Thank you! *bows* I was very pleased by how quickly I found it, given that it appears to be out of print.
-
Straight after I posted here, I went searching for a copy and found one cheap on ebay. Bought it.
Hearst fascinates me.
-
I wonder if there's a real bio on Patty Hearst. Should probably look it up, her story seems pretty intriguing and unusual!
She wrote one herself! Goodreads reviews here.

There is nothing missing in the single-volume book. The single-volume book is generally larger, so it fits more text on the page. The stories are exactly the same.
The same goes for all books. Different editions of the same book usually have a different number of pages due to the size of the text, the size of the page, margin size etc. There are many factors involved.
ETA: Oops, didn't see Chrissy's reply.

And yes, I think you are raising the subject because I've been talking about me not reading sci-fi/fantasy and all that, but I guess I do, more than I think! So haha, I'm not as prejudiced as I, or some other people, might think!
You're a puzzle, Frankie!
You keep saying you don't care for sci-fi/fantasy but you seem to like everything you've seen/read!
Aww. You could've just lied and said yes to being a natural pro
I cannot tell a lie.
I have a few games on my iPad for when I am on the go!Ooh, I might have to talk to you more about this away from Frankie's thread.
No not as of yet, the books made a huge impact on me when I read them and I don't want to mess with that by watching the movie, in case I don't like it.When you say the last three, do you mean the Ellie chronicles? I read the first one (While I Live and wasn't overly impressed like with the original seven, so stayed away from the other two.
I know what you mean about the movie, but I was just way too curious to see it. I haven't read the book since I saw the movie, but I don't think it will affect my enjoyment at all.
Yes, I mean the Ellie Chronicles. I agree they're not as good as the Tomorrow series, but they're still quite good. I mostly enjoyed them less because they introduced new characters and our beloved friends from the earlier books did not feature quite as much.
I was particularly dismayed by the events in the first chapter of While I Live, and there was another scene (in the first or second book) that rather disturbed me.
When do you plan on coming back to visit again Frankie? You guys must of had a ball! Sitting around, talking books, eating chocolate, visiting book stores!
She's making me go to visit her before she comes back here!
Yep, we had a great time.
I introduced her to Rocky Road, Pavlova and Eucalyptus Oil, which she loved, and Vegemite (the least said about that the better!)
-
I love it when we're both right. It's much more enjoyable than when I'm right and you aren't, but you think you are.
Hardy har har...dream on, Frankie!
You know I have a reputation for being right all the time (a well-deserved reputation, I might add).
But would you mind doing mine for me?You could read DADoES and let me know if it's any good
Well, I went with Chrissy's suggestion and started reading We, but maybe DADoES won't be far behind.
Nice purchases! So tell me, how did the book shopping go yesterday, pretty please? I'm very curious!
Yep, I went shopping and did reasonably well. I'll post my list eventually, once I get my other recent purchases sorted. I'm so disorganised!
I'm amazed I've read 18 of the books on that list. Yay, go me!
So... you don't care about the challenge, but still looked at the list and counted the titles you've read
Mmmm'kay
Hehehe. Maybe you should post the link to the 1001 challenge, Frankie. That'll keep him busy for a while.
-
I haven't consciously been choosing books from the list, but I did recently finish Rescuing Patty Hearst, which isn't actually about Patty Hearst. I'll post my thoughts about it in my reading thread eventually.
-
I had them all in one book, but I never read one story after the other. It's a bit unwieldy if you want to carry it around with you. I have since given it away and have been gradually buying the single books for future re-reads.
-
Yep, it's a novelisation of the TV series. I loved that show!! There are a series of the books, this book I bought is the first one I think and it explains what happened before. Or well, I'm not exactly sure yet. But yeah, it's about the show
Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell make a mighty fine book cover
Now, don't laugh, because I'm probably way off base (given your aversion to the genre) but the title Quantum Leap sounds a bit sci-fi to me...? Or is it maybe a cop/crime show?
Me? Who? What? I don't understand...
Well I don't know what is happening, but you nailed it this time
I think my Finnish is rubbing off on you in some telepathic way. Or you are just a natural but was too scared to try before because you were worried you might make mistakes. Which you obviously don't
I wish it was one of those things, but unfortunately I think I just got lucky because I was just pronouncing it phonetically, which I think wouldn't work with too many Finnish words.
-
Oh, a sauna sounds great right about now. I'm snuggled under my blanky and just had a hot chocolate to keep warm.
Wow, you're doing hard labour! Sounds like nice weather for it though.
Shame you didn't find many books on your trip, but you've got some shops to visit too, right? I hope you have better luck.
-
It wasn't lovely, I had too little time and I didn't have any ideas. So I got a few lights books. Rebecca, Howards End Is on the Landing, The Day of the Triffids, Quantum Leap, and hm, was there anything else... can't remember at the moment. We'll see what happens!
Well, I don't know much about Quantum Leap (wasn't that a TV show or something?) but I approve of the first three choices.
It's true, I haven't read it yet =( But Kylie, I believe you haven't read your Finnish titles either, and I only gave you two!Don't change the subject, missy!
Hey, you got it right! I'm not sure if there would be much of a difference between mez and mess. Hehe, you are learning Finnish already!Woohoo! I rock.
I'm usually the worst ever at pronunciation.
-
I'm not sure what replaced it (I better go back and check
). I just stuck to the two upper floors on my visit.
I'm not even sure that they have a separate section for westerns. In fact, I'm sure they don't. Do your bookshops have separate sections for westerns?
-
Ah, I was wondering about the date after reading the bits you quoted, but I didn't want to ask in case you had to look it up (which I could have done myself anyway). Thanks for answering my unasked question!
-
Hey Steve, I went to a 3-level bookshop in Sydney last night and noticed that the sci-fi/fantasy section, which has always been hidden away downstairs, has now been moved to the middle (main) floor. I thought of you and VF and Timstar and thought you'd all be pleased to know that the genre has been brought out into the open.

I do love buying books! Games also. You could say I'm a hoarder... but I prefer the term collector
I look at it this way, I don't drink and I don't smoke, so I buy books and games instead.
That's how I always justify it, too.
I like computer games but sadly never have time to play.
The closest I get these days is playing game apps on my iPad.
ok well, I'm not sure if you have read the series, but John Marsdens Tomorrow when the war began YA series was a huge hit with me. I still have all the books, and must of read them at least seven times. The first book got turned into a movie (I do remember talking about that with someone on here). That was me, I think! Have you seen the movie yet? If I remember correctly, you hadn't seen it yet and were wondering what it was like? I've read them all at least seven times too.
Actually, maybe not the last three.
I'm not sure if you know this, but Frankie actually came to visit me a couple of years ago. While she was here I gave her some Aussie books to read, including, of course, Tomorrow, When the War Began (my generosity didn't quite extend to buying all 10 books!) She hasn't read it yet (
), but maybe she will now that we are both on her case. Hey, Frankie, you should pack this to take with you!
Much like Fumes but with an N? That's how I think its pronounced
Ah, OK. It will always be Ner-mez to me.
-
I've only seen bits of Giant and I have Rebel Without a Cause on DVD (yet to watch it). I'd love to see East of Eden once I've read the book.
-
Nice review, Bree. I could have sworn I had this on my TBR pile, but apparently I don't. Well, I'd still like to read it one day. I think the positive points you made outweigh the bad for me.
-
LOL, nice enthusiasm, everyone!
Kell, are you going to do your usual summing up of the various entrants? I occasionally watch bits and pieces, but we usually get delayed coverage (as in, delayed by a week!) so if you think there's any bands particularly worth watching, I'd love to hear your views and of course your predictions on who will win.
Eurovision is a strange thing for me. I usually feel like the differences between us (Oz) and Europe are relatively small, but Eurovision makes me feel very much like a foreigner.
-
I liked the Redford version too, although I haven't seen it in quite a while. A lot of people seem to dislike it, though. I didn't even know there was another version (Stephens). Must look into that.
-
Yeah, me too.
How far did you get?
-
Oh, but what a lovely dilemma to have!
Perhaps you could take The Phantom Tollbooth and finish reading it? It's a nice light story and won't take up much room.
Have fun in Nurmes and good luck with your book search! When will you be back? By the way, how do you pronounce Nurmes? I have a way of pronouncing it but I just know it's wrong!
-
I saw an ad for this on TV the other night. It'll be starting here soon and I'll definitely be checking it out.
Wow, I posted this in last January and the show only started here last week. That means they were plugging the show for 5 months before they aired it! Ridiculous.
Anyway, I've watched the first two eps now. It's a bit slow, but given Noll's extensive hype (
), I'm going to keep watching it because I know it must get better.
-
Glad you're enjoying it so much, Ben.

How was Patty?!
Hmm, 'twas OK. Maybe not as great as I was expecting (I did, after all, think it was about Patty Hearst!) It was interesting but I felt it could have been fleshed out a lot more. I think this might be worthy of an actual review in my thread, if I ever get around to it!

Aww, I'm glad you have such fond memories. But I think you forgot to mention one of your favourite things...bogans!
And what about Tassie Devils?
Actually, that's another instance of me not telling a lie.
Well get yourself IN the loop, woman!
I'm sure you won't regret it!
You poor Finn.
I still can't believe you don't have KFC. I might go and have some today in your honour (any excuse!)
Yep, Iced VoVos. I didn't remember you liking them so much. The other biccies are Mint Slices.
That Pringles slogan is one of the truest advertising things I've ever seen. Mmm...
Haha.
Is The Orchid Thief the book you bought when you were here but didn't enjoy?
