  1. After, I'm not sure how many duds, I've started Holy Orders: A Quirke Novel by Benjamin Black (aka John Banville). AT LAST! Something clicked!
  2. Look out roadways!, Julie's a comin'!! Great news. You know, I've been on the fence about the Dicker book, but your review has brought me down on the side of wanting to read it, thanks, Julie!
  3. I'm not sure if I've read any of them...but I do remember Roger Moore as The Saint!
  4. Sorry, Honey, what was that?
  5. Great review, ian. I love the Bosch series.
  6. The way we are now, yes. Probably so. But someday.......someday. I do have hopes that the human race will somehow survive in a better manner than we are now.
  7. Willoyd, I loved your descriptions of the bicycling in the U.K.! Absolutely great! Julie, that's really nice. Looks a lot like our Tammany Trace... http://www.tammanytrace.org/ The closest part of it is about 13 miles from us. There are places along, called trailheads, that have different kinds of refreshments, and rentals for bikes available. I've been tempted, but husband is not enthusiastic. lol btw, what you call Counties, we call Parishes. Goes back to the French and Spanish influence of Louisiana history. They had us first.
  8. Good grief, Julie! What a bunch if idiots. Incredible. Black and blue handprints?? I'm very happy that your doctor told them off about it! Good for him! But Yays, on the being able to get used to the cane so soon. That's wonderful news!
  9. Glad it's helping. I used the sepia for quite a while, but found the black even sharper, finally.
  10. Thanks, Athena. Still mucking about. but Life is interfering. Drat. I like the sound of Salt, I love dystopian/post-apocalyptic stories. I was disappointed in Stars My Destination as well. I first read it a couple of years ago, expecting quite a lot. For me at least it didn't live up to expectations. I think if it had been read earlier in my life, before reading as much science fiction as I have, I'd have enjoyed it more. It would have been fresher to me. As it is, it's a bit dated. Kinda, sorta. It was innovative at the time of it's publication, mid 1950's.
  11. Good review, BB. Def one I want to get to, in time.
  12. Ditto. We both enjoyed it.......it "enjoyed" is the right term. I'd have liked to hear your groups opinions....lol
  13. We have kazillions of bookmarks around here, a large portion from the monthly local library sales. But whenever we travel we always manage to obtain some from the visited cities bookstores or sales. And I still find my husband placing a bit of tissue or scrap of envelope in to mark his place! NO Dog Eared pages in this house. That hurts!
  14. They were my first love. Started young, with the Nancy Drew series.
  15. Tap the middle of the page to call up the tabs at the top of the page, you'll see the Aa symbol, on that drop down you'll see the three color choices......white, sepia, and black. I have a Kindle Fire HD 7", Dolby Audio, Dual Band WiFi, 32 GB. Good Luck.
  16. Can't seem to settle on anything to read. I've picked up several with not much in the way of results. hmmmm /tapping toe/
  17. Re the Kindle Fire, we've found that if we change the background to black, with the white font it's much easier on the eyes. I'd had sepia for a long time, then husband tried the black background, and it works a treat! Just sayin'. My internet wouldn't go through this morning, then we had to go out. Still was out when we got home, but when I ran the HP fixer...whatever they call it, it fixed something and (obviously) it works now. Strangeness.
  18. That's grand news, Julie! On both counts. Congratulations!
  19. Missed seeing this before....YAYS!!!!!
  20. Last night I finished Rain Girl by Gabi Kreslehner, good German police procedural. It was a kindle first and well worth the read. Don't know what is next to leap off of the pile.
  21. Just perfect!
  22. Rain Girl by Gabi Kreslehner 4/5 A rather complex police procedural written with beautiful language and intricate settings. A young girl, at three o'clock in the morning is struck by an automobile on the autobahn near Berlin. She had appeared out of nowhere, seemingly. Who is she, and why on earth is she in such an unlikely place at that hour? The story follows the detectives that catch the case in both their investigation and private lives. They trace the unknown girl's movements, learning of her connections, to her ultimate death. Recommended. BTW, this was a kindle first, translated from the German by the same translator that translated The Hangman's series. Lee Chadeayne. Well done.
  23. Maybe by then we will be able to get to Alpha Centauri........and try not to ruin that galaxy.
  24. BB, glad you enjoyed the Weisman book! You've brought out something interesting too. The fact that he isn't preachy, and doesn't talk down to his readers. As in YOU SHOULDOR SHOULDN'T.........! He handled it nicely. Great review!
