I think it is interesting that it brought more of the inner world of bdsm to 'mainstream' america, but erotica has been around for a long time, and way more well written... The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy written by Anne Rice, published under the pseudonym A. N. Roquelaure is what comes straight to my mind. -
