julie Posted January 7, 2012 Author Posted January 7, 2012 I am still laughing picturing trying to put lipstick on a chicken Yea,VF,that's just one of our hillbilly sayings here in our town. We have lots of them like that . And yea, I think it'd take more than one person to put lipstick on a chicken . Quote
vodkafan Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 You have to get a good grip of it in between your knees first then I don't foresee a problem Quote
julie Posted January 8, 2012 Author Posted January 8, 2012 (edited) You have to get a good grip of it in between your knees first then I don't foresee a problem It almost sounds as if you have tried it ! You have a good idea of how to do it . Believe it or not, when I was in my nursing class, we had to earn money to have our class graduation party ,so one of the girls got the class a job "picking chickens" . They had wooden crates and a huge building of chickens in cages. We had to go through and grab them by their legs and shove them into the crates to load onto the trucks . I am guessing they were going to that Feathery Heaven where all other chickens go,after being pressed and chunked into chicken McNuggets . Anyhow, we earned our money for the whole party by picking chickens . We never took the time to DUDE THEM UP with lipstick . Where they were going, lipstick was kind of a waste of time . vodkafan Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 . We never took the time to DUDE THEM UP with lipstick . DUDE them up? In England we would say Tart them up. Quote

julie Posted January 14, 2012 Author Posted January 14, 2012 Well, I just completed book 2 for the 2012 list . I must say ,this one was possibly one of the best books I have read in a long time . If Jack's In Love by Stephen Wetta . I'm trying to figure out how to sum this book up without giving the story away . Let's just say first of all that the title is really puzzling in a way, because it sounds like it might be such a different book than it really is . Jack is the main character in the story, a boy from the "wrong side of the tracks" who never really fits in .It tells of the pain of being a person like that and how it must feel to be that kid in school, the one that no one really associates with ,due to the fact that he is judged solely on the place he lives and the famiy he comes from . The book is told in Jack's voice ,that of a 13 year old boy ostracised by almost everyone in town, kids and adults alike, although no one really takes the time to get to know him and see the good he has inside . As the story begins, you are immediately told what happens to some of the family before you know how they got to the end. This book was a real gem ,for me anyhow, because I love books like this that can teach me about LIFE and how someone that lived a different life than me probably felt growing up. We all know kids like that and can clearly remember them ,years later, and wonder whatever happened to them, if they were able to leave our town and make a success of their life by overcoming small-town prejudices and just plain unfairness towards people, based on narrow-minded thinking more than anything . This book tells you the story of what it's like to BE that kid ,grow up in that house and handle the rejection . In a way, Jack really is in love of a sort throughout the book,.It really isn't the main theme of the book ,but everything that occurs in the book revolves arounnd it . In the end ,there are some facts that you know are going to happen, but others that end in a twist you didnt see coming . The best part of the book,I think, is the end when the author tells you a short story of where he got the idea for the book ,and then when you read the short bio of the author and how he grew up, it is very surprising to see how that somehow ties in with the entire book. No, he wsn't Jack, but he knew a Jack, which we all do . He was the lucky kid who wasn't Jack, but may have ended up a lot worse off in his adult life than "his" Jack did . Definitely would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I hardly ever give a book 5 stars, but this one gets 5 and possibly higher, because it teaches a lot about life if you will take the time to think about it . Quote
pontalba Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Great review Julie, thanks. I've wondered if the book was one I'd like. Now I know it certainly is. Quote
julie Posted January 14, 2012 Author Posted January 14, 2012 Pontalba I'd recommend it to anyone. So VERY good . Such a surprise at the end when you find out about the author's life . (If you get it on Kindle, don't read that first, save it for the flower on top of the cake . Quote
pontalba Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I've added it to my wish list on Amazon. Quote
frankie Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I'm glad you like my theme idea . I sat here the other day and wrote out 1 for each month, then just kept thinking of more and more ,so I added a bunch to the list in case I want to pick a different one than the one I wrote out for that month . It sounds just like with books: you've decided to go with 12 themes, but keep coming up with more, and soon you'll have a library of themes Good job you can select the best and the ones you fancy at any given time You are also right about it being good to have more books to choose from . Several years ago, I usually just went to the library ,and back then, they weren't open on Sundays and only a few hours on Saturday. so if you'd end up with a lazy Sunday and nothing to do, you'd want something to read .So, I guess there are good and bad sides to everything . That's like the worst case scenario!! It's much better to have a library of your own, than have to rely to the local library which isn't open 24/7, unlike your private library Also, you know all the books there are and have selected them yourself, and you won't find any sandwhiches between the pages of some mishandled, poor book! Unfortunately, you probably won't find any lost money either... Unless you yourself are in the habit of leaving pound notes in between the pages as bookmarks... Yeah ... you go girl you're doing just fine. Free downloads and library loans don't count as book spending (or hoarding.) I love the title 'If Jack's in Love' .. hope it's as good as it sounds As well as free downloads and library loans, I would say book presents don't count either, or book swaps! (See, if one wants, there are various loop holes here... This could be a very dangerous path to take! ) Quote

I'll have to keep them all in mind . Quote
julie Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 Broadmoor Revealed was a Kindle book about an insane asylum over in England ,told during the beginning years of it ,and mainly telling the history of some of the patients who lived there and some of the men who were in charge . They had chapters on the escapes attempted ,some successful and the person never seen again, but most were captured very quickly . It was an interesting book . I'd give it a 3. It might have gotten higher marks if it would have been more detailed about the men's lives, the patient's lives and why they ended up there ,maybe telling more about their lives before being placed there ,etc . It did go into this a little with each one,but it only seemed to brush the surface. Ok,though ! On to the next .................. Quote
julie Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 (edited) I wanted to post a followup to the previous book, but had to go look up the name of the book on amazon, since I read it awhile ago . http://www.amazon.co...26798240&sr=1-2 This book was so interesting yet so very sad. It was a bout an asylum they had closed and someone who was helping to clean out the place went into the attic and found the suitcases and boxes that the patients had brought with them. It shows pictures of some of the items, then tells a story about the person who left the item. So VERY sad to see what some of the people had brought with them and left ,with no one ever coming back to claim any of it . Very interesting book if you like snooping into someone's attic to see what they keep there . Edited January 17, 2012 by julie Quote

Kylie Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 You could become a rival to Kylie if you buy any more.... Heeey! I can't leave you lot alone for a second! Keep going Julie, you can do it!!!!! I reckon she can too! I think a Kindle would be a very dangerous thing for me! Mind you, I already have thousands of ebooks - I just don't count them as TBR books, thank goodness! Quote

julie Posted January 19, 2012 Author Posted January 19, 2012 Hiya Frankie and Kylie Thanks for dropping in to visit . VF Right between books at the moment . Yesterday was a very bad day to say the least ,and sadly ,reading was nowhere on the agenda . The only good that came from yesterday is that my new Fire arrived . Spent a bit of time with it last night before falling asleep ,but back at it this morning trying to learn how to work all the gadgets. It is one really neat item ! It's back on the Reading Bandwagon today. Gotta choose a new book to start on . Quote
julie Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 Thanks for checking in VF I actually read a book just this evening. A VERY short one at that. It was either a freebie or a dollar bargain one but it was interesting, and I'll count it,even if it is short. I'm not that speedy of a reader sometimes,so every one counts .. Will list it above, then give a quickie review . Quote
julie Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 I jut read Haunted Ground : Ghost Photos from the Battlefield of Gettysburg. It was a VERY short book, and more along the line of a guidebook of sorts, telling about an elderly couple who went to Gettysburg a lot to take photos. They began finding orbs abd mists in the photos taken at particular battlefieldd spots. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, it's a really short book with some neat pictures . I wouldn't pay much for it though, since it is so very short . 2/5 ( got a 2 because I like anthing about the Civil War. As a book ,I'd probably only give it a 1 though ) Quote
Kylie Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 !! I knew you were cheating in some way or another! There's no way you couldn't have NOT bought any books this year. Ha! Well, I don't think I've downloaded any so far this year. So there! Should we have an online petition for Kylie to add her ebooks onto her TBR pile? We stand for truthful disclosure!! Nooooo! Please, don't make me do it! I think I'd rather delete them all than add them to my TBR pile. Quote
