  1. I might as well get them all too lol Although, sometimes I need book or two between. I think I might go with Where We Belong or Second Hand Heart next. I think I might have gotten Athena to read Don't Let Me Go too It's hard to pick a better book of hers than that one (so far) People just don't know what they're missing! Edit: I'm a chronic editor
  2. Just read the Amazon description, sounds really interesting- especially with what is going on in the world right now. Thanks- I have downloaded the Sample. I think your reading challenge is really cool How are the wedding plans going?
  3. How about Angelina Jolie? I'd love for Clive Barker to write one, he has an interesting story going on. How's that for opposite poles?
  4. My school text book is still not here. This is adding to my stress level about this class. It ships today- Thursday- and probably won't be here til Monday. That gives me only 2 days with the book before I start school. I ordered it in mid July.
  5. Gosh, so many of these are SO true lol I love #2- How do you have so much time to read? Reminds me of my mom, she never has enough time to read...*Skeptical* And I know she thinks I spend a tad too much time reading and should be doing other things. #11 is a pretty good one too- I hate that question. Love this
  6. How was Becoming Chloe? I didn't see if you posted it anywhere. Amazon just recommended Second Hand Heart by Hyde to me, you might wanna check it out for a TBR. It's quickly moving up mine.
  7. Oh, ok I know about that now you mention it. I haven't used it since I got my Kindle! Wish I had been smart enough to get 32GB. Mine is only 16 and I'm already feeling a pinch. Mine has the Mayday button, which I use incessantly I know they hate me.
  8. You're just now reviewing Mr. Mercedes??? J/K I didn't even write one, although it was just too hard without giving spoilers, beyond the description of the book. I agree with the something missing part, but I've thought that about some of his other books too. I think his reputation supersedes him. What's up with the cover, do you think? I assume you have the one with the umbrella and raining blood? Interesting about it becoming a trilogy, I'd read them, totally. Anyway, have you finished Sycamore Row? *roll eyes*
  9. How do you find that option? I know where the brightness is, but I can't change anything except font size. Do you have an HDX?
  10. wow- that's interesting- I had no idea about the e-ink technology. I didn't notice the Fire was any different in reading from the Paperwhite! Except in glare. That is a bit of a problem- which they advertised so heavily for their Kindles.
  11. Paperwhites are so nice, but Kindle Fire's are better (Do they have a devil smilie??) BTW- What do you all use your keyboards for?
  12. My best friend with MS is reading this book. She just went through a bad bout, I think it was because the weather was above 100. But she doesn't go out much anymore and has an air conditioner. She also loves comedy and Michael J. Fox's books, even though he has Parkinson's, she finds his struggle similar to hers. *hugs, Devi* I've never poked into your thread, but I hope you don't mind. I hope your fatigue gets less, I know it never fully goes away. This is pretty much the way my friend feels, but with anger, I don't think that will ever go away fully either. I wish I had some roses to send, I'd cut off the thorns.
  13. If I can take a break from the wonderful book I am engaged in, tomorrow I might rent a movie on my Kindle. Not sure what yet, I'm deciding between Nebraska, Dallas Buyers Club, Winter's Bone or 12 Years a Slave (which I just finished reading). Any input?
  14. Such comforting words, thank you! I think slang has a lot to do with the English that is spoken in the US. That and a bad education system, you are right about that part. Parents don't help their children learn or with homework, they expect the school to do it all. I am always correcting my daughter with her brought/ bought, saw/ see, (not, I seen this one thing... ugh) etc. and she is only a month away from 6! I just don't get parents that can let things like that go. We even have adults in the house that speak this way. Honestly, I think it is because they don't read. AT ALL. The non- native speakers on here are much better than I am! Plus, I have that California thing goin' on We are on countdown to the 13th- the first day of school! Her outfit is down to two or three for the first day and I already have mine picked out lol Edit- I love your signature!
  15. It's really short, you can probably do it in two days. It's not harsh, like the clips of the movie I have seen. Not a page turner, but the length of the chapters save it.
  16. Really cool word came up today in my book. Phantasmagorical: phan·tas·ma·gor·ic [fan-taz-muh-gawr-ik, -gor-] adjective 1. having a fantastic or deceptive appearance, as something in a dream or created by the imagination. 2. having the appearance of an optical illusion, especially one produced by a magic lantern. 3. changing or shifting, as a scene made up of many elements.
  17. It looked big and black- I was thinking The Stand Or by the look of him, The Anarchist Cookbook J/K Edited: I had a kitchen that looked just like that once! I loved that little apartment and that time in my life. I wish you happiness!
  18. You read so fast I should've expected it! I just thought it was way cool you read it for the WWI anniversary. I've never read Mary Hooper- do you recommend Poppy? Velvet sounds good- a bit like The Bloodletter's Daughter (although not YA).
  19. The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks
  20. That was quick- didn't you just start Poppy yesterday??
  21. Makes sense. And now that I read the review AGAIN, I think some of my impressions might affect how you read the book. I hate spoilers. Even vague ones, so maybe The Fountainhead review you might wanna stay away from if you feel you might read it in the near future. The distant, distant future, ok, maybe. I even had Alexi add it to her wishlist. I just added 3 spoiler tags, just to be safe if anyone reads it- I just learned how to spoiler tag so beware
  22. 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup 227 pages Genre: Non Fiction In the epilogue of 12 Years a Slave, Solomon Northup nearly apologizes for making his story “too prominently on the bright side”. Indeed, it is on the lighter side of the slave perspective. Choosing to write in first person, Northup tells of his experiences after being kidnapped and sold into slavery. Born a freeman, Northup preservers through those 12 years in stoic character, hardly describing events with any emotion. The book is short, each chapter being only a few pages. In never really inserting his emotions into his experiences, and the manner in which they are described, something was left missing. I did cry once though, so I guess it isn't that unemotional. It is a grim book- plenty of whippings, beatings, cotton picking, ripped apart families and "man's inhumanity to man", but the book is not graphic and you know the outcome by how he narrates and foreshadows. Published in 1853, 12 Years a Slave is dedicated to Harriet Beecher Stowe. 3/5, it was just a normal read, but I would recommend it to those interested in books such as Uncle Tom's Cabin, etc (No, I have not seen the movie, just clips on the Oscars)
  23. You are more than welcome- I'm sure you will love it. It is even better than The war IMO. And I'd love to talk history anytime Just finished 12 Years a Slave and started the dystopian/ apocalyptic Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands by Chris Bohjalian (author of Midwives). I've been waiting to read this since it came out! I have a pile of TBR Kindle Samples of his after loving Midwives. It's even endorsed on the front by... drum roll... Jodi Picoult: "If you need any proof that fiction can scare us, move us and break our hearts simultaneously, look no further."
  24. Yummy! He also has a book of short stories, 20th Century Ghosts, I haven't read all of it, but what I have read (about 35%) has been good. Also, In the Tall Grass is good/ weird, he wrote it with King.
  25. We are BBQing steaks, having them with baked potatoes and asparagus.
