The internet can be a really big distraction for me too so every now and again I 'unplug' for the day - no computer and no tablet at all for the entire day.  I don't use my mobile/cellphone for anything other than calls and texts so I'm maybe not as addicted as some people are but it's amazing how much more you get done when you are not distracted by the internet.  I also don't do social media either which probably helps too.  I do have to make the effort though (which can be difficult) but it's actually rather enjoyable to have a non internet day.  Yesterday was actually one for me (I didn't go back to work until today due to a local public holiday here yesterday) and I managed to get through a whole book and made a good start on another one which, due to my recent reading slump, was pretty darn good.

     

    I think I'm going to have to 'unplug' when I participate in BCFs monthly read-a-thon's too because otherwise I'll not get any reading done at all.

     

    I do think you're right. I did do an afternoon yesterday (I was quite pleased with myself actually!) - I'll try and at least reserve non internet time every day while I'm home. I'll certainly get more reading done. Currently getting through a book every 3 weeks on average (and I usually buy more than that!). :)

  2. Hi Maria.  Welcome to the board.

     

    I have just gotten into the world of adult colouring myself and I love it.  I was on annual leave last week and had treated myself to the four Joanna Basford books, along with some rather expensive colouring pencils but it was totally worth it.  I spent the week alternating between colouring and reading and I had one of the most relaxing weeks ever.

     

    How do you do that? I must be addicted to the internet... I can read for a an hour or 2 at a stretch but I feel the need to "look things up" or just do internet stuff constantly.

     

    Conversely when I was a bit overloaded at the beginning of the year, sitting for a couple of hours with crayons and a book was a great way to switch off. Although I always was rubbish at colouring so I expect the 1 book I have will still suffice in 2 years'time, I'm so slow...

  3. Must be the time for colds - I've been getting a scratchy throat for the last 3 days - usually the first sign of me getting a cold. I usually use First Defence at the first sign of colds and that helps a lot in keeping them at bay. Fingers crossed it works again, got enough on my plate at the moment! :giggle2:

  4. Happens a lot with pheasants, they're the most stupid of birds I think! Still horrible to hit one though - I've only had a couple of near misses so far since moving to a more rural area 10 years ago, thankfully. Nothing you could have done though, so don't blame yourself.

  5. Same here Flip Martian, I love being near the sea - although a lake or river will do, even the local duck pond looks good in the sunshine!  They say there's something in sea air which is meant to make you feel better so maybe that has something to do with it?

     

    Could well be. Not sure that accounts for duck ponds though! :giggle2: Agreed though, just lead me to  water, I'll be quite happy. :)

Just got back from a lovely week in Eastbourne, well I don't know what weather we were expecting but it wasent the heatwave that we had.  Not complaining about it, got lots of walking done, went for a trek over beachy head again, even with lots of people out walking I find it so peaceful.

     

    Was so nice to sit out in an evening and listening to the waves crashing on the beach and people watching of course.

    That sounds wonderful. We love being near the coast. How I ended up living in the middle of England I have no idea! But I guess it makes it more special to get away. I could sit and watch the sea for hours, its so relaxing. Maybe I should move... :)

  7. For my boyfriend, the "push yourself and you'll get better" doesn't work. It's definitely not a solution to stay in bed all day or something, but he can easily go over his limits and make things worse. The trick is to find a balance between what's too much and what's doable (and compared with most people, a lot of things are easily too tiring for my boyfriend). It can be hard, because sometimes in the moment my boyfriend feels good, to then feel totally exhausted after he's finished with some physical work. It's like he doesn't feel the extreme tiredness until the day after. Then he has to spend a few weeks recovering. I think in one month he maybe has a few good days, the rest are bleh to really bad. I hope for the best for you and that those therapies help you :). It's true, patience is definitely a good thing to have.

     

    Exactly - this is quite common. And annoying sometimes. Very difficult to find that balance so you don't make things worse. But I will. Doing nothing for the rest of my life is NOT an option! :)

  8. Sorry, I missed the replies on here. I would like to get back to work but...at the moment its not great. I felt ok enough to get out of the house on Saturday and drive myself to the book farm I visit occasionally and had lunch there. But I felt myself getting worse and should have come straight home while there, and didn't. So the last 3 days have been very tired and foggy. I need to listen more closely and not push things, clearly. The normal "push yourself to get fit and you will" thing doesn't apply at all with CF...

     

    Currently work are very supportive but ultimately I need to be able to commute regularly by train to London again. That seems some way off at the moment but I am staying hopeful. I've read some saddening case studies of people far younger than me with this. Terrible really. The consultant I saw will be writing to my GP with details of a specialist centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital - I'm hoping to get referred to there for whatever they can offer. I suspect its CBT and Graded Exercise Therapy, the 2 current treatments.

     

    1 thing I will say about having this - its made me far more patient and accepting of things. Being able to do so little at the moment, patience is definitely something required! :)

  9. Are Amazon then pulping the books or selling them as used? If the latter, they should perhaps be paying more than a few cents.

     

    I tend to give my used books to charity shops. Although I have a few I'm getting rid of which are worth a few pounds so might sell them separately to an online book buying service.

Well being restricted in travelling at the moment I think my wife thought my book buying would be curtailed - but I now have quite a few shops who sell online bookmarked and have had more time to find old books that I was after. There are lots of used bookshops providing a good online service.

    Doesn't beat browsing in a shop though!

  11. I think also, since I started collecting older books, its that history of the book that gets me interested enough to read it, too. If I have a biography that was published 50 years ago, its picking that up and knowing its been owned by people for that amount of time that is part of the enjoyment of ownership.

     

    I guess if I just found a modern book I wanted to read, then an e-book copy would be fine.

I did buy a Sony e-reader a few years ago and its very good - reads all kinds of files, not just Amazon ones - and its e-ink, and not backlit, so its actually very like reading a paper book and nothing like a computer screen. I have taken it on holiday a few times to save luggage space. But it will never replace a proper book for me. Seems that others think the same - sales of e-readers have apparently fallen while paper books have risen, in the last year or so.
