frankie Posted January 31, 2012 Author Posted January 31, 2012 Right...your lists are now copied on my laptop! I don't know what you plan to do with them... but enjoy Quote
anisia Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 I don't know what you plan to do with them... but enjoy Use them as excellent inspiration. I think I'll print them and take them to the library with me...I always go there and get the most random books possible, because I can't remember what I actually want to read Quote
frankie Posted January 31, 2012 Author Posted January 31, 2012 Use them as excellent inspiration. I think I'll print them and take them to the library with me...I always go there and get the most random books possible, because I can't remember what I actually want to read Well in a way they are very random books in the list as well, because you've not chosen them yourself I can't wait to see if your trip to the library will bear fruit and you'll read something off our lists And maybe hate the book and come on here and rant Quote
frankie Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 Lately I have discovered this new sensation within me: I'm growing dissatisfied with my bookshelves. I've never before been that picky about the look of the books I buy, but nowadays I'm becoming more and more aware of how beautiful some covers are, and how beautiful some covers are not. I think this has to do with my New Year's resolution of sticking to original copies only. This narrows down my options quite a lot, and instead of being able to get just whatever in the charityshops and the free book trolley at the library, I'm now reduced to ordering online, and the BookDepo's original copies are so much more beautiful than the bland generic Finnish copies I'm used to. I should really take pictures to illustrate my dilemma. So, I'm actually going to do something that is very unlike me: get rid of all the books that annoy me. The Finnish translations, that is. They will be mostly copies I've bought at the library sale for 20cnt or ones that I've acquired for free at the book trolley at the library, so the financial loss isn't severe at all, and not really a factor in this. I just want to be more happy about the books I own. And this way I will also get rid of a lot of books I feel like I 'ought to read' for challenges etc, which will then give me more time to read the books I really want to read. I wanted to share this with you just to prove that I'm not a terrible book hoarder! And here's the tentative list: - Siri Hustvedt: What I Loved (will be replaced by an English original in the future) - Siri Hustvedt: The Sorrows of an American (^) - Jeff Lindsay: Darkly Dreaming Dexter (found an English copy to replace this) - John Updike: The Witches of Eastwick - Jonathan Coe: What a Carve Up! - Gloria Naylor: The Women of Brewster Place - Toni Morrison: Jazz (I've tried reading the Finnish translation and it doesn't get me in the mood) - Toni Morrison: Beloved (fearing the same would happen with this ^) - Vikram Seth: An Equal Music - Philip Roth: I Married a Communist - William Gibson: Neuromancer - Julian Barnes: Talking It Over There are also a bunch of books that I won't be re-reading or that I wish to find in English for keeps, that I will be getting rid of: - Dai Sijie: Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress (my copy was a really hard to read hardback, I wish to acquire a paperback copy someday) - L. M. Montgomery: The Story Girl (this is the book which inspired the TV series Road to Avonlea, which is my favorite Montgomery TV series, but I didn't enjoy the book at all, the stories weren't the same, and it was told not from the main character's point-of-view but her cousin's, who played a very small part in the series) - Chelsea Cain: Evil at Heart (I loved the first two books in the series but was disappointed with this third novel) - Azar Nafisi: Reading Lolita in Tehran (do I need to elaborate?) - Susan Hill: I'm the King of the Castle I will also have to consider giving away my Finnish copies of the Austens. I now have all the Austens in English (except for Mansfield Park, but I hate that book anyways), and I don't really need the Finnish copies. But I love my copy of P&P, it has such a beautiful cover (although it is in bad shape otherwise), and it was the first book I ever read by Austen, and probably the exact same copy And I also love my Finnish copy of Persuasion. Do I really have the heart to give them away? S&S I can give away, I'm not attached to that copy.) I was also considering giving away my Finnish copy of Misery by Stephen King. I bought the English title last year, so I don't need the Finnish one, but I got it in -95, it's one of the first King's I've ever read, and I've even drawn a map of how I think the house of Annie is layed out. And I've underlined my favorite parts. Back in -97. And when I was erasing those underlinings so it would be more presentable to the secondhand bookshop I was going to take it, I read some of them and they were brilliant parts, the translator did a great job, for once, with a King (his translations are usually a case of the old hit or miss, either exactly spot on or awfully horrid), and there were some great Finnish details. Oh I cannot give it away, how could I when I'm listing all the reasons why I want to keep the copy! I will do more digging today. Quote
frankie Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 More digging has been done. - V.S. Naipaul: In a Free State (I think I rescued this from a dumpster) - Eudora Welty: The Optimist's Daughter (I just read this, was pretty awful) - Max Lundgren: 21 nästan sanna berättelser - Scott Frost: The Autobiography of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper: My Life, My Tapes (have since found an English copy) - James McBride: The Color of Water - Audrey Niffenegger: The Timetraveler's Wife - Helen Fielding: Bridget Jones's Diary I & II (I have the English copies) - Iain Banks: The Crow Road (have since found a really nice English copy) - Colm Tóibín: Brooklyn - Margaret Drabble: The Ice Age (like I'm really going to ever read this) and a few others. This is going to decrease my TBR pile by 15 titles! Quote
Kylie Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Wow, I'm very impressed, Frankie! Think how much room you'll have now for new books! Yay! Quote
frankie Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 ^ Oh but I won't use that room for new books, I shall use it to rearrange my books in a more organized, eye-pleasing manner No book buying for me! Quote
frankie Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 (edited) Wow! I just realised some of the books that have nasty library stickers, well some of them aren't laminated over, but can be removed and I can use my Bosisto's to restore the book! And what's best, when I discovered this I took a look at my beautiful, yet in-a-bad-way copy of Pride and Prejudice, and luckily it's one of those books that have the stickers on top of the lamination and not the other way around, so they can be removed and the book will become so much more beautiful! I will have to take a picture of it before and after so you can see the amazing difference!! I'm so excited!!! Edited February 7, 2012 by frankie Quote
vodkafan Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 ^ Oh but I won't use that room for new books, I shall use it to rearrange my books in a more organized, eye-pleasing manner No book buying for me! Sorry Frankie but your last statement started me in hysterical insane laughter that I could not suppress. The idea of you not buying books took me to the edge of madness please don't do that again. I don't even believe you will be able to get rid of any of the books you singled out. Hey I have an idea. Some of the Finnish translation books that you were going to get rid of but liked the covers....why don't you frame the covers maybe together like in a set and hang them on the wall? You said they were mostly charity books so no financial agony. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I can use my Bosisto's to restore the book! I have no idea what that is Is it like Neil Diamond's Mr Bojangles? Quote
Kylie Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Karsa, it's a brand of Eucalyptus oil that Frankie got here in Oz. I'm glad it'll work on P&P for you. I look forward to seeing pics! Quote
frankie Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 Compare if you please: and and! Notice a difference? Quote

It sounds like it's not many so finding space for them wouldn't be a problem. Only get rid of books you don't care three straws for. I know what you mean about being picky regarding books for your bookshelves. I tend not to keep the old broken down copies I buy at charity shops unless they're favourites .. I just throw them back at the shop (they've learnt to duck now when they see me coming ) but it's still a great way of buying books that you're not sure are going to be keepers. Try not to make any rash decisions .. I wish I'd kept all the original Enid's that I read ... I have a great fondness for the covers even though they were a bit naff. Getting hold of those now is not so easy (being antiques like me ) Good luck with the clearout though .. you'll probably feel better once you've offloaded all those books and rearranged all your favourites. It's nice to look at your shelves and see all your favourites .. you don't want to be disturbed by any errant Madame Bovary's (I'm not highlighting her .. she doesn't deserve it ) That Bosisto's stuff works wonders .. like magic Quote

Several times in the last year or two I've found myself wanting to re-read a book I'd got rid of. So naturally I had to buy them again Quote
frankie Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 (edited) I'm impressed! (The three weren't treatable but I don't mind) Looks like I know what I'm going to be doing in the evenings from now on.... I've got a lot of work! Edited February 7, 2012 by frankie Quote

Kylie Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 When you take your big-ass books over to VF's bookcase, you can take your doggy (aww! So cute!) so the tiny Finn can take the tiny dog for a walk. Did you put the dog there on purpose for the photo? Wow, your books have scrubbed up really nicely! I bet your place and your books smell really good now. Quote
