I'm currently reading Some Kind Of Fairytale by Graham Joyce [not bad at all] Are We nearly There Yet? by Ben Hatch [ I want to smack the parents not the children] Mrs Robinson's Disgrace by Kate Summerscale [riveting] and 69 For One by Alan Coren [short pieces, and all very funny.]I delve into these books depending on the mood I'm in. -

well in that case I will give them a go! The films are on tv all the time [on Sky] . I did see the actor who plays Harry in a very funny episode of Extras [Ricky Gervaise series] which shows he can take the p*** out of himself, which is a trait I always admire.

Athena, I haven't read any Harry Potter or seen the films, as I thought they were for children /YA market? Are they any good for adults?

Pontalba, thats a great Roy Orbison clip. I love all his songs, and although he still does have a big fan base, I think he is a very under rated musician and singer, maybe because he was a very 'shy type of person.' That's why he and George Harrison got on so well together, George was shy and hated publicity, even though they both managed good stage performances.

windblown bowler hats of city gents across the busy streets, in fact no end of fun to be had in old London Town. Itsme thanked the bloke from Croyden for his sightseeing tips, sat back on the smelly tube seat and closed his eyes, how tired he wasnow, if only he could find a.......... -
Sounds like you are all a lot fitter than me! I don't like excercise for the sake of excercise [or warnings from the excercise police]but all my life I have been able to have enough energy to do most of the things that I want [or need] to do. I like walking, but don't do more than 2 miles at a stretch, I also like gardening, and the excercise in doing that, plus housework generally, shopping etc stops me getting fat.Now that I am 'pension age' I am a bit kinder to myself and tend to do more of what I actually want to do.I think jogging is an un-natural thing, man is meant to walk, or run fast when danger presents itself. Animals don't jog.The inventor of jogging died while out jogging of a heart attack.Hmmmmmn! Some people do get addicted to excercise for the 'rush' or they want taut muscle packed bodies I suppose [if you don't keep it going though, it all turns into fat.]Didn't a Greek philos. say 'all things in moderation', that's a good philosophy to live by I think, can't think of a better.Although somebody else[ Noel Coward?] said 'you should try everything once,......except incest and morris-dancing'.

Need help finding a book title!
gardengirl replied to tnbkfan1's topic in Crime / Mystery / Thriller
Hi there, I'm going to have a hard think about this because it sounds really familiar, and am sure that I have read it, but years and years ago think it was by a female British writer , but...... hmmmmn it's there on the edge of my memory somewhere! -
I think I am showing my age by my choices of music! However, classics are classics be it music, films or books.

Hi Cuppycakes, there is a new historical docu starting next week with Lucy Worsley[ she is very eccentric and engaging] can't remember the title, sorry.I am watching Educating Yorkshire and also the docu on Harrow School [public school, which here in England means a top private school for 13-18 yr olds.]Also saw The Beatles Decade, which is interesting [i was a young teenager when the Beatles made She Loves You about 1963?] They came to my town in I think 1964 and I went with friends to see them

'wossat mean guv?' asked the coachman pocketing his half tenner, but Itsme didn't answer, turned up his collar against the damp night and stalked off down the nearest dark alleyway. There was no sign of any gold in or on the pavements, but Itsme had to hop over many bits of......... -

How are you liking Peaky Blinders Dex?Only watched half of the first one, thought it was a western instead of Birmingham after the First World War, but maybe it got better? I'm watching Orphan Black which seems quite interesting, and Educating Yorkshire[ and often not being able to educate them!]

Stephen King - Doctor Sleep (The Shining Sequel)
gardengirl replied to Michelle's topic in Horror / Fantasy / SF
Not one for me I'm afraid! I saw Stephen King on tv the other day, and that's when he was talking about this book, it was the first I had heard of it. I thought, 'oh good' because I thought the film of The Shining was excellent [had not read the book.]He said in the interview that he hadn't liked the film at all, so I am guessing the book was quite a bit different and perhaps a bit more horror filled? I don't 'do' horror, so am very selective with Kings books. Thank you for the synopsis Michelle, I won't now be reading it, 'the slow torture of children?' ugh. -
Popular novels in the 40s?!
gardengirl replied to Jackal's topic in Book Search and Reading Recommendations
Hello Jackal, welcome to forum.Agatha Christie books were [and still are] popular [you can google the titles] there were loads. J.B Priestly books were popular in the 1920s to 1940s Angel Pavement is the title of one very popular book , also An Inspector Calls. Evelyn Waugh is another author [male writer] Vile Bodies being I think an early book.Somerset Maughn was also read a lot back then, The Razors Edge is one of his best.I think however, that you would be better off just googling 'best selling authors in the 1940s' that should bring up a load of titles for you. Good luck! -
I agree with the above comment from signor finz. It is your own book rms, that you have worked hard on,with a few tweaks, you can make your synopsis more attractive to an agent.Just make it clear to the agent if it is an adult or young adult book. There is obviously going to be more than unicorns in it [why are unicorns any more derisive than vampires????] Go for it!

I really enjoyed this book. I don't read horror novels, but this is not a horror, think the advertising for it is very mis-leading.It's slightly creepy at most, and very atmospheric.I thought it was really contempory fiction with a slight supernatural twist, so it was perfect for me, as I don't do fright-fests!
