(Making things easier for anyone searching.. )
Following on from this post, I decided to go for Mort.. well, in fact, I went for the Death Trilogy. I've started the first few pages, and I think I'm going to enjoy it. It seems to have my sort of humour.
-
I must have read every Famous Five, Secret Seven, St Claires etc etc when I was a little 'un.
-
I agree with you.. and I've read reviews saying the same thing. I wasn't sure if it was just me though.. I read the rest almost one after the other, then I had a gap before Survivor, so I wasn't sure if that was to blame.
The good news is that I saw some reviews on Amazon that say that Origin is back to her usual standard!
-
Well I've just finished it (library book.. needed to go back), and I thought it was pretty good. I'll come along and make some comments once everyone has started on it. (Lou, try to get hold of it.. I would imagine you'd like it.)
-
Yep, as I've said elsewhere.. I now have 'lost boy, lost girl' to read, then I'll probably read this one again.
-
They are all so human in these stories. You can imagine them...hear them. The back stories that are continue to develop. You want to get to know them all. And the language. Not just in story telling, but when the characters speak to each other. Love it when Peabody is being sarcastic, or the way Roarke reads people, the contrasting Dr Mira and the indescribable Mavis. I have never had a problem with remembering what is going on or who is doing what through the series.
I couldn't agree more!
-
I'm afraid I finished this and had already moved on to "lost boy lost girl" before I discovered it's the next reading circle book!
It's only nominated.. voting hasn't finished yet.
Mind you, I've just bought it.. and am looking forward to reading it now!
-
Now or when you were younger.. are there any books that have really scared you.. to the extent of not wanting to switch the light off, or lying there thinking about it?
For me, the only 2 were The Amityville Horror and The Shining.
-
JD Robb.. I guess it's best to start with Glory In Death, which is the first one. I, however, started with book 2 (I keep doing that! lol) Rapture in Death, and decided I wanted to go back to the beginning. I was then totally hooked!
-
I found it hard to score, actually. I had trouble really feeling for the characters, but then that happens in quite a few books. However, overall, it was a fairly enjoyable book.
-
So.. I read this on holiday, which I didn't think I'd be able to do. I read a bit each night, then some in the launderette.
Random thoughts.....
I certainly felt as if I should have read 'lost boy lost girl' first, and in fact I shall probably do so, then go back and read this again.
Having emails crop up near the beginning made me smile, but I ended up getting so annoyed with the IRC-type text.. Cyrax was explaining what was going on, but it was hard to follow.
A fictional character crossing over into the 'real world' was interesting.. how would you feel if you discovered your whole life was nothing but a story, and the author's memories?
I too had problems really attaching to the characters though, and I didn't feel much loss when Willy disappeared.
I can't say Straub has become one of my favourite authors.. I gave up on Mr X, and although this was enjoyable enough, it wasn't great.
Btw, if anyone would like to borrow it, let me know.
-
I've read it on holiday, and will be back later with some comments.
Jo, would it have made more sense to read 'lost boy, lost girl' first?

Chosen Book: In the Night Room - Peter Straub
As a suggestion, please put at the top of your post which chapter you're up to. Then if some one hasn't reached that far, they know not to read that post.
I just feel that if we wait until we've finished to post, because we're all worried about spoilers, many of the smaller discussions will get missed.. we'll end up discussing the book as a whole, instead of particular bits of it that grab our attention. Does that make sense?
-
Are you looking for suggestions for your own children, or wish to reminisce about your own childhood reading?
-
I used to listen to my horror stories in bad, on my walkman, when I was having troule sleeping.
Bit silly, when you think about it!
-
Does any one like listening to audio books? I have to admit that I have a tendency to skim over some descriptive bits in some books, whereas with an audio version, you have to listen to it all.
Mind you, I did once have a tape of old horror stories, which were really good.
-
Do you read one book at a time, or do you often have more than that on the go? I always used to do the former, but now often find I start one book, and my attention gets grabbed by another, so I sometimes end up reading two or more at the same time.. often depending on my mood.
-
Do you have a favourite bookmark, which goes from book to book.. or are you like me, and can never lay your hands on one?! I often grab whichever scrap of paper is closer, or sometimes I try to memorise my page number.. and always forget it!
-
I do have the Time Traveller's Wife sitting in my pile-of-books-waiting-to-be-read
I started that one last night.. will let you know how it goes.
-
Yep, that was 'IT'.
-
How do you choose your books? Do you have particular authors you look for, or will you try anything new? And if new, do you go on recomendations, the story line, or a nice looking cover?!
I will try anything by Stephen King, James Herbert or Stephen Laws. I'm following the series from Jean M Auel, and read every J D Robb book. There are other authors I like, but won't automatically read everything of theirs.
I have been trying to broaden my horizons, and so am always on the lookout. I like the reviews on Amazon, because they're both good and bad, and will sometimes follow recomendations from friends. There has to be a good description on the back of the book, to grab me.. and I must admit, I do like a nice cover too!
-
C'mon, I'm sure we have much more to say about Mr King!
-
Ok...
Mine will probably be a list of the ones I enjoyed, as I tend to forget the ones I didn't!
Frankenstein, Book One - this is the latest of his that I've read, and it is enjoyable.. it takes the Frankenstein story a step further. In fact, I'm looking forward to Book two.
The Taking - Fascinating book, with an end that I wasn't quite expecting! As with alot of books like this, you have such a build up, that the ending is always a slight 'let-down' Still a good book.
False Memory - this was a good thriller.
Demon Seed - a quick, easy read. Highly enjoyable though.
The rest I remember reading, and enjoying, but couldn't tell you much about them. To me, that's typical of Koontz.. most books are enjoyable enough at the time, but nothing too outstanding.
The Eyes of Darkness
From the Cornor of His Eye - This one was unusual, but good.
The Servants of Twilight
Tick Tock
The Sole Survivor

Most people that I ask about this guy will say that they loved some of his books, and didn't like others. I'm the same, and I'm never sure whether to buy a new book of his, just in case it's one I don't like.
Although I know tastes vary, I thought it might be helpful to list some of the titles we've either liked or not liked, perhaps with a quick reason and/or review.
I'll have to go and peek through Amazon to remember, and get back to you....

Excellent book.. I enjoyed that! Now on to the next 2 in the trilogy!
