  1. Wow!! Those photos are awesome. What enjoyment it must have been to view those sights in person.
  2. Lonesome Dove is an epic and an excellent book that for the most part portrays the old west in the days of cattle drives, cowboys, and Indians. The first 25% of the book basically develops the characters, and an interesting group they were. Some people expect a bang - bang type of book and don't understand the story of the west in its early days. Have you watched the Lonesome Dove mini TV series.....it was one of the best. We probably enjoyed living there more than any place we lived. We had the house built according to our plans and I designed the layout of the porch, etc. I really, really, miss living there.
  3. Touch of Grey - Grateful Dead
  4. I have The Girl On The Train on hold at the library. The book is currently #1 in sales in the U.S. Looking forward to reading it.
  5. No, the heat from the fireplace didn't reach to the books. Of course though we didn't burn the fireplace 24 hours a day. We did enjoy the room but the best part was it opened onto a screened porch that I cannot even tell you how much we enjoyed. We used to sit on the porch every day. During the day I would frequently read a book on it and in the evening there was a bird (wood thrush) that would sing such a nice sound. Sitting on the porch was also when we would see the bears down in the yard/woods. :)Oh, how I miss living there.
  6. Happy Easter. Hopefully, the barking stops soon if not immediately.
  7. Shades Of Grey - The Monkees
  8. Battle Of New Orleans - Johnny Horton
  9. This was our bookcase in the family room of our house when we lived near Charlottesville, Virginia. The Louis L'Amour collection are the 'brown" books on the lower shelves on each side of fireplace. We also had bookcases upstairs in the bonus room.
  10. I just ordered a half Lemon Cake for Easter. Take a look especially at the chocolate cakes and fruity cakes. So many great cakes. I am off my diet for one day. http://maxieb.com/fruity-cakes
  11. I still have the Louis L'Amour collection although all packed up in boxes. Which book of his were you thinking of reading? A Western that I really recommend, other than my favorite Lonesome Dove, is Appaloosa by Robert B. Parker. http://www.amazon.com/Appaloosa-Virgil-Cole-Everett-Hitch-ebook/dp/B000P2A3Y6/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1428079243&sr=1-1&keywords=appoloosa
  12. I have read 7 books by CRH and Don't let Me Go is the one book that I would read if not reading any others by her. Of course though, after reading it I would want to read more by her. The characters are interesting and are a story in them self. Also, there are life stories that we can all learn from in this book. Anna, are you saying that my mind is fuzzy.
  13. I find that I must disagree with you. If we were polite we wouldn't be conversing with each other on her thread.
  14. Walking To New Orleans - Fats Domino
  15. LOL, I can't wait to give you my reason but since this is Anna's thread I will wait until she gives you her reason first.
  16. I started reading the Zane Grey book Desert Gold last night and about 20 pages into it realized that I had already read the book so I am returning it to the library. I may download the CRH book that Anna has recently read and reviewed favorably.
  17. I will also put the book on my TBR list. In fact it may be soon. I was just curious on the loan to a person in a different Country. I had loaned a book to my wife but didn't know if loans could be made internationally. Thanks.
  18. I finished reading One, Two, Buckle My Shoe by Agatha Christie and give it a 8/10. Enjoyable read and as usual was surprised at the ending. I am now without a book to read. I have 6 kindle books on hold yet at the library. Hmmm, I may get one of my hardback's of Tortilla Flats or Cannery Row or Sweet Thursday and re-read it. I have already read them twice but a third time will be just as enjoyable Edit: I have downloaded from the library Desert Gold by Zane Grey.
  19. I am curious. Were you able to loan one of your kindle books to Nollaig?
  20. Sounds pretty good. What to drink?
  21. I lived in a very small town when I was a kid growing up. There were a couple families that homemade coconut crème candy eggs and also my favorite....fruit and nut and sold them. They were soooo good. My grandparents used to make the prettiest colored Easter eggs. Nowadays I have to watch my sugar intake so I forego most sweets. However, we have ham, potato salad, home made baked beans, pickled eggs, and asparagus for Easter dinner along with a couple bottles of nice wine....a Riesling for my OH and a Pinot Noir for me.. Edit : my OH scratched baked corn and replaced it with asparagus.
  22. I planted my second crop of spinach, radishes, and spring onions yesterday. The first crop is up about a 1/2 inch and doing well. The lettuce is keeping up with the spinach so maybe I can attempt to mix them in salads this year. I love spinach salads and have one almost every night with dinner doing the spring and early summer. Today I will mow the grass for the 3rd time this spring. It usually takes me about 2 1/2 hours most of which is riding the tractor. The lawn is really looking pretty good this year. The grass is thick and almost "no" weeds. My GD, the one that worked in Alaska for 3 months is flying out today for Belize where she will work for 2 months on Manatee Rehabilitation. She is excited. http://www.wildtracksbelize.org/rehab/manatee/background/
  23. (a hint it was) Walking In The Sunshine - Roger Miller
  24. A Doctor was addressing a large audience of senior citizens in Tampa. 'The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. However, there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have eaten, or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?' After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, ‘Wedding Cake.'
