The Good Citizen Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 I've only recently started to read some SciFi as I thought I should give it a go. I've read Asimov Foundations trilogy, some Ray Bradbury and Philip K Dick and enjoyed them all but its clear Sci-Fi is quite a broad term as they differ in style and content greatly. Does anyone have any must reads? I liked Philip K Dick as he had a certain level of character development and centres as much on the human impact of future technology and how it alienates people from themselves. I think I prefer that to the purer SciFi of Asimov which is more solely about imagining and creating future worlds. But I'm open to reading anything really? Quote

These are absolute 'musts', and all classics of the genre: The Forever War - Joe Haldeman The Stars My Destination - Alfred Bester Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card The Anubis Gates - Tim Powers Dune - Frank Herbert Hyperion - Dan Simmons I Am Legend - Richard Matheson The Kraken Wakes/The Day of the Triffids/The Midwich Cuckoos - John Wyndham The Time Machine - H. Banks Voyage - Stephen Baxter The Skinner - Neal Asher Chasm City - Alastair Reynolds I would keep going, but I reckon that's my 'essentials' Quote

Karsa Orlong Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Voyage sounds interesting so I might give that a go next! It's a terrific book, especially if you have any interest in the Apollo era and what might have happened had JFK lived. Quote

Karsa Orlong Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 I'm getting too predictable. I can't help it Jack is my hero. There's nowt wrong with that - it's not like I haven't mentioned all the books above several (hundred) times already Quote
Ooshie Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 My favourite of the genre is probably Neuromancer by William Gibson. Quote
Amesy Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Karsa mentioned everything I was going to suggested. I'm going to throw "The HitchHickers Guide to the Galaxy" in there. It's an Highly amusing read. The Night's Dawn trilogy is my biggest suggestion though. Epic on a scale second to none. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Karsa mentioned everything I was going to suggested. Bloody Karsa - I'd trust him about as far as I could throw him (which wouldn't be far). Quote
