  1. 29 is a good age, bu I have to admit, I rather enjoyed twenty-ten too!

  2. Happy birthday!

  3. Which ones have you tried, Colin? It could just be that you've not found the right one yet...
  4. I was lucky and came to them early on, then followed as the newer ones were added, so I've read all of them.
  5. Hope you enjoy The Graveyard Book as much as I did - I love Gaiman's writing.
  6. I'm the same - if I'd started with the 1st 2 books in the series, I never would have read the rest if them and that would have been a shame. I think Pratchett's style develops by leaps and bounds afer those two - the first inkling we get of his later, more polished style, comes out in Equal Rites and develops from there...
  7. Very true - I forgot about that one, but those stories were previously published online (I read and enjoyed them too!). I'll certainly be getting hold of it, especially as the profits will be going to charity, but I'm not so anxious to get it as I've already read it, whereas the others are completely new...

    Happy birthday!

  9. Definitely - especially as there have been 9 (so far) in the WotOW series and one each from the start of two new series - I can't get enough of them! She has 3 books out this year (one for each series) and I will DEFINITELY be getting all three!
  10. Or perhaps the Reading Circle team could each choose a book they think would make for really interesting discussion and that could be part of the reading circle for next year? How would folks feel about that?
  11. See, I rather like the lovely blue Worsworth editions - I have rather a lot of those on my TBR mountain (in fact, almost all the classic books on my pile are the Wordsworth editions - LOL!). They have lovely pictures on the front covers and the blue spines look nice all put together on the shelf.
  12. Well, for anyone who's coming to them new, the order of the various series are shown in the "other titles by this author to try" bit at the end of the review. I came to Bitten (the first WotOW book) shortly after it was published back in 2001, and have kept up with them ever since because I love them so much! SOme are better than others, right enough, but that's the case with any series, and there's not been a bad book yet - I think the lowest I've ever rated any of them was 7/10 and even that's pretty good because it's very rare anything gets a 10 - most of them have been 8 or 9!
  13. Nope - it was me - LOL! Also see the article on the blog HERE.
  14. Yes, I posted it in the Terry Pratchett thread a while back, as well as including it in my Pratchett article.
  15. The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong (Darkest Powers 1) Synopsis: The first book in the Darkest Powers trilogy - a brand new series by bestselling author Kelley Armstrong. All Chloe Saunders wants is a life like any normal teenager - the chance to get through school, make friends, and maybe meet a boy. But when she starts seeing ghosts, she knows that life will never be normal again. Soon ghosts are everywhere, demanding her attention. When Chloe finally breaks down, she's admitted to a group home for disturbed kids. At first Lyle House seems okay, but as she gets to know the other patients - charming Simon and his ominous, unsmiling brother Derek; obnoxious Tori; and Rae, who has a 'thing' for fire - Chloe begins to realise that something strange and sinister binds them all together, and it isn't your usual 'problem kid' behaviour. And they're about to discover that Lyle House is not your usual group home, either ... My thoughts: Although obviously aimed at the youth market, Kelley Armstrong maintains her own style and refuses to "dumb down" for a younger audience. The Darkest Powers trilogy is set in the same "universe" as the Women of the Otherworld series (sort of a Teens of the Otherworld!), but is completely seperate from those stories. There's plenty of teen angst - the problems young people face just trying to fit in and be "normal" at a time when everything is changing so fast is a difficult enough time as it is, but if you're a supernatural and don't know it, there's a whole extra set of troubles that can be misinterpreted and this is used to excellent effect, so that the usual "misunderstood teen" angle is given a new slant. There's plenty of action, despite this being the start of character introductions, and there's more than enough there for the reader to get fully invested in the lives of the characters and really care about Chloe and her friends. And to top it off, it's left on a humdinger of a cliffhanger which will leave any reader gagging to get hold of the sequel! This is an excellent introduction, both the the new series and the Armstrong as a writer, for both teen readers and those who haven't already discovered her other books. Grab it, read it, love it! Rating: 8/10 Other titles by this author: WotOW series - Bitten / Stolen / Dime Store Magic / Industrial Magic / Haunted / Broken / No Humans Involved / Personal Demon / Living with the Dead Nadia Stafford series - Exit Strategy
  16. I could hardly see the screen for the tears of laughter! Even Dale laughed at that one and he's a tough audience!
  17. Ooh, I'm so excited for you! I LOVE the Discworld series! As I'm actually up to date with the Discworld novels (I get them as they're published and read them ASAP) I won't be joining in on the challenge, but I'll be watching your progress closely and waiting to hear what you think of all the books as you get to them.
  18. It's my aim. this year, to bring Brom to more peoples' attention - I just loaned my copy of The Devil's Rose to my b-i-l yesterday too. I think Brom is an artist and writer worthy of much attention and acclaim!
  19. Just saw the T mobile ad for the 1st time - totally awsome!
  20. I've flagged it up to watch on Sky at some point...
  21. Wiw, Lexi - I may try some of those myself for my OC!
  22. I've never been bothered about this - I even openly read The Sexual Life of Catherine M by Catherine Millet and Girl with a One Track Mind by Abby Lee at work during my lunch hour!
  23. You could try Different Seasons, Ben - it's a collection of four novellas - his best ones, in my opinion! If you wanted to try a novel though, you could do worse than to start with his first - Carrie. Or, if you fancied something completely chilling, try The Shining. Once you feel up to it, I highly recommend getting hold of the complete and unabridged version of The Stand - it's his magnus opus (or, as Baldrick would say, his magnificent octopus) and one of my all-time favourite books.
  24. I have a total of 5 books on my Amazon wishlist: Always Looking Up by Michael J Fox "Untitled Roman Army Novel" by Simon Scarrow Frostbitten by Kelley Armstrong Made to be Broken by Kelley Armstrong The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong
