  1. Scary, yes. Not worrying is one of the hardest things to do, or not do. But I'll tell you what my Aunt used to alwasy tell me, worry wart that I am. "Quit crossing your bridges, till you have to!!" All you can do is, as you say, do what the doctor says. And pray. The Stand is def not something to read when worried and upset. Something totally disconnected and unrealistic would be great.
  2. I'd be interested to hear how much it actually differs from the film. I've been hesitant to see the film.
  3. A greater looking bunch of people I've not seen in an age and a half! How do you post pictures? Through an imaging site? It's been so long I don't remember!
  4. Oh, pish posh! Don't give it another thought. I'm happy to be reading it, in fact, I think I only have a little over a hundred pages to go. I'm enjoying it, and don't remember a thing about it from before. /grin/ I'm beginning to wonder if I actually read the beginning of the Dark Tower series instead...... I'll echo what poppyshake said! You cannot read something you don't have the vibes for at the time. It's all vibes baby, all vibes! And that's why I have so many books going at the time...start, read awhile, drop it. ennh!
  5. It all started with Creme Brulet Cheesecake. /sigh/ At least that was the worst thing, or better, as you like. heh My excuse, er story is that it was our 4 month anniversary, and we ate out at a wonderful Chinese restaurant, sticking pretty close to Atkins. Then I made the monumental mistake of asking about desert. The minute the waitress mentioned the above unmentionable, I was lost. We've pretty much been good since, except for a few small lapses, but weight loss is at a standstill now, Tightening the restrictions and full speed ahead.
  6. Third here for Mr. Whicher. It was detailed, but not gory. Well put together I thought. She does have another one coming out later this year, but she has one out at present, from 2008, and it sounds a doozy! Queen of Whale City
  7. Right. Sounds good though, will investigate Amazon..... I loved the book, haven't seen the movie. Yet. I was a bit lax in reading the last few days, but am about 3/4ths through The Stand. Verra exciting.
  8. Yesterday was a bad day at black rock. heh Husband and I split a medium pizza when we visited across the lake, I don't even want to know how many grams of carbs were had by the both of us. However, today is a new day, and healthy eating, practically carb-less is on the menu. We are both holding steady at a 14 pound loss, and while I don't think yesterday will make us gain, we won't lose for a few more days, maybe 4. It. Was. Worth. It! lol Splurging is necessary sometimes.
  9. Hey Julie, great! Glad to hear you're starting. It flows very easily, pulling you along, just to know what happens! Chaliepud, boy, I sure hope you find that book! A new to me author was recommended elsewhere, and I investigated, and, well, the result is: Bought.... The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love by Oscar Hijuelos Beautiful Maria of My Soul " " A Simple Habana Melody by..... " " also The Barrytown Trilogy by Roddy Doyle
  10. I happened on an article that applies a bit to this topic. Introvert vs extrovert at any rate, a book coming out called Quiet: The Power of Introverts In A World That Can't Stop Talking. http://www.npr.org/2012/01/30/145930229/quiet-please-unleashing-the-power-of-introverts?ft=3&f=100876926&sc=nl&cc=bn-20120202 Interesting little quiz at the end of the article.
  11. Moving along fairly well in The Stand, about a third of the way through.
  12. I can ascribe to that theory, I've long believed it. I need the silence as well, it's the only way I can hear myself think. I'm fortunate in that my husband is a reader as well, and we don't have cable tv, or any tv coming into the house. We do have a television for watching dvds, and we enjoy that. No commercials! lol But we sit side by side reading for a good portion of time, and will occasionally read out loud to each other, interesting or funny bits. I did somewhat learn to shut out tv noise when my Aunt was living, she had to have it going all the time, would even fall asleep with it, and as she was hard of hearing, it was loud. I can see now that reading with the noise was not as productive as silence though, by a long shot.
  13. That's worth a double post! Congratulations!! Who among us has not done the same? hee hee In all, I want to lose 45 pounds. That is the ultimate goal. First goal however is 30 pounds, of which I've lost 14. We started this diet on the 2nd of January (had to finish the ice cream in the freezer ), so it's been a month now. The next 16 won't go so fast, unfortunately. By past experience, I'm figuring by May(ish), maybe early June, the rest will be off. At least I have a pile of clothes to wear at that in-between weight!
  14. The other day we watched The Terminator, and last night watched Terminator 2. Whoa!!
  15. Kylie you are my hero[ine]! Great posts over there, well written, informative, and clearly thought out. Good show! Verra
  16. Thanks Kylie, it's too late for me to go back and replicate, but knowing they do have a method makes me feel a bit better about the site. btw, while I'm thinking of it, I listed a book bought recently in the other thread...The Price of Salt. Well, guess what it says on the cover? "Now a masterwork, the novel that inspired Nabokov's Lolita". !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We'll see about that!
  17. I must be doing something wrong then, when I tried, it refused, didn't even give me a "add this book" button to click. I thought it was strange, but figured it was their quirk.
  18. The three books above by Sarah Woodbury sounded better in synopsis than they were. Time travelling romance, Prince of Wales, I mean the Welsh one, not what the title stands for nowadays, it all sounded great. And, to a point it was. Too pat, not enough meat on the plate I have to say for my taste. I read them in between Cryptonomicon, and perhaps that is the reason they didn't sit well for me. A woman inexplicably lands in 13th century Wales, from Pennsylvania no less, happens to run into Prince Llywelyn. So as not to give away all the plots, let me just say that it flows from there, with said unexplained/able time travel back and forth to follow. It was partially satisfying, and for a quick filler it was fine. 3 stars The proper order is as follows. Footsteps in Time Prince of Time Daughter of time
  19. Three more to add to the TBR pile: The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith Plotting Writing Suspense Fiction by Patricia Highsmith All Hell Let Loose by Max Hastings [boots on the ground/everyman stories of WWII] Julie, I've started The Stand, only 65 pages in, but will definitely read it through.
  20. I've got 6 or 7 going at present. Of course, I only actively pursue 2 or 3 at the time, falling back on the others not as often. Some fiction, some non-fiction.
  21. Five of my books have the Rescue Me tab, and good grief, I can't even find them around here. They are buried somewhere, so I just let it go. Thankfully we have accounts on Library Thing, and so far no problems with them. They have discussion threads too, although I don't usually check them anymore. One thing that has always annoyed me about Good Reads is that they don't allow any duplications, even when it is a different ISBN, version, cover that we've gotten. That is just high handed IMO, and short sighted. Between husband and myself, we have several hundred duplicates, and I'd like to see them on GR. However in their "wisdom"it isn't allowed. grrrrr. Library Thing will notify you if and when you post a duplicate, but they don't give a fig what you do, it's your bookshelf. Another plus, on LT anyone can add a cover picture, and they have loads to choose from, and it's an easy process. Plus, when I transfered bookshelves from LT to GR, almost a thousand didn't go over. Some were duplicates, but the others are a mystery to me. No idea why they didn't transfer. No, for my money, LT is far superior for keeping track of what books you possess.
  22. Loved it, have seen it a couple of times. Me too, they crack me up!
  23. Oh, man! The hormonal shifts were horrible, that's one good thing about "mature ages", all that is in the distant past! Yays for everyone! /happy dance/ I made Beef Stroganoff yesterday according to the Atkins recipe, and it was delish! Love sour cream. I've lost 13 pounds so far, it's going slower now, but I expected that. The treadmill was delivered yesterday, and I'm about to go on it now in it's initiation cruise. Grabbing my kindle..... Clothes are a little looser, only 30-35 pounds to go. heh.
  24. You could try Charles McCarry's books, a series featuring a spy, Paul Christopher. A thinking man's spy. Have you read John LeCarre's books? Great series.
  25. Adolph Hitler by John Toland Hitler, Legend, Myth and Reality by Werner Maser The Arms of Krupp by William Manchester Five Germanys I Have Known by Fritz Stern Hitler's Willing Executioners by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen Then there is Richard J. Evans trilogy, probably some of the most inclusive: The Third Reich in Power The Coming of the Third Reich The Third Reich at War And: The End by Ian Kershaw Hope that helps.
