I think it is interesting that it brought more of the inner world of bdsm to 'mainstream' america, but erotica has been around for a long time, and way more well written...
The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy written by Anne Rice, published under the pseudonym A. N. Roquelaure is what comes straight to my mind.
As a big fan of Erotica, I agree with you.
Fifty Shades of Grey was funny, repetitive and no imagination whatsoever, money not well spent but I try not to regret any book I buy.I am surprised at the popularity of it,and so many more books after that with the same "idea". There is so much better to read if you want something in this genre.

I cannot express why I love short stories but just the thought of them makes me smile, I am constantly on the look out for interesting collections to read and it is not because I do not like reading long stories because I read and enjoy both equally. Many short stories even consisting of only 3 pages can be more magical and memorable than a 1000 page book, that's depending on the author's talent ofcourse.
I agree and one of those stories for me was A Good Man is Hard to Find-Flannery O' Connor.
