ian Posted March 14, 2012 Author Posted March 14, 2012 It's been a while since I posted on this, so I thought I'd better update. In my defence, I've been reading a whole stack of books that are all tie-in novels to the old TV series "Quantum Leap". They're all fairly short books and I thought I would zip through them all in no time at all. Wrong! For those who aren't aware of the TV series, it follows the adventures of Sam Beckett, a scientist experimenting with time travel. He postulates that he can travel to anytime within his own lifetime and observe the past. However, when he activates the machinery, instead he leaps into the body of someone else. Only Al, his partner back in the future can see him as he really is, and can observe and talk to Sam, but not touch anything. He can only leave the body of the person he is in by putting something that went wrong in someone's life right. Then he leaps to the next person (usually the next episode). So far I've read 3 of the books The Beginning by Julie Robitaille - this follows the original first episode. As such, it doesn't scan particularily well, 3/5 Too Close for comfort by Ashley McConnell - 3/5 The Wall By Ashley McConnell - 4/5 So that's books 7,8 & 9 Currently reading Book 10 - Carny Knowledge by Ashley McConnell. I think there are about 10 or 12 of these books altogether that I was given (really must count them, but all I actually see is a lovely tall stack of TBR books!) Quote
ian Posted March 21, 2012 Author Posted March 21, 2012 Finished "Carny Knowledge" by Ashley McConnell - 4/5 - book 10 & "The Ghost and thr Gumshoe" by Julie Robitaille 3/5 - book 11 Now starting "Knights of the morningstar" by Melanie Rawn Quote
ian Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 Finished "Knights of the Morningstar" - 3/5 (book 12) Now started Quantum Leap - Prelude by Ashley McConnell (book 13) Quote
ian Posted March 29, 2012 Author Posted March 29, 2012 Finished "Prelude" by Ashley McConnell - another 4/5. Some of these books really are very good. And I still have another 5 or so to read! So now it's "Quantum Leap - Search & Rescue" - by Melissa Crandall (book 14) Quote
Ooshie Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 I loved the series 'Quantum Leap' back in the day, but hadn't even realised that there were books! Quote

In my defence, I've been reading a whole stack of books that are all tie-in novels to the old TV series "Quantum Leap". They're all fairly short books and I thought I would zip through them all in no time at all. Wrong! This is one of my favorite shows! I was maybe 12 years old when they first showed the series over here, I remember spending many happy hours on Mondays watching it. Great storylines, and I loved (still do!) Scott Bakula I didn't realise these were turned into books until very recently when I noticed a copy at a local secondhand bookshop. I didn't buy it, because I thought it might be really bad. Overall, would you recommend the books? Quote
ian Posted April 10, 2012 Author Posted April 10, 2012 Hi Frankie, Of the ones I have read so far, I've enjoyed the one written by Ashley McConnell the most. These are all original stories with at least some of the action taking place with Al back in the "future" at the project lab itself. The one's by Julie Robitaille were novelisations of existing episodes and I didn't enjoy those nearly as much. On that note, I've finished "Search & Rescue" (4/5) and have now started "Random Measures" by Ashley McConnell (book 15) Quote
ian Posted April 16, 2012 Author Posted April 16, 2012 Finished "Random Measures" over the weekend, and have now started two books. I don't normally do this, so we'll see how we go! Pulitzer by L.Elizabeth Storm (yes, ANOTHER QL book) plus "The old Curiosity Shop" bu Dickens Quote

Of course I want to read the better ones, but on the other hand, I'd love to read the ones that are based on existing episodes! I think I'll try any book that I can find at a reasonable price with reasonable effort Thank you anyways! Quote
ian Posted April 24, 2012 Author Posted April 24, 2012 Finished "Pulitzer" (book 15). I've discovered that I can't read more than one book at a time, so I've had to halt "The Old Curiosity Shop" for the time being. I really want to finish all the QL books before I move onto anything else. I have two more to read So now it's "Odyssey" by Barbara E Walton (book 16) Frankie, once I've finished them all, I'd be happy to box all these books up and post them to you, if you let me know your address. Quote
ian Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 Managed to finish "Odyssey". It was a bit of a struggle at first, but the last few chapters flew by, and there was a very nice little twist at the end that I should have seen coming but didn't. So overall it's a 3/5 So I'm onto the very last QL book Double or Nothing by C.J.Henderson (book 17) Quote
ian Posted May 6, 2012 Author Posted May 6, 2012 Finished Double or nothing, which was OK, but not great - just a three out of five. That's all the QL books finished Now I go back to The Old Curiosity Shop Books read in 2012 = 17 Quote
frankie Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Frankie, once I've finished them all, I'd be happy to box all these books up and post them to you, if you let me know your address. That is really very kind of you, but you do realise I live abroad, right? I believe they would take a lot of space and they would weigh a lot so it would cost you a fortune to send them over and I really can't have you do that But thank you anyways, it was a really nice thought :flowers2: Quote

I had realised you are in Finland, and I have no idea how much that would cost! Ian Quote
ian Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 Well, a marathon reading session over the last couple of days saw me finally get to the end of The Old Curiosity Shop. I've read quite a few Dickens in the past, but knew next to nothing about the story of this, bar the famous Oscar Wilde quote about Little Nell. I really enjoyed this book. There's something about the way Dickens writes (and indeed other writers of this era) that really appeals to me. Having said that, it is a very long book , and the last chapter feels a little superfluous (it's fairly obvious how it's all going to end by then). Still, I really enjoyed it so I'm giving it 5 out of 5. It is also the first book read on then Kindle My count seems to have gone awry, but according to the list I've got of what I've read so far (Yes I really am that sad!) that was book 19. Book 20, is a complete change of pace & subject "The Way I See It" - By Alan Sugar Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 according to the list I've got of what I've read so far (Yes I really am that sad!) That makes all of us on here sad, then Quote
ian Posted May 20, 2012 Author Posted May 20, 2012 That makes all of us on here sad, then That's a relief! It's not just me then! Quote
ian Posted May 20, 2012 Author Posted May 20, 2012 Finished the Alan Sugar book. At first I didn't think I was going to enjoy this, as it seemed to be one long rant about this and that, without any proper structure. Then it settled down and got much better. I suppose that whether you like this book will depend on your opinion of Alan Sugar himself. In our house, The Apprentice is essential viewing, so I was always going to enjoy what he has to say. As you can imagine, he's not afraid to speak his mind! Books read = 20. Next - don't know yet! Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Hope you enjoy it, Ian - that's one of his best imo Quote
ian Posted May 28, 2012 Author Posted May 28, 2012 Hope you enjoy it, Ian - that's one of his best imo Loved it! Scored 5/5 for me. I got most of his other books waiting for me on the Kindle, but my Mother-in-law had lent me a book a while back, so I wanted to read this before going back to the world of Reacher. So, my next book is Michael Connelly "Echo Park" One thing that I did notice was that there were lots of spelling mistakes on the kindle version of this. Half the time "Reacher" was down as "Readier", which really got on my nerves after a while! Books read this year = 21 Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 One thing that I did notice was that there were lots of spelling mistakes on the kindle version of this. Half the time "Reacher" was down as "Readier", which really got on my nerves after a while! Yeah, sometimes the OCR process on older books leaves very annoying side effects, and the publishers seem to be taking the cheapest, quickest route possible to get them on Kindle (I.e. no proof reading). Glad you enjoyed it, though. Quote
Kylie Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 I think that's terrible. If you're paying for a book on a Kindle, you should be getting your money's worth (I.e. proof read). It surely wouldn't be so hard to go through a file and at least change some of the most glaring errors (like the main character's name!) Find/Replace takes 2 seconds. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Totally agree, Kylie. It's publisher greed, imo. Quote
ian Posted May 31, 2012 Author Posted May 31, 2012 Finished Echo Park. I'd give it 3/5. It was good, but the plot was a bit obvious. Not his best, but Michael Connelly's books are a high standard, so still pretty good Now on to "Tripwire" by Lee Child Books read this year = 22 Quote
