The Tailor of Panama by John le Carré?
-
Hi Andrea, how are you?, I know this is in no way helpful but I haven't read them but I want to, amazon is now selling an omnibus edition of the books and an omnibus edition of The Aurora Teagarden Mysteries
I have heard they are really good.
Thanks Weave - I think I might take a punt on one of these. Maybe I'll put one on my christmas list

Phew - finally finished Bywyd Blodwen Jones last night. It was a little bit challenging but very enjoyable and I've picked up lots of new vocabulary. I'm being a bit slow with my reading this year and really want to pick up the pace! Off to read some more of The Little Friend right now!

Drivers who have their headlights blazing in broad daylight! I've noticed it's quite common,as if it's some kind of new craze!
I think most newer cars are equipped with daytime running lights, so they go on automatically. I don't know why....safety?
Yea most new cars have this now, so they are on all the time - I think its a legal requirement on new cars in the UK, and its for safety reasons - no danger of forgetting to put them on at lighting up time or in poor visibility.

My goodness I have done so little reading in the last month. I am about half way through Blodwen Jones (which is only 80 pages) and just a few chapters into The Little Friend. I think I need to buck my ideas up! I think the reason is that I've started keeping my old dyddiadur (that's diary in Welsh) again and I write in it before bed, which eats into my reading time and also sometimes replaces my reading altogether.

I hate how a lot of newspapers *cough*thesun*cough* have gone from publishing horrible stories about her a few years ago, to calling her an angel and a wasted talent (which she is)....they didn't exactly help her by splashing photos of her drugged up on their front pages to sell papers....such hypocrisy.
Very good point.

Have you read any George Orwell?
Richard Adams The girl in a Swing is an interesting book, although I'm not sure it strictly meets your requirements.

Sad news that Amy Winehouse has died. Whatever her problems, and there seems to have been so many of them, she was an exceptional talent.
So sad. What an incredible waste

Oh drat
I completely forgot!

Kylie this is a lovely thread, thank you for starting it. Sorry to hear you're not feeling great. Hope you feel better soon.

See anything good happening on set at all?
No - it was all very hidden away on the top floor of one of the buildings (a different building to mine). I didn't even spot anyone famous (or even crew come to that) in the carpark where all the big winebago type trucks were.
-
Oh - Oh - exciting info: They were filming the new series on site where I work (in one of the buildings). I made sure I took my lunchtime walk in full view of the windows, just in case (million in one chance) they were pointing and rolling the cameras my way at the time

Well last night I did something I never do - which is give up on a book less than 100 pages from the end! I had been finding The Clan of the Cave Bear flagging as soon as it hit the Clan Gathering; all the described competitions were very tedious - and then just as the story starts to perk up, we see
Mog-ur telepathically linking minds with the other mog-urs and Ayla - and Ayla seeing into the future of the human race
which I just found ridiculous.
So I started Donna Tarts The Little Friend instead. I have also started Bywyd Blodwen Jones - a novel for welsh learners, a humorous diary formatted story about a welsh learner. It's really good so far - very funny, but I have been advised to read it out loud so that the hearing part of my brain learns along with the understanding part, which means I need a different book to read in bed (otherwise Alex may complain lol) which is why I started the Donna Tartt one.

Ooh sounds good. Can't believe I missed the first one!

Hi Lucy. How long have you lived in Sheffield? Do you have the Sheffield or Laandaan accent
?

Hi and welcome
Nice to meet you

Has anyone read the Lily Bard Mysteries by Charlaine Harris? I'm looking for something light and easy to read with a touch of humour.
-
Thanks LMB - I was beginning to think I probably wouldn't bother reading the rest of the series. By the sounds of it I wouldn't enjoy it much anyway.
-
I am starting to enjoy it a lot more as it goes on. How did you find the rest of the series?

The following book explores Myers Briggs personality types and is very interesting. The angle is church rather than work, but the information is probably transferable. Otherwise, I'm sure there are plenty of other books on Myer-Briggs type definitions.

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
I expect this will be unpopular opinion!
I did quite enjoy it, but I wouldn't feel I could recommend it as a 'must read' and it certainly didn't seem as good as the hype.
I agree. I was rather underwhelmed by it. I think it is, as you say, a bit hyped.

Well I didn't any Maupassant but I'm about half way through The Clan of the Cave Bear. It's quite good, though it took a while to get going. I also found some of the descriptions layered on a bit thick, especially towards the beginning, and began to get a little tired of endless detail about which berries were gathered for this purpose or that purpose. It's a pleasant enough read so far though.

The Clan of the Cave Bear is going well, I'm going to enjoy it on the beach I think
Am also slipping a book of Maupassant short stories into my case in case I fancy a change.
I need quick and simple stir-fry recipes!

This one is very light and simple, just sliced onions, garlic, pak choi, mushrooms and quorn pieces stir-fried and flovoured with light soy sauce and a pinch of fennel seeds. I made it when I was recovering from an illness and wanted something easy and not too rich. I had it with plain boiled rice. You could obviously use chicken instead of quorn.
