  1. No, I didn't review it, I got too busy and then lost my mojo reading Athena and Steve's reviews- they write such better review than I do!  I'm also afraid of giving things away in my reviews.

Oddly enough, I've been to Trinidad, several times- we vacation there and it is exactly described- actually, the grocery store Carly goes in, is one of the coolest grocery stores I've been to (it's called Murphy's).  Not even many people in California know about it, it is right on the coast and is like, population 300.  I've driven nearly the entire CA coast, so we found it!

Then I found out Catherine Ryan Hyde is from Cambria, a TINY costal town in the south, I've been there too!

Re: the book- I loved the pace and I liked how the story was told between the past and the present, through the different states they travel through.  I also thought Carly's question of "Why not me?" was an excellent sidebar.  The end left me a little disappointed- "That's IT???"

If you liked it, I highly, highly recommend When I Met You by Hyde.  Did you know she wrote Pay it Forward?

I am currently reading "When I Found You" by Catherine Ryan Hyde.

I have driven the coast route several times. It is IMHO the most beautiful drive in the U.S.  I had a 3 month assignment in San Luis Obispo years ago and have visited Calif. many times. We raced at Laguna Seca one time. :)

I was not disappointed with the ending of Walk Me Home. I thought it fit in well with the book.

  2. I pulled out all the radishes from the garden and threw most away and kept maybe 2 dozen. Picked a bunch of spinach and will have salads the next several days.

Oh yeah, was trimming the shrubbery with an electric hedge trimmer and somehow got my leg right above the knee.

Also, over the weekend I found a "tick" in a sensitive place on me. Pulled it out with the tweezers but it came apart while doing so. Poured peroxide on it. Today I have a little swelling about the size of a bean.

  3. '2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony'

The ceremony, welcoming Nirvana, Peter Gabriel, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens, Kiss, Hall and Oates, the E Street Band, Andrew Loog Oldham and Brian Epstein, is worth watching for the speeches as much as the music.

Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks, Carrie Underwood, and Sheryl Crow paid tribute to Linda Ronstadt by singing , together, some of Linda's big hits. They did an excellent job. One of my Linda Ronstadt favorites was Blue Bayou.

  4. I hope your friend's operation sorts it all out for her.

My parent's celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary (Diamond) this week. Me and my two sisters bought them (and ourselves) lunch at a hotel they love to visit. It was a lunch of laughter and lots of longevity jokes (including my Dad's favourite that he would have served less time for murder! :giggle2: ).

Today 25 of us (daughters, partners grandchildren and cousins) are gathering for a posh tea. I can't remember the last time I had to find two dressy outfits to wear in the same week. And today as I'm not driving I will actually be wearing (low) heels! :o

    Should be fun.

Congratulations on your parents Anniversary. Quite an accomplishment.

That must have been some tea with 25 attending, sounds like it would be lots of fun to all get together.

  5. I'm from Wake County, NC. Margaret Maron has a lenghtly set of books with Deborah Knott as her protagonist. The books are set in fictional "Colleton County", which is really next door to me, Johnston County. Ms. Maron chose Colleton County as the name because John Colleton was the only Lord Proprietor of NC not to have a county named after him in NC. Knott's father is a wealthy former bootlegger, whose real name you would instantly recognize if you were from this area. Ms Maron has take some liberties with geography when her books required it, but most of the area is still very recognizable.

And then, of course, there is Charles Frazier although not from Wake County but still from NC. I live in Guilford County, NC (Greensboro).

Pontalba, surely you aren't going to ignore James Lee Burke from your part of deep south. :)

  6. Congrats, emelee!

muggle!   Keep us up on GDs progress. :)

Yuck, lower back went out again Monday evening.  I will learn to wear the back brace when moving stuff around.

Some better, with an adjustment from chiropractor, and ice, lots of ice on it.  Have to baby it for a while.  grrrrr!

Hope the back improves soon.  Bad backs are really troublesome.

Gentle hugs Pont, hope it's way better soon ....I so feel your pain :(

You probably feel the pain in the pelvis. :)

  7. I have read all 18 of Tony Hillerman's Navajo Mystery novels and about 8 of the other novels. Hillerman was one of the authors that I really enjoyed reading.

Vankshing Act sounds interesting, I will look it up.

On another note, a Western that I really enjoyed was Appoloosa  by Robert B. Parker. Strongly recommend it.

  8. You should be very proud, Muggle!  She has been nothing but an high achiever, all along.  Well done!  :clapping:

Alaska sounds fun, but also very scary.

LOL, I was worried about bears and lo and behold there is a large forest fire. GD says not to worry as she is fine and they know how to evacuate in the Kenai Peninsula. Says the fire is about 10 miles away from her.

  9. We went to see the “Jersey Boys” back in April. It was a great show and the story of “Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons” was very interesting  with lots of surprises. Jersey Boys won the Grammy Award and the Tony Award for best Musical.

I read today where the movie version of Jersey Boys, directed by Clint Eastwood, is being released in June.  I am anxious to also see the movie.

The song Oh, What a Night still remains the longest "charted" song by an artist. It was charted for 54 weeks.

  10. What an amazing experience for your granddaughter Muggles! I wonder who she inherited her interest in bears from????? :giggle2: The only advice I've heard is 'DO NOT FEED THE BEARS!' Of course, you'd never do that!! :D

Like Chrissy says, I'm sure there's lots of people here who would love to hear what she's getting up to.

You'll be so proud of how well she did at university. What did she major in?

GD's major was in Environmental studies. She had two minors.

    1. Environmental biology.

    2. Anthropology

You should be very proud, Muggle!  She has been nothing but an high achiever, all along.  Well done!  :clapping:

Alaska sounds fun, but also very scary.

Thanks. She is very adventurous and intelligent (unlike me :)). She wrote a poem which I thought was brilliant for her age when she was 13 years old which I posted on this forum and on BAR about 8 years ago. You may or may not remember it. Between her junior and senior year of high school (she was 17 yrs old) she attended Oxford University for 2 / 3 months during the summer and got 2 A's and an A+ in her 3 subjects.

  11. I could certainly make a noise Muggle Not, but I'm not so sure of the 'stand your ground'. Despite loving bears, I think I would go for the faint on the spot option if one got too close. :blush2:

Kayaking on her first day? How wonderful. Let GD know that there are many strangers on a forum who cannot wait to hear how she gets on!

Black bears are not too aggressive but brown bear can be very aggressive and she will have to be very careful. GD spent a semester studying at the University facility in ACCRA, Africa. While there she arranged for guides to take her and 4 college friends on a small safari into the wilds of Africa. She seen many elephant and on one occasion two elephants came toward her and she was told by the guide to stay put and not run. She said that it was very difficult to stand still in the one spot. :)

  12. Many congratulations to your GD, Muggle Not. What a wonderful internship she is undertaking in what truly must still be an unspoilt region.

I would love to hear more about 'Bear Safety'. Aside from "Don't touch a bear's salmon stash!" I can only think of 'Running like the wind if you see one (once photos have been taken)'. :giggle2:

I did a little research on the Kenai peninsula regarding bears. :) See below:

Breakup signals the return of summer to Alaska, as well as bears awakening from hibernation. Officials recommend Kenai Peninsula residents remain cautious of bears when outdoors. Brown bears are present in the surrounding wilderness and dwell close to Kenai and Soldotna.

Brown and black bears inhabit Kenai refuge and central Peninsula. Black bears are common in all forest habitats on the refuge. They also occur above tree line in the Kenai Mountains. Densities average around one bear per 1.6 square miles, according to the refuge.

Warning signs were put up along a few trails after bears charged hikers, but there were no attacks.

If people do find themselves confronting a bear, making noise and standing your ground are the best options. If the bear is at a distance, this is especially helpful. It is probably being inquisitive, Miller said.

On another note, my GD has been invited to go kayaking on the river Friday, her first day at work. :)

  13. My youngest granddaughter graduated today from NYU (New York University). She was an Honor student. Tomorrow she flies from N.Y. to Alaska for a 3 month internship job. There was one opening for the internship and she was selected from all the applicants. The location is in the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska, a remote area of 16,000 sq. miles with much wildlife. She will take a quick study in "bear" safety as there are many wild brown bear (which can be dangerous) in the Peninsula. Seventy % of her work will be in the field where she will be in charge of specific projects. There are two rivers, the Kenai and the Russian, and both are well known for their salmon which is probably the best in the world.  Her airline tickets are paid for, they will furnish her a car, and she will live with a host family. :)

And I am the happy grandfather. :)

  14. Do you mean ABC and NBC?

My friend has all the bells and whistles on his satellite service.  He pays well over $150/month.  o_O

I have found that the price you pay can be negotiated. I have a "bundle"........TV, Internet, and Telephone all in one package and it costs me about $122 per month. It includes:

Approx. 137 TV Channels including HBO

Unlimited local and long distance telephone

    Extreme (high speed) Internet
