"When Richard died in 1979, when the funeral was over and the children had gone back to their own homes, she thought about calling Robert Kincaid. He would be sixty-six; she was fifty-nine. There was still time even with the loss of fourteen years. She thought hard about it for a week and finally took the number off his letterhead and dialed it.

"McGregor Insurance." Francesca sank but recovered enough to ask the secretary if she'd dialed the correct number. She had. Francesca hung up.
Next she tried the Information operator in Bellingham Washington. Nothing listed.
She tried Seattle. Nothing.
Then the Chamber of Commerce offices in Bellingham and Seattle. She asked them to check the city directories. They did, and he was not listed. He could be anywhere, she thought.
She remembered the magazine [National Geographic], he said to call there.

She asked about Robert Kincaid.
Of course the editor remember him. "Trying to locate him, huh? He left the magazine in 1975. The address and phone number I have are..."
He read off the same information Francesca already had. She stopped trying after that, mostly because she was afraid of what she might discover."
So she did try, but sort of ran out of options, I guess.
She was notified of his death in 1982.
Sorry for the huge spoiler but it's relevant to those above!

She did try to make contact with him after her husband died (in the book) but to no avail.

How come I'm on page 2 again?? I seriously need to start some major controversy here, just to keep it up...
Yours gets more traffic than mine, which is nearly always on page 2 - I think I must read pretty unimaginative books!

The Man Who Was Thursday ~ Gilbert Keith Chesterton
I want to read this. Gilbert Keith doesn't sound as mysterious as G K!

Yes, I think the word predictable sums it up nicely. I did do a review of it as I believe other people on here may have read it - certainly a few have mentioned it.
It was okay, but not really 'my thing'. I read it because the film is my bestest-friend-ever's favourite film - although I've not watched it myself.
It was a quick read and I don't regret reading it, but it hasn't made me want to read any more of his books.

Finished The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller - not sure what to read next!
-
Ernie - The film rights to TTTW were bought by Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston and it's due out this year, I believe.

Finished Wycliffe and the Redhead by W J Burley. These are not taxing in any way but I do enjoy them - 7/10.
I'm now reading The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller.

Like Kell, I use it all the time. It's a great resource.
I think I'll add it to the pinned thread.

I'm another in the 'loved it' camp for The Time Traveler's Wife.
I also really enjoyed The Curious Incident Of The Dog In Night-Time.
-
So you said on the previous page.
Are you still planning to try more of his books?

The link Michelle posted says...
The guide below will give you an indication of what a portion size should be, what counts and what doesn’t. -

Nah, my fault, I totally misread what you'd typed.
I think I'm due for a sight test again - I misread someone's status on Facebook earlier and was mightily confused. Sorry Ben.
-
It's not the cover - it's the paper quality and especially the print size which is not good for an old croc like me!
-
Edit, Michelle found a good guide which you can find, - Here.
Do you mean me? If not, thanks anyway as it answers my question too.
I'm certain Kell sent me something similar a few years ago but I lost all my bookmarks.
As a non-reader, which of the 'starter' books would you recommend I try first?
-
2. If a book has been made into a film or tv show, I NEVER buy the covers with any images or actors from the movie - I always prefer non tie-in covers.
I don't like to, but if I get the chance of one at 20p (like I did on Friday) instead of the current price of

Is that list in reading order (as in the order they should be read in)?
I tried a Pratchett - Hogfather - a couple of years ago but just couldn't get into it, despite the fact that I LOVED THE CHARACTER OF DEATH!
Good luck with the challenge.

I haven't read it (so I can't help from that point of view) but I do really like the sound of it. I have the hardback version on my Amazon Wishlist, but was waiting for the paperback as I don't actually like hardback books!
The End of Mr Y had similar pages to those you describe but they didn't cause any problems with the colour coming off.

I have a notebook. I'm addicted to notebooks, so it makes sense. And that way I always have it with me, if I happen to stop by at a bookstore.
I do that too!
I have an Amazon wishlist as well which could do with a tidy - it's got 164 things on it at the moment but I really could do with tidying it as I've probably bought some things from it - I haven't looked at it for a while!
