  1. Just finished listening to the audiobook and wondered if anyone else had read it?

It's basically the story of Mr Golightly who is trying to write a book and decides to stay in a cottage in a little village in order to get some peace and quiet....but in doing so he learns quite a lot about the other villagers and has an influence on each and every one of them.

He also has a sad incident to deal with from his past.

As the story unfolds slowly, we begin to realise that Mr Golightly is not who we think he is.

Even though I didn't really like the narrator (Derek Jacobi) very much, I tried not to let it spoil my enjoyment and would recommend this book.

  2. Looking for something light to read at the moment, as I lay paralysed in bed with a desperate sciatica.

    Any suggestions?

Pleeeeeeaaaaazzzzz. I need something good and fun to cheer me up.:D

:D:cry: Oh, poor you, I hope you're feeling better soon.

Have you read Round Ireland With A Fridge by Tony Hawks? It's very light and funny.

  3. Well, 2 weeks from today I will be lying on my sunbed (hopefully!) in Morocco listening to a book on my ipod :tong:

I'll be listening to either Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy or Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

I'll probably listen to both of them while I'm there.

  4. Hi and welcome to the forum

Even though I was born, brought up and still live a few miles from Pendle Hill, I've never read any of the books about the Pendle witches :)

For some reason, it's just never interested me......sooooooo tell me why you enjoyed the book 'Mist Over Pendle' so much? What's the fascination?

Maybe I should think about reading them some day :)

  5. I've just finished reading Princess Orchid by Anchee Min. Has anyone else read it? I found it absolutely fascinating. Not only was it an interesting story but it was an amazing insight into the peoples lives inside the Forbidden City in China in the middle of the 19th Century.

I had no idea of Chinese history so it was a real eye-opener B)

I enjoyed the writer's attention to detail in everything from the wonderful clothes they wore to the poverty of the peasants.

It's also given me a real interest in learning more about Chinese history and how Great Britain shaped their history.

Definitely one of my favourites books of this year. :)

  6. Is anyone into audiobooks at all? The reason I ask is that on a car ride up north my buddy was listening to 1984 on his Ipod. I decided it would be fun to read again and figured I could play it on my Ipod when I was laying down to go to sleep. What I found is that I fall asleep right away when I put it on but I certainly don't stop enjoying it. I end up having crazy dreams about the thought police and whatnot. My girlfriend has also told me that in the middle of the night Ive been known to say crazy things in my sleep. Its kind of like a choose your own adventure book.:D The book gets me started then I fall asleep and go from there. Just wondering if I was crazy of if anyone else had tried this with any of their favorite books. If not I recommend it.

I listen to audiobooks all the time, but only when I'm walking or travelling by public transport or doing boring jobs in the house like ironing, washing up etc. I have listened to them in bed occasionlly but I always fall asleep and then I have to go back and find my place again, which is so frustrating :motz:so I don't tend to do that too much. I can't remember if I've had any weird dreams afterwards though :weeping:

  7. I used to listen to Oneword and thought it was brilliant - must get back into it again as I've got out of the habit - it's lovely having a story read to you.

I love Oneword.........I record one chapter of a book every day till it's ended then I listen to it all at my leisure.

I've discovered authors I've never heard of and if I've enjoyed it I'll look out for more of their books. It's a great way to try some new genres which I probably wouldn't try normally.

  8. If you enjoy reading or listening to childrens books (which I do, I've never grown up ) I would recommend The Secret Garden.

    Synopsis

After the death of her parents, Mary is brought back from India as a forlorn and unwanted child, to live in her uncle's great lonely house on the moors. Then one day she discovers the key to a secret garden and, like magic, her life begins to brighten in so many ways.

Its a wonderfully happy story of how a little girl's life changes due to tragic circumstances and of how her love of life and the secret garden she discovers also gradually transforms her little cousin's life. It's also about the power of positive thinking.

  9. I've listened to the first in the Stephanie Plum series 'One For The Money' which I loved. I think I gave it 9/10. Very funny :exc:

I immediately got hold of the next 2 in the series from the library, downloaded them to my laptop and they are ready and waiting on my slowly growing 'to be listened to' list

  10. I have only read one of his - it was the one where he goes round Britain.

    Thought that was very funny.

Do you mean Notes from a Small Island? If so, yes it's very funny in parts. What tickled me was the way he talked about how enthusiastic we are when offered a cup of tea :). And it's so true......or is that just me :D

  11. Gone for Good (Audiobook) by Harlan Coben

    Read by Tim Machin

    Amazon ISBN Number 0752849123

    Synopsis

Will Klein lost the love of his life and his brother in the same moment.....

On October 17, eleven years ago, Julie Miller was found brutally strangled in the basement of her house in the township of Livingston, New Jersey. On that day, Will's brother, Ken Klein, became the subject of an international manhunt accused of the crime. He has not been seen since. Will has tried to get on with his life in the intervening years. He has a beautiful new girlfriend, Sheila, and a job working with the homeless. My Review of this Audiobook

This is the 2nd Harlan Coben book (the 1st was One False Move) that I've listened to and this one is also wonderfully read by Tim Machin who brings the characters so much to life.

I was completely enthralled from start to finish. I loved the many twists and turns and surprises that I never saw coming! I cared about the main characters and it has you wondering whether the bad guys are really bad and if the good guys really are good.

If you enjoy crime thrillers with a rollercoaster of a read then I definitely recommend Gone for Good.

There is some graphic violence about halfway through.

I'm looking forward to reading (or listening to) more of Harlan Coben's books.

    9/10

  12. I've just finished listening to Perfume by Patrick Suskind. It's one of those books that has stayed with me for a few days, I keep going over the ending, the incredible life of the main character and the wonderful narration by Sean Barratt whose dark and rich tones were perfect for this engrossing, brutal and very unnusual story.

    Not for the squeamish :)

After that, I need some light reading so I've just started The Beachcomber by Josephine Cox.

  13. I started trying to listen to Northern Lights by Philip Pullman yesterday. I had high expectations as it said on the front it was read by Pullman himself. What it didn't advertise was that each character had a narrator of it's own for dialogue. I only got as far as hearing Lyra and Pantalaimon and realised there was no way I could sit through 11 hours of it....

    I'm really disappointed! ;)

Oh that is a shame........I hope that won't put you off listening to other books though. Nearly all the audio books I've had have only the one narrator.
