The film really did stay true to the book, in most ways. Naturally a lot of detail was left out, and it was much better to have already read the book beforehand. Peck was perfection as Dwight, I always like Ava Gardner, and Fred Astaire was fabulous. Just perfect for Osborne. A few names were different though. The subs name was changed, and Osborne, John in the book became Julian in the film. Oddness.

Amazon. Amazon. Amazon................/sigh/ I wish I could remember the name of a book I read, probably in the early 1980's that followed a family's ordeal during a Nuclear Winter. I've googled, with no satisfactory results.

Sounds very interesting, Ruth. Excellent review! I know very little about du Maurier, but what I've heard jives and your review has further peaked my curiosity.

The Long Long Way, my current read, WWI/trench warfare is a difficult but excellent read, I'm finally about 3/4th of the way through. I just can't read it, exclusively. So, last night I read about a quarter of I Am Livia by Phyllis T. Smith. This is Livia, wife of Caesar Augustus.......aka Livia the Poisoner. told from her point of view, fictional, of course. Well done, so far.

Excellent review, Julie. What a story it must be! I will be on the look out for it.

Great site, dtr. I checked on the CND site and it seems to have begun in 1958, the year after On the Beach was published, so it may well have been as a result of the book. Here is a link to their book page, and OtB isn't listed, but I'm sure the list isn't complete. Interestingly enough, they mention John Wyndham's The Chrysalids. Here is the link. http://www.cnduk.org/information/books-and-films/itemlist/category/73-books LOL, glad you posted this, I was about to. I haven't read it yet, but I'm surprised at the number of books he wrote! I had no idea. Yes, yes, and yes! Great free association. It does sum up nicely, Honor, Duty, and Love. Shute didn't forget the more sordid side, but I love the way he concentrated on the good side of humankind.

I copied and pasted my review (from here) over there. Just for the balance, if nothing else. I hated seeing that nastiness just sitting out there all by itself.

Our azaleas are gorgeous right now, blooming like crazy with more coming out every day. I just hope the rain doesn't ruin them. We had crummy weather today, but the rain wasn't too heavy. So, they're still looking good. I miss that good mud down there, this stuff is that nasty red clay. bleech!

Matter of fact, I agree. But it is so powerful, and he is able to evoke such emotional responses in the reader, just imagining the feelings they are experiencing. Truly a sign of a great writer, one that is able to pull that off. I wondered about the strength of Shute's anti-war/nuclear stance, but look at the time line of the Doomsday Clock I posted above. Shute wrote the story, well, it was published in 1957, so was written just prior. From 1953 to 1960 the clock was closest to Midnight......aka Destruction. Two minutes. It's never been quite that close again. Never too late, after all, it's only the 5th of the month.... I think/hope that others that voted for the book will post their thoughts during the month, some time. It's a lively discussion, so far. But there is more to be delved into, I think.

We recently watched all of the available 6 seasons. Loved it! No TV into the house, will either stream #7, or wait for the DVD so we can glom on them.

LOL Good one, emelee. Oh, I think there isn't one of us that is satisfied with our own pictures. I've certainly deleted a lot of mine. heh

Actually, I found Mrs. Dalloway to be the "easiest" of Woolf's books. But I've only read three, I think. and, not The Waves. Husband read The Waves though, and enjoyed it.

Oh, you're welcome! I'm so tickled that you loved The Sea! It's truly one of my favorites, ever. And Banville! I've read it three times, and it wasn't till the last reading I finally "got" all the levels. I read the Tey a long time ago and liked it a lot. I should reread as I don't remember details anymore.

Oh, lets just all agree that we are a bunch of good looking people.......there! That settles it!

It was funny, I searched the title on Amazon, and came up with the film first. It was reasonably priced, so I figured what the heck... I'll read the book in time for the May RC, and then watch the film. Actually, I'm waiting to see the film On the Beach till husband finishes the book...../tapping toes/ heh

I meant "we", the generic "we" of any forum, any gathering. That includes every poster on this forum, including CG and myself.. If I post something, it's pretty obvious it is what I think, and is my opinion. I don't think typing IMO is absolutely necessary to say that what I write is my opinion. She stated her opinion, and it is at variance with the usual opinions expressed here. Perhaps stated in not the most diplomatic terms, but I truly did not see anything that was insulting or mean to anyone. I have no desire to rehash, I'm just stating my opinion.

At that point in the book, my brain made a little question mark, then passed it over. heh I guess I'm just not a highly detailed person, the big picture is what's important to me. It has to be more glaring than that to make much of an impression on me. I'll tell you what did bother me though. Not in the book, well, it was in the book but the fact that the gorgeous Ava Gardner played Moira, and in the book, Moira is a slender blonde. It truly messed with my brain!

I have a Paperwhite, do I need a Fire?
pontalba replied to Anna Begins's topic in Audiobooks & eBooks
I actually like the Fire because I can go back and forth, playing Free Cell or checking email in between reading. Especially with emotionally difficult books. -
Not to mention, correct!

I hadn't read this thread, as I'm not a Potter fan. Read the last one only and saw nothing to it. Not fair, I know as the build-up is the thing. However, reading that last one didn't move me to read the others (on my shelf, btw). I think, however, that the same sort of marketing strategy that was used for the Potter books was equally successful for the (dare I mention it ) Shades of Grey trilogy. And, yes, it's clever as heck, and very effective, and, I believe, highly manipulative. But we all fall for it. Nothing wrong with that, at all. I also believe that when we post something on any of these threads it is our opinion, and don't necessarily have to state IMO at every turn. I'd assume that if someone posts something it is their opinion.

Thanks, Virginia. Wouldn't ya know, the sun just came out. Strange and changeable weather we have down here. First mail, then nap.
