Illustrations in children's books
Hayley Morgan replied to Michelle's topic in Children's / Young Adult
I think illustrations can make a book more enjoyable (less scary for beginning readers). I had a lot of trouble reading at the start and pictures helped me get through long books and figure out what was being said if there was a new word. The Spiderwick series, Tashi and A Series of Unfortunate books have nice illustrations. For longer books, I read The Iron Trial by Holly Black which has little illustrations at the beginning of each chapter. -

City of..series by Cassandra Clare
Hayley Morgan replied to Bee.'s topic in Children's / Young Adult
I got into the series after all the books were out so no wait. I really enjoyed it, though the 'if clary and jace are related' seemed to just drag on longer than it needed to. I loved Simon and Magnus! Glad they got their own short story series. The Infernal Devices was more enjoyable for me (weird cause i don't like historical, i think one of reason was there was no clary/ jace drama) The new series, Dark Artifacts or something like that, is really good so far. i love the Blackthorn family -
I'm up to the last one but so far i've loved them! the mythology, strong characters and good plots made them so hard to put down. Plus who wouldn't love Tyson the big sweet heart. And the relationship btwn percy and annabeth is so good, it's realistic (most teens don't confess their undying love) and it didn't overwhelm the story.

I have the same problem. I'm in Australia so it can be hard to get US programs. It's on Netflix up to the 3 rd season now. It looks really good but yeah hard to find

I just got into this series (been meaning to read it for ages!) Here's my review: I absolutely LOVED this book!! The scene with Meghan's little brother was so creepy I had to check under my bed! The thing with the dog completely broke my heart. The beginning of the adventure felt well motivated with good twists and turns. The author's writing style was super enjoyable to read, a real page-turner. She's definitely one of my favourites. Puck was hilarious! I'd get sick of him and his pranks in real life but I loved reading about him and his antics. I liked the use of a well-known character, it made him feel like a fuller character. The same goes for other well-known characters used. Grimalkin seemed very similar to The Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland which instantly made me like him. As I got to know him I loved his snarky attitude especially paired with Puck. At first, I found Ash to be a total prick but over the course of the book he won me over. The romance between him and Meghan felt natural, not forced like many romances. Plus, the whole forbidden love angle made it even more addicting! The frightening faeries and creatures were an interesting take on the usual gentle faeries. It felt more in line with the original faeries tales, where faeries were bloodthirsty creatures not to be trusted. Meghan's adventure was an epic trek throughout the entire Nevernever with several unexpected twist and turns. I can not wait to read the rest of the series! I give it 5/5

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

I've read the first and the second book. I love werewolves and found her take on them interesting but over all the books were slow. I just didn't click w them, tho they had potential. -
I loved this series!! It was my first vampire book. Tho they're kinda unusual vampires which was why i enjoyed it so much. Vampires using magic? Awesome. I thought the characters and world were well developed (even giving rise to a spin off series). It was such a shame the movie was a disappointment. They turned it into a teen high school drama but it's not, Rose and Lissa take on various plots for power, even travelling to Russia! It's not like their fighting the mean girl for their crush. *sigh*

I loved the infernal devices series much more than the mortal instruments. Tessa's powers and backstory were so intriguing, i just had to know. plus the bad guy and his clockwork army were really creepy. Especially the clockwork man w a smile of razor blades and saw hands, eek!

I'm sad vampire diaries finished, though some of the stories of the recent season just felt random. I thought the ending wasn't very good. You could see it coming, the characters were always acting the same way and there was no twist or anything. I just want Stefan and Bonnie to get a break, Stefan to get w Caroline and i'm not that fussed about Elana and Damon. Why the heck didn't Jeremy come back??!! The Originals is awesome! It's much more grown up, with the difficult family relationships and all the different New Orleans supernatural factions. It was awesome to learn more about the various supernatural creatures other than vampires:)

Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan
Hayley Morgan replied to Michelle's topic in Children's / Young Adult
I loved the percy jackson series but found this book to be just too long. It didn't capture me like the previous ones. But I like the author so maybe i'll try it again later. Plus the mythology used looks awesome -
The Vampire Diaries By L. J. Smith
Hayley Morgan replied to Sadia Tahna's topic in Children's / Young Adult
I thought Elana was selfish and annoying. The boys were stereotypes and frustrating. I found the books lacked interesting plots and twists such as the link between Elana and Katherine and the doppelganger curse. The TV series was really good for this, I really enjoyed their version of the original vampires. I thought the books would be better than the TV series (since most things are) but it didn't click w me, I found it shockingly bad. Hayley
