anywhere...
I had a similar thing happen to me when I was small. My older brother had shown me how you could pull out drawers to make them into steps, which I duly tried out (not the first time I got into strife by copying my brother
). My chest of drawers had a cupboard sitting on top. Luckily, I had opened the doors of the cupboard for some reason, so when I climbed the 'stairs' and the entire thing came toppling down on top of me, I was more or less protected by the space in the cupboard. And I fell back onto my bed, so I had a soft landing. Lesson learned!
It's a good thing cats are so fast or he really could have been squashed.
He left the room before it had even come halfway down, I think! I, on the other hand, was frozen to the spot while it all happened. Cat reflexes: 1, human reflexes: 0.

EL Doctorow has passed away at the age of 84.

Red Dawn (2012) ~ I didn't watch it all
I watched the original on TV recently. Is the remake any good?
-
Just finished Never Look Away
What to read next, that is the question!
Would I be too predictable if I said The Phantom Tollbooth?

So, after getting home from a lovely but tiring day, I was relaxing on the lounge when I looked up and noticed Jasper sitting on top one of my large bookcases. The bookcase is empty at the moment and not bolted to the wall since we moved it back in after my renovation. We left it like that because I haven't yet decided on their final location (I've rearranged the room again). Jasper got up there once before and I noticed it moving a little too much for my liking, but then he jumped off and everything was fine. But last night as I went to get up (slowly, so as not to alarm Jasper), he jumped off anyway and the entire bookcase came crashing down after him (he's fine).
What's worse is that this was one of my bookcases with glass doors, and of course it went down face first. There was nothing I could do except watch it fall heavily onto my nice new floors. I thought for sure there'd be a massive mess from the broken glass, but it didn't break! Who says IKEA doesn't make good-quality stuff?! Better still, it looks like no damage has been done to my floor!
I managed to lift it up and place it back against the wall (the bookcase alone is quite heavy, but the addition of two glass doors makes it much, much heavier) but I noticed that it wouldn't stand upright by itself again. I'm not quite sure why. There's a large crack in the wood on one side (it's worse than it looks in the below pic), but everything else seems to be OK. N is going to come over today and bolt all the bookcases to the wall. In the meantime I've laid the bookcase on the floor so it can't tip over. I hope it will be usable again once we bolt it to the wall.
Oh, and there's my new flooring and a bit of my painted wall in the background.

My Mum is in town for a week so we've been busy. We booked a holiday to New Zealand for later this year (three weeks in late October/early November). We're so excited to go.
Neither of us has been before.
Yesterday we went to Sydney for the day. We had lunch at Jamie's Italian (Jamie Oliver's restaurant) and then went book shopping.
I've been pretty good lately so I decided to splurge a bit as a reward.
I had a gift voucher and some reward points, so it didn't cost too much. My purchases:
Ben Aaronovitch Rivers of London #5: Foxglove Summer
Boris Akunin Erast Fandorin #5: Special Assignments
Ernest Cline Ready Player One
Andrey Kurkov The Gardener from Ochakov
Andrey Kurkov The Milkman in the Night
I thought I'd take a picture of my books, and as I was getting ready, Jasper woke up and stood up, so I thought I'd get him in the picture. Here he is, half asleep:
I'm very happy with my purchases (although I would have been just a bit happier if they'd had Penguin Lost by Kurkov, as that's the next one of his that I really want to read). And I was thrilled to find Akunin's books in the store, as I haven't seen them in shops before. And Kay, look! The evil Turkish Gambit cover is everywhere! I've just sent the publishers an email and (nicely) demanded to know why I can't find the 'correct' cover anywhere. I hope I get an answer! (By the way, after I took the photo I moved The Winter Queen so it was before TTG. I didn't fix the rest, but I think they're mostly in the wrong order.)
After the bookshop we went to Adriano Zumbo's and bought some cakes (one of the meringues is for N).
All in all, a great day!

Why don't you put it outside in the courtyard. Use is as a surface. Put some tiles down on both sides and set it up as a table, and put flower pots on it. Or somefink!
Hmm, that's not a bad idea!
Wow, N is being so helpful! That's so nice
!! I'm glad progress is going really well. Will you be posting photos of when things are done? I've never seen a photo of your book shelves before, I'd love to see some
.
Yes, I'll post some pics at some stage. I've only partially moved stuff in and things are a bit messy, but I'll try to clean it up a bit and take some pics.
It looks pretty good, if I do say so myself!
Haha Kylie, I had a dream about you last night
I was visiting you and we were upstairs and you had two big bookcases there, covering on whole wall and it was where you kept your children's books and YA and there was loads of books
(Can't remember much about the dream. The next thing I remember was that I got all the seasons of Dexter for myself and I was so psyched about starting to watch the show!!
)
Hehe.
Wow, how lovely of N.
Yes, it was!
-
Heh. The pictures are funny, and the serious comments correcting the mistakes are even funnier.
