I see this book mentioned around this board already. I've watched the movie yesterday and I liked it.. mostly. Unfortunately it's targeting a much younger audience . Is the book targeting the same audience?

Somenone read Joyland? I bougth it and it went directly to my shelf waiting for better days .

Another vote for Carrion Comfort. It's the best book I've read in a while. Wouldn't qualify it exactly as a horror novel though.

I just finished that. It's indeed a good book. A bit outdated and probably because of that I prefer the Chronicles of Amber. However I was pleasantly surprised when I found that there was an attempt to make a movie out of that book back in '79 and this is actually the script that CIA used in their famous operation in Iran. I always thought unicorns are too mystical and hard to even spot. They always represent the nature and work as deus-ex-machina. To be honest I hate them and this is mostly because in all movies the horn attached to the horse is so ridiculously moving as the animal is walking around. I fully agree with Sakura that they are a big cliché. Hunting unicorns for pleasure sounds interesting but I can't imagine the rest of the story. Should be a really messed up world...

Ah I love zombies. Classical zombies I mean. They are so slow, and miserable. You may always outrun them unless caught by surprise. Do not fear them I always enjoy how they are presented - big crowds, very persistent, always enraged, highly resistent to chainguns and they always die first before the primary evil in the movie/book is revealed (kind of sad lol). I watched recently movie. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece but if you have some time to waste you may check and see the zombies from a different angle.

I think that the idea was that If you don't go too deep into that it is somehow acceptable. There are some prety handsome zombies in the movie. If you ask me that's the best reason to watch it. It's probably the best I've seen after Resident Evil 1.

The Dark Tower by St. King. Still remember my roommate asking me if I've read it and his surprise when I said no. We're both huge St.King fans . There were only 4 parts published back at the time.

I'd recommend Stephen King. He uses similar approach in almost all of his books. In smaller scale probably but he likes to stretch minutes of time into tenths of pages describing thoughts/feelings for each of his characters and their own understanding about certain events in the book. I won't give exact names but you may check something from his early years.

My TBR list just increased About the chronicles of Amber it seems many of you read it but just didn't like it so much. Do you mind sharing why? It's one of the first fantasy book i've ready and perhaps that's why it has so special meaning to me. A couple of books to recommend: Le Talef d'Alkoria by Dan Dastier - couldn't find the english name. Very short and easy to read book. The Star Diaries of Ijon Tikhi by Stanislaw Lem - 7th voyage is my favourite.

Haven't read any of his books yet, but I plan on finishing the Wheel of time where he wrote the last 3 parts. I'm a huge fan of magic but I always need to know how it works and why. This is what I'm missing in part 1 of The Malazan Book. Soft magic as he calls it almost always lead to contradictions and when the character starts flying in part 10 you always ask yourself why the hell didn't he fly in previous 9 parts . For me even predictable characters is better than that.

Heh, actually i couldn't finish The wheel of time either. I stopped on part 8 when i lost my interest. Today I came across an article on the Wiki mentioning Sanderson's First Law. The "Hard Magic" is definitely my favourite and probably that is what I missed in The Lord of the rings or Harry Potter. Perhaps the only exception is The cronicles of Amber.

It was actually not that bad. It's about Roland when he was young and I really missed that in all parts after 4.

I stopped reading this book on part 8. It was a big let down after 6 great parts and up to this day I keep the rest of the books on my shelf waiting to be read. I've read many good comments about the end and the great job Brandon did and I want to start re-reading it. Do you think I should start with New Spring as it's the prequel. Is it easy to get into his world from that part?

I have hight expectations too. That's why I started with Under the Dome as I'll probably never read it otherwise. 11/22/63 will be my next. Well if you ask me they get worse and worse including the end itself, but King is right that the end is not so important, it's how you get there. I myself hate leaving a book in the middle so I would read it up to the end. There are some parts that where realy interesting so probably it's worth reading it.

I've read the first part only and I'm still not sure if I'll continue reading. It was really interesting and I've read it in one breath. However his mythology seems rather chaotic. The hierarchy and the power of his mythology creatures is so confusing. In one moment he describes a creature so powerful and terifying that will lead the world to an end and on the next chapter a new creature arrives and slains the first one with one hit only. WTF? He's obviously focusing on his characters and the complex game of influence and completely skrewing up the "magic" part. I feel a little disapointed but I'll probably give it a try again in an year or so.

St. King is for sure my favourite author. Unfortunately as years go by I think I've lost my interest. I still buy all his book but it's getting very difficult and painful to read . I still don't know if that's because i've grown up or just he lost his way. The Dark Tower - very very good, at least the first 4 parts. I remember staying awake in the morning just to finish each book and screaming (when nobody home) - "Nooo .... what have you done" after certain events in the book happen. Part 4 is the best ever, though 1-3 are really, really good. From 5 onwards was such a pain reading. Probably due to my high expectations. The Talisman - very good. The Dark House - hard to read, probably because I'm not 16 any more . The Green Mile - very good. A good quote - "We each owe a death-there are no exceptions." Excelent movie based on that book. One of the 3 movies that are equally good as the book itself (along with Shawshank's redemption and room 1408) It - I remember flipping the book over or covering it before going to sleep as I couldn't stand the clown watching me . Terrifying and very interesting book. Salem's lot - For months after reading this book I couldn't sit in the dark. Road works, Firestarter, Rage, The eyes of the dragon - generaly all of his "pre-accident" books seemed to me very very good. Re-reading them gives me the same pleasure so I guess it's not me. I'm currently chewing on Under the Dome but i'm on like 120 page after 3 months
