  1. I've merged your post with an existing thread. Also, if you do a quick search you will find some threads on separate Koontz books.
  2. No need to apologise, I was just pointing out it was worth flicking through the thread.
  3. I know this is a long thread, but it's worth flicking through, as your question has been asked before.
  4. This is also my review of the graphic novel of The Amulet of Samarkand:
  5. Prisoner of the Inquisition appears to be aimed at the teen market, although there is plenty for older readers to enjoy too. It tells the story of Zarita, the daughter of the town magistrate, and Saulo, the son of a beggar. After being thrown together at the beginning of the story, they follow their own paths before meeting again. Saulo is taken to be a slave at sea, and during this time we see his character shaped by the events which happen to him, and the people he meets – including Christopher Columbus. Meanwhile, Zarita experiences the Inquisition in her town, something which the author describes vividly. At the base of this tale is a love story, but it’s surrounded by the historical events and issues. The length and pacing of the book are both good, and should appeal to teens with limited time. Other historical novels I’ve read and seen seem to be fairly long, where this is a more average length. It’s also very gripping, and difficult to put down. It should provide a good introduction to historical fiction, whilst also sparking an interest in further research about the facts and time-period described.
  6. It's not sci-fi, but have you considered The Hunger Games? It's very captivating, with lots to think about.
  7. Well.. I didn't enjoy the last series that much, probably due to the fact that a) I was mourning the loss of Mr Tennant and b) Amy really annoyed me! However, I have LOVED this series, and have also gone back and rewatched some of series 5, getting much more out of it. I think the new actors and actresses have grown into their parts, and I have to admit that most of the time I find Matt an excellent doctor. As for this series, I was concerned at the beginning that it would all be too complicated, and I still think it may be.. I love the complicated story line, and so does Beth, but I'm sure some younger children and 'casual viewers' may have been put off. I had actually seen River Song's reveal being discussed in spoiler sections before, and it seemed very odd to me.. but whilst watching the episode, it just worked. I think Alex Kingston has been brilliant all series. There is still plenty to explain, but I now have more faith in Moffat that he'll deliver. I think I quite like the idea of a break.. it gives us time to appreciate all we've seen.. and rewatch as necessary.. then we have the return to look forward to. Then, after that, the time span until the next series won't be so long.
  8. Laura, you won the Alison Pick Guest Post comp - can you PM me your address please, so I can get Headline to send out your prize. :)

  9. Yes, and I'm assuming that they are US publishers. My response was to tell you that in my experience with UK publishers, no one has mentioned payment. So no, I don't know of anyone else who pays reviewers.
  10. I deal with quite a few publishers here in the UK, and none have offered to pay myself or our reviewers. I think we're all quite happy just to receive a free book, especially if it's an early review copy! I would imagine that the only way to get paid to review is to work for a newspaper or magazine?
  11. I've deleted one of your posts, and moved the other one to the Promotional section. Please take some time to read our rules.

  12. Before I Go To Sleep is highly recommended! My review:
  13. My understanding was that the kindle only uses power when actually switching pages (as long as wireless is off), so having it in sleep mode doesn't really affect the battery. I never turn mine completely off.
  14. My battery seems to last for ages, but I do try to remember to turn the wireless off.
  15. It sounds as if it could be House of Leaves - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Leaves
  16. Can I please point out that this is actually a forum for readers to discuss books, rather than somewhere to go for language assistance, editing etc. There are some very helpful people here, but we're first and foremost a community to discuss books. With that in mind, maybe you can tell us a little more about yourself and your reading.. do you have a favourite author / genre?
  17. Please do not link to your own commercial store - thank you.

  18. Oh.. I loved The Shining! Agreed! I agree with this one. Also Bill Hussey is one to look out for.
  19. I think I have to disagree with you with regards the first two episodes at least - unless you really pay attention and follow, it would be hard to understand and enjoy. But then that's typical of Moffat, so hopefully some of the other episodes will have that feel to them. I'm also the opposite about the last series - it grew on me as it went along, and I enjoyed the end more. (But then again, I was also grieving no more Mr Tennant! )
  20. I know there's a popular theory that River is Amy's daughter, but I'm having trouble seeing it, and I was wondering if anyone knew the origins of it? Also, is there anyone on here who thinks the show is *too* complicated now? Personally I love it - we've already watched both episodes again, and I've had some good discussions with Beth, and a couple of friends who watch it. However, I can imagine quite a few casual watchers and/or younger viewers who will be completely confused now, and may stop watching. (I've noticed that if you dare to mention this view on other forums, you get shot down in flames, and are told you're stupid! ) I just hope he does manage to explain it all, and wrap it all up, otherwise people will be disappointed.
  21. Did anyone else notice she has a rather large 'watch' on her arm - it looks like the Vortex Manipulator Jack uses.
  22. Hi - can you please take a look at out guidelines about promoting your own books. Thanks,Michelle

  23. I'm starting to get into my kindle a little more now. More importantly, my girls have started using it. Amy who's 7 is already an eager reader, but she thinks the kindle is rather cool, and prefers using it. Beth, who's a very reluctant reader is also picking it up, which is brilliant. In fact, I'm so pleased that I've just ordered a 2nd kindle, so we're not fighting over the same one.
  24. Can I please remind you that we are a 'family forum', and content posted should reflect this. Thanks.

  25. Also, if I've found the correct website for you, and you're a commercial seller, you won't be allowed to sell here.
