This thread is getting quite long so I've started a new one for you all. See you there!
-
Wow you all watch a lot of films! So many that the last thread was very, very long, so here is a new one I watched This Means War for about the fifth time yesterday. Light hearted comedy about two friends competing for the heart of the same woman. Very very funny and it has the delectable Tom Hardy in it.

He's an absolute beauty! Happy Birthday Reuben

This year I'm going to try, try, try to lose some weight. I'm not going to count calories, or restrict myself, I'm just going to be sensible about what I eat and exercise more. Fingers crossed

Your favourite Austen characters?
Lilywhite replied to chesilbeach's topic in 2008 Jane Austen Book Group
Mr Bennet has always been a favourite of mine. He's just so funny. Each time I read Pride and Prejudice, he makes me smile a little more. -
Lone Wolf Jodi Picoult When Luke Warren is involved in a car accident which leaves him in a coma, his family are gathered together against the odds; they face an impossible dilemma. His daughter Cara is praying for a miracle: she will fight everything and everyone to save her father's life. His son Edward can't imagine that a man who once ran with wolves could ever be happy with a different life. But Edward hasn't spoken to Luke for six years. How can he dare to speak on his father's behalf? Somehow, they must choose: Do they keep Luke alive? Or do they let him go? Started: 04/01/13 Finished: 19/01/13 Rated: 3/5 Comments: This wasn't my favourite Picoult book and at times I found it a bit of a struggle to continue reading, however, towards the end, the pace picked up and overall, I'm glad I persevered. This books asks those age old questions about life and death and how we cope. We are also given a new perspective from that of a wolf pack, thanks to Luke, one of he main characters. Throughout the book, Luke is in a coma. We follow his story through a series of flashbacks where we learn of his experiences out in the wild, living with the wolves and his struggle to reintegrate himself back into his family. His time with the wolves and the journey he takes to integrate himself with the pack are crazy but touching at the same time. Luke (and in turn, the reader) is taught a great many lessons from these wild animals and their way of life. This aspect of the book, sometimes felt at odds to the ongoing story, but overall was a fantastic way of giving the man in the coma his own voice. The remainder of the book is written from the conflicting views of his two children, his ex wife and her new husband, and a court appointed guardian. Edward doesn't want to see his father suffer any longer and wants to exercise his fathers wish to be an organ donor. Cara wants her father to be given the chance to pull through and perhaps recover from his injuries. Georgia is pulled back into the life she left a long time ago and is stuck between her two warring children. I suppose my own personal preferences are quite obvious as, whilst I sympathised with Cara, I thought Edward was in the right. However, I do appreciate that depending on the reader, this will change. Picoult has written the book in such a way that both sides of the story are given equal viewing and she never leans one way or another. This gives the reader the chance to make up their own mind. Picoult is a master at making us ask ourselves those difficult questions. Which way would you turn? How would you react in this situation? And at the same time, she writes beautifully poignant stories that tie you to the characters and ensure you stay with them every step of the way.

You are very brave Janet, to have a total amount spent on books aspect to your lists. I would cry if I totted up everything I spent on books in a year!! I have to admit that Lord of the Flies is one of my absolute book hates. I'm pretty sure it stems mostly from reading it in high school but I certainly won't be returning to it any time soon to see if I have changed my mind. (Also, the film version makes me shudder just thinking about it!) I do love it though, when people read it and rave about it! I'm always surprised when people get different things from the same book. Happy reading!!

I've only read the first book in his series so far but I really enjoyed it. It's been likened to Harry Potter for grown ups but I think it's better than that That's exactly why I picked it up Noll. I wasn't keen on the abuse aspect but I was interested in the butterfly effect. It's definitely worth a read though. This actually made me LOL! Although thinking about it, I'm more likely to be the madwoman, rather than finding one up there

Monster Love Carol Topolski No one in the neighbourhood has seen the Gutteridges' little girl Samantha for months. But Brendan and Sherilyn look happier than ever, so nothing is wrong. Is it? For the Gutteridges, Samantha was just a thing that threatened to worm its way into their perfect love. For everyone else, her story is the stuff of tabloid headlines. But this time it's not in a newspaper, it's happening right next door . . . Started: 01/01/13 Finished: 01/01/13 Rated: 3/5 Comments: I've only rated this average as I didn't like the subject matter. This probably sounds silly and you may well ask "why did you read it then?" but it really is quite a well written book. The story is about a 4 year old girl who is abused and murdered by her parents. You are given brief glimpses of what she suffered at their hands, and this is more than enough for you to get the idea. However, the interesting thing is, the story is told in brief statements and recollections of everyone involved, from the neighbours who first alerted the police, to the parents of both of the perpetrators. However, the only person who doesn't get a say is the little girl herself. I read on through today, hoping to find some reasoning behind the crime, some sort of explanation to help ease my mind, but I got to the end of the book and there was none. I suppose this is more true to life than I was expecting as we rarely find any explanation for these crimes. Despite the difficult basis of the story, I would still recommend this as a very well constructed idea which the author pulls off very well.

Happy New Year to you all! Hope you've had a fabulous New Year and welcomed it in in style. Not being a big one for going out, I stayed in with friends and we chatted, laughed and sang our way into 2013 (with the help of some wine!). Biggest decision for me today... New Year, New Book. Where do I start? I will have to take my time and consider all options thoroughly before I make my final choice. So, what are your plans for the New Year?

Happy Reading 2013 Brian. Some great choices on your TBR pile.
-
Happy Reading 2013 Frankie That is some organising you've done. I love it, although I'm quite glad my TBR pile is significantly smaller. Reading your lists is almost a book in itself

HI KM! Happy Reading for 2013 I also find that I have had to curb my book buying habits. A couple of years ago some members introduced the "Read 3 Buy 1" rule and since then I've tried to stick to it. I always count off my read books in three's and although I no longer keep a count of credits that I have earned, I still monitor what I'm buying, against how many I have read. This does completely fall down though with gifts and borrowed books

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is my all time, absolute, favourite book. I also love Stephen King's The Shining, in fact, most of Stephen King's work I would read over and over again. You are going to have an awesome year of reading, I think
-
Ooooh some good books on that TBR pile! I will enjoy popping back in here and seeing how you are getting on. Happy reading 2013!
-
I love that! Treebooks! What a lovely way to separate the two formats Your TBR pile certainly is a mountain there Karsa. Some heavy duty reading to be done. Happy reading 2013!

Yesterday was my big 3-0 and I had a fantastic day. I went to the cinema to see The Hobbit, which I thoroughly enjoyed and went for a lovely meal at my favourite restaurant. What I didn't know was our meal for two, was actually a surprise gathering of my friends and family as well which made my night. I have been spoilt rotten by everyone and I'm now thinking that this being 30 thing, isn't that bad at all.

Good Luck with your 2013 reading Ben! Looking at those lists, you're going to need it Some fab books on there and several of my own personal favourites. I always love seeing classics on peoples reading lists too.
-
Some awesome books on there Noll! I look forward to seeing what you think of them. Have you tried reading anything by Jonathan Stroud? I love these books
-
If I could steal anyone's TBR pile, it would be yours! You have some fantastic books on there, I'm exited for you Happy reading 2013
-
My OCD side loves how organised your thread is And it's nice to see people with bigger lists than me. Happy Reading 2013!

Thanks Guys! Can't wait to get started The books in the attic aren't completely un-accessible, I just haven't rebuilt my bookshelves since we moved so it's easier to keep them in their boxes until I have somewhere safe to keep them. And never fear, I always have back up books
