  1. I like your thinking.
  2. Y'all really do an excellent job with this place, and it is appreciated. Thanks. /doffing hat/
  3. In self defense, yeah? I read this a long time ago, and enjoyed it. Oh! Meant to post I've finished my first book of the year, The Accounting by William Lashner, very good, thanks muggle! Second edit....(my brain, my brain!) Have started The Secret History. Love the first 12 pages.
  4. Room and cook your own breakfast. I am sooo not a breakfast person. Every other day will be sightseeing, cruising down the Mississippi River, touring the French Quarter, or the Plantations along the river. I bet it wouldn't take quite that long.
  5. The Accounting by William Lashner This is the first book by William Lashner that I've read, and I can tell you, I'll be reading many more of this prolific author. Lashner's quick witted and fast paced style coupled with his mordant sense of humor kept me reading, at the last, till 3 in the morning. Halfway through the book, I thought.....well...this is it. Where can it go from here? Hah, it went, and proceeded with some interesting twists along the way. Three teenagers steal approximately One Million Dollars, drug money, and ostensibly get away with it. Well, sorta, kinda. The name of the book, after all, is The Accounting. But more interesting is the account of what a secret like that does to one's friendships, and ultimately one's life. Can a person live a normal life with such a terrifying secret? What will he sacrifice for that secret? Recommended. 4/5 Thanks muggle.
  6. Good article. I have Hollow City preordered from Amazon, I loved Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. I'm afraid I'll have to reread before I read the sequel though! I've seen Barracuda by Christos Tsiolkas on the shelf, but am undecided.....and tempted. There are a couple of Val McDermid that look interesting. I didn't know David Mitchell had a new book coming out! Yays! I also didn't know there was a film version of Gone Girl coming out.....more Yays! Thanks for posting the article!
  7. I have the Irish series on the shelf, and NY. Hope I get to them sometime in the next year or two.
  8. Thanks, Marie. It may take me all year, hopefully that's all. Thanks, Chrissy. I hope you will too!
  9. OK. This number may not be exactly right. I think I zoned out a couple of times and lost count, but when I did I tried to low ball. Hah. So, I count (about) 72 that I've read, at least a dozen I've started and abandoned, and a questionable, but high number that are already on the shelf, here for me to read. Humph. Agree with spouse, buy relatively (very) few books this year, and play catch up. Good thinking, husband.
  10. Thanks Devi! I hope the same for you and yours.
  11. The books are lovely. I hope your Dad is mending well, Kay. It's scary, I know.
  12. Thanks, Julie. They were the books in a course Charles took at University, so he has read most of all of them, years ago. So, I'll have lots of discussion and help. Thanks, LP! I hope yours is as well. They are challenging, to say the least, but such a basis for just about everything. I can't wait! Happy and healthy New Year to you and Alan as well.
  13. Thanks chalie! They are intimidating! To me as well. I've had them, or most of them for 6 and a half years, about time I got to it! I've only read part of the Introduction, and it is beautifully done. I think I'll have to track down his translation of The Odyssey as well, thanks for mentioning! The list of his translations, etc in this book is amazing, what a prolific fella!
  14. muggle, love Lashner's style! Reading his The Accounting.
  15. I look forward to hearing from you................
  16. Great review, Julie! Good start to the New Year. Happiness and all that Jazz.
  17. I'm very sorry to hear of BIL and Mum's problems, Kay. I hope all is mo' bettah verra soon! You are right, that's all in the Old Year. On with the New! Happy reading, happy times, to all of you and yours. Spotty slippers are adorable. I'm seeing more and more spotty things in the stores, so you are IN my dear! Gorgeous pile of books!
  18. Clang, clang, clang went the trolley!! Hey, hey! I'll wait and see how James grows on you, then, and only then, perhaps....will I dip my toe in.
  19. Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, Sari. I can understand it though. It was a bit flat in the reading, but the detailing was excellent, I thought.
  20. Just saw muggle not's post over on the old thread...regarding The Accounting – William Lashner. Sounds great muggle!! Just downloaded it to my kindle. Also, his Veritas for only 99 cents.
  21. Hey! That isn't so very bad......... Great lists! Really, amazing.
  22. I. Am. Overcome. Really. Really! Beautiful organization, Sari. Just beautiful. Beyond me, for sure. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When are you going to come and organize us? It took me three days, at least, to find The Secret History. That is just wrong.
  23. Believe me, they fly by! I know they look imposing, but when you start, they are just pussycats. Happy reading!!
  24. Well, 2013 was a good reading year, I managed to break my old record of 92, with 99 books read this (2013) year. If I hadn't had a couple of dry spells, it coulda, woulda been more, oh well. I'm happy with it anyhow!
