  1. I would like to bump this topic. I hear the odd chilling story about the situation in North Korea, and I'd like to learn more. I'm specifically after non-fiction accounts of what life is like there (preferably life for the country as a whole rather than one person's account, but I'm open to the latter too). I'm not so much interested in the political situation, but feel free to recommend those too.

Basically, similar books to what Talisman has recommended above. :)

  2. :)

Strangely, for the second last collection, which came out in 2008, the Book Depository calls it 'the third and final collection'. I guess he changed his mind!

I really like the covers of the books, too (as shown in the link). I like the sort of dull colours with the circles and outline of Hornby's head. :)

  3. If you don't like the title of the book, it looks like it has also been published under the name More Baths, Less Talking. I found out when I went to add it to my wish list at the Book Depository. When I went to Goodreads to try and confirm whether they were the same book, I found out that there are four books about his reading! How did we miss the other two?! Here's the list.

  4. Yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed JS&MN! Thrilled, in fact. :D

As much as I hate hearing about books being ruined, I had to chuckle when I pictured JS&MN becoming twice its usual size after getting soaked. Goodness me, that must have made it even more difficult to read!

On the subject of editions, I originally read the all-in-one volume, but I picked up a three-volume set later when I found it for a cheap price. Next time I read it, I will definitely read the shorter books. I'm sure it was only released that way for the convenience of readers (wasn't Lord of the Rings originally one volume, but it's now traditionally three volumes to make it easier to read?)

  5. I saw this book the other day in a bookshop and immediately thought: 'I must tell Frankie about this!' I hadn't seen this thread so didn't realise you already knew about it. I'm interested in reading it too. :)

  6. I have a vague feeling that the Jungle Book might have been a Reading Circle book once upon a time.   :)   The name Rikki Tikki Tavi rings a bell with me.  Is it a mongoose?

Yes, I recall reading it as part of a reading circle. I have to say, I agree with your review, Bobblybear. I actually hated The Jungle Book and it has the dubious honour of being one of my least favourite/most hated books of all time.

I also agree with your review of the brilliant The Grapes of Wrath. So glad you enjoyed it. :)

  7. Ah yes, I remember when the weather saved you! But unfortunately the history books don't show that. :)

I was on an ill-timed weekend away, so I missed three full days. :( I caught the end though, yay! I'm really starting to dislike Mitchell Johnson. What a prat. Does he think he looks all tough with his tatts and mo/goatee? Grr.

Glad to see the Aussies finally winning. Hope we can make it 3-0 (and then of course 5-0, but let's not get ahead of ourselves! ;)).

  8. I liked that, until I read 'has she forgotten how old she is'. You mean how YOUNG I am, right?!

Um, sure. That's exactly what I meant.  :out:

Even though you're only older than me by a couple of months, I love it because I can always make 'old' jokes about you. Mwahahaha!  :giggle2:

Maybe it's a phase all 31'ers go through :o Oh yay, we are part of something!   How old is Rory now. Hm. I bet she had the same thing!

    Let's start a club!

Hmm, good question. I'm not sure how old Rory would be, so let's just say she's our age. ;) What I find scary is that we are nearly the same age that Lorelai was when she had Rory! :o When did we change from being Rory to being Lorelai?!

I went into the men's loo by mistake this week in my local supermarket :blush2: I've used the loo there before so why I got it wrong I don't know. I didn't want to use the loo I wanted the mirror and the good lighting (to check my eye for the lens) but firstly I was baffled because I'd seen a lady go in but she wasn't there and then the smell indicated to me that something was wrong  ..

    Hahaha! Oh Poppyshake!  :friends3:

Maybe he has a reputation to think of, maybe his rogue friends would start cussing him if they found out he reads books.

Maybe he was reading a self-help book like Jess was!

I agree, getting a cup of coffee is good  And, you will also be able to tell if the man drinks coffee or not... Coffee is good! (But I suppose I couldn't go ahead and discriminate against tea drinkers... )

I'm glad you don't discriminate against non-coffee and non-tea drinkers, otherwise we couldn't be friends! :(

Love, love, love "besserwisserism"!  Had to google it.....fantastic!  No, you don't want that.

Yes, thank you for introducing me to this word too! :D

  9. I've also just bought Gulp by Mary Roach. I've read all of her books and found them very entertaining, so hopefully this will be the same. Half the enjoyment is due to her style of delivering the information with a lot of humour. :haha:

Ooh, jealous! I completely agree about her writing style. :)

I've just ordered A Christmas Carol, I've not read any Dickens and I'm not a big classics fan but I'm feeling a bit left out as so many of you have read it! :)

I really hope you enjoy it! It's probably my favourite story of all time. It's so lovely, and told so well!

  10. ( Note to self : Christmas is a time of giving,  :guess:     so stop GIVING gifts to yourself ) ... Grumble..Grumble...

I don't think there's any rules about *who* you have to give to, Julie, so I think you're doing Christmas just right! ;)

I could give lessons in it .. I think though that Alan views books like sedatives :giggle: if he throws the odd one my way then it might keep me calm and happy for a few more weeks

Aha! There's our first (and possibly most important) lesson. Make our partners, parents, children, siblings etc think that we will only be quiet and happy as long as they keep giving us books. :D

You are very wise, O Poppyshake. post-3835-0-37409100-1386493688.gif

I think, despite the empty pockets, that Christmastime is a time for giving to yourself as well as everyone else .. after all you absolutely know what you want so there's no guesswork involved  :D We need little rewards

I'm glad you said that, because I've been busy giving to myself all weekend!

Alan did them up this morning and let me glance at them for five mins .. though no touching :( They look like books .. they all seem to be the same size and there's six of them so possibly a set of something. They're larger than a normal paperback so I'm guessing they're hardbacks though I can't be sure. He's hidden them away now  I wouldn't snoop but he's taking no chances   ... I'm excited now  I think  .. there weren't any sequels to Carter Beats the Devil were there?

I love how you've carefully analysed the presents. And I love that Alan let you look at them for 5 minutes and then hid them from you. :giggle:  What a cute birdie on the top!

I don't believe there are any sequels to Carter Beats the Devil, but...

ETA:  I hope it's not six identical copies of Carter Beats the Devil:giggle:

    :haha:

  11. You are welcome!

I am bummed I missed this sale, like you with the last one, I was sick and missed most of it. :(

Glad to hear there were less cook books this time around. Was a fair few last sale.

Nice haul too by the way.

Aw, sorry you missed it, but just think of the All Books for Less sale that is coming up! :) I hope you get a great haul there! Is that on this weekend?

Good haul there! . I loved Seneca's On the Shortness of Life  , very sensible philosophy.

Thanks Marie. I'm glad you enjoyed Seneca. It sounds like the kind of philosophy I need in my life right now!

    Nice haul :)!

    Thanks Athena!

In recent reading news, I have picked up Walter Moers' Rumo & His Miraculous Adventures. I started reading this last year but put it down for quite a long time because of my lack of reading mojo. Luckily Moers is such a brilliant storyteller that I haven't forgotten anything that I read last year. :)

I am going on a short trip to Canberra tomorrow and returning on Sunday. There is an exhibition of maps at the National Library of Australia, which looks awesome (I love maps!) I've never been to the National Library before (shame on me!) so I'm looking forward to the visit.

I'm also going to make it a very bookish weekend. There are loads of bookshops in Canberra, but I've never had time to visit most of them because I'm usually busy with the book fair. I've made a list of the shops I want to visit and I'll see how many I can get to before I have to come home. :) I'm making this trip alone because this is a trip for hardcore book lovers, and as much as my BF loves books, I don't think he'd cope with so many shops.

I'm also planning on visiting some markets there. I'm not usually very fond of markets, but these are supposed to be quite good, and their Christmas stalls are starting up this weekend, so maybe I'll find some cute or unique things. :)

  12. I was going through old pictures of myself and friends last night.. And I thought wow, I've been young and happy, haven't I... I've been dreading my upcoming Bday for a long time, thinking turning 33 is horrid, but then I do the math again and think 'oh yeahhh, I'm only going to turn 32, I'm only 31 now...' And somehow it's easier.

Before I got to the second half of this, I was like 'What? I'm sure Frankie's only turning 32! Has she forgotten how old she is?'  :haha:

I had the same thing happen with my Mum the other day. We were talking on the phone and I casually mentioned my age as 32 and Mum didn't even say anything. It was only after we had both hung up that we remembered I'm 'only' 31. Haha. We decided that I must have been rounding up my age to the nearest birthday.

  13. I don't know if the Book Depository has a better selection of books in this sale, or maybe it's just that I'm paying more attention, but there have been lots of excellent books in my opinion. :) There seems to have been a lot fewer cookbooks and activity books. Some of the books haven't even been selling out, or they've at least been taking nearly the full half an hour to sell out (and they're good books!) I missed a couple of hours of deals because I had a blackout at home and couldn't access the site ( :() but so far I have bought:

Anthony Hope Rupert of Hentzau (Penguin Classic)

Patricia Chapman Meder The True Story of Catch-22: The Real Men and Missions of Joseph Heller's 340th Bomb Group in World War II

Stephanie Pain Farmer Buckley's Exploding Trousers and Other Odd Events on the Way to Scientific Discovery

Simon Rich The Last Girlfriend on Earth (supposed to be a very funny collection of short stories about love)

Malise Ruthven The Divine Supermarket: Travels in Search of the Soul of America (about religion in America, such as fundamentalists and TV preachers)

Seneca On the Shortness of Life (part of Penguin's Great Ideas series)

Lucy Wadham Heads and Straights (part of Penguins London Underground series)

I had been having a pretty good year in terms of not buying as many books, but I feel like I have fallen off the wagon (big time) in the past month or two. :(

  14. Damn! I was hoping you wouldn't come back at me with that comment!  :giggle:

OK, I won't buy you the book (it hasn't come up in the sale anyway). I guess I'll have to find a book you actually want from the millions on your wish list. ;)

Let's kiss and make up.  :flowers2:

  15. And then I'll bin the book :D You'd like that, huh? :D

It will keep me cosy warm all Christmas .. my wood burner needs feeding :D

    :cray:

You would both really trash/burn a book that your dearest, darlingest friend gave you?  :wibbly:  :wibbly:  :wibbly:

What if I wrote a really lovely message inside it?
