  1. I read this book in my teens, and remember enjoying it a lot! I think I focused on the positive thinking throughout and perhaps gave less weigthing to other aspects like the religious messages, which did not affect me much at the time. I agree with the few comments above stating that this book remains a book to be read.
  2. Delaila, I saw your post too late! I haven't seen the Horrid Henry movie, but all the reviews I've heard of it were not amazing... I hope your son enjoyed it nevertheless, I guess if the little man is obsessed then he will have wanted to judge for himself
  3. I have to admit I do love poetry when it has been explained to me, so definitely have favourite poets and poems amongst the material I covered at school. But having said that, I have given new poetry (meaning poetry that I didn't know already from class) a try, and I just can't seem to get into it, I get frustrated when I don't understand the hidden meanings.
  4. Thanks Gabbie, you are right about the different interpretations that people can give to a certain play. In fact, it may be interesting to see different standpoints, I will try to accept the likelihood of a different interpretation and make my choice Will let you know how it goes!
  5. Great review Star, thanks. This one is definitely next up!
  6. I am with you on this one. Given the huge success of her previous work, it must have been quite daunting to plot this one. If she had published under a pseudonym, she would have only been criticized for avoiding the pressure of having to live up to the high expectations of people...
  7. Like most of you have already said, audiobooks are amazing when for some reason (be it specific conditions, or just an attempt at multitasking... ) reading is made impossible. I have to admit, I would always rather read at my own pace, as I often find myself re-reading passages that are key to the storyline, or simply parts that are in my opinion amazingly written, over and over again.
  8. Interesting point, I had never really expressed an opinion. I guess this means I don't mind, as long as the book is well written and that the person used (first or third, whatever it may be) is not bothering me as I read, then I don't think I have a preference.
  9. Buying books is addictive! The sad thing is, they take up too much space in my apartment, so the day I'll have to sell some is approaching fast
  10. Wilfred Owen's poems are very good, I've always liked them. I also like this one, from Frederic Manning: Grotesque These are the damned circles Dante trod, Terrible in hopelessness, But even skulls have their humour, An eyeless and sardonic mockery: And we, Sitting with streaming eyes in the acrid smoke, That murks our foul, damp billet, Chant bitterly, with raucous voices As a choir of frogs In hideous irony, our patriotic songs.
  11. Hahaha this sounds just like a definition out of urban dictionary!
  12. I've always been fascinated by rhythmic gymnastics! It's such a beautiful sport It looks like the track events are the most popular so I think it would be amazing to beat bolt!
  13. This series was recommended to me by one of my friends whose children read quite extensively. My daughter loved the characters and is eager to read more! Like you said deborah, the books are superbly written and I've now recommended them to most of the parents at my nursery
  14. Yes! I always tend to think that sequels are just the result of the author realising how successful their first book was, and trying to drag the story out as much as they possibly can....... Am I wrong?
  15. Nicely put, Hanananah. I read this book for school, and think it's one of the best books set in those times.
