Janet Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Great review of Daughters of Zion:A Family's Conversion to Polygamy, Julie. I read Escape by Carolyn Jessop on the same subject a few years ago - it was fascinating. Quote
julie Posted December 12, 2012 Author Posted December 12, 2012 Thanks Janet It's interesting to learn about these religions and why they think the way they do. It seems to be these splinter groups that are the dangerous ones. They usually have a leader who is One Ant Short of a Picnic. That's really not a safe situation when you have a lunatic making rules for hundreds of people .It usually doesnt end well . I feel so sorry for the ladies and kids in these groups. They get the worst end of things and are treated very poorly . Just not a good situation . I have a couple more books on the subject,so will dig them out one of these days . Quote
julie Posted December 23, 2012 Author Posted December 23, 2012 Book Number 50 !!! I made it to the goal for 2012 The Chronicles of Downton Abbey : A New Era ----Jessica Fellowes, Matthew Sturgis, Julian Fellowes 4/5 I hesitated to read this because I've only seen season 1 & 2 of the show ,and was worried that this book might give away a lot of next season's secrets ,since it has already aired elsewhere . It does kinda give small hints and tells a few things that you sorta knew would probably happen anyhow,so it wasn't too much of a spoiler . This book was comparable to the earlier one I read this year that had many photos of the house and some of the characters, etc . ,but I enjoyed this one much more because it had a lot more detail as to what each person's role in the house would have been ,then gave each main character in the show their own chapter,so it explained a little more about the choices they made and intricate details of their personalities and why they may have said or done the things they did previously . It also tells a lot about the costumes and changes they made in series 3 ,since clothing (especially for women) changed quite a bit after WW 1 ,making clothing a lot looser -fitting and comfortable, but still beautiful and elegant . I'd definitely recommend this if your are a Downton fan ,especially while waiting to buy episodes of season 3. This kinda fills in the gap while waiting . My favorite character in the show is Daisy ,so it's interesting to read more about how her role began in the house, and how she is trying to climb the ladder a bit and have a little more say-so in the kitchen . Anyhow, I enjoyed the book, the pictures are beautiful and it's well worth reading if you want more of Downton Abbey . On to 2013 -- I reached my goal for the year and we only have about a week left of 2012,so it's on to the next list . Quote
pontalba Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 Congratulations Julie!! I saw the new Downton book at the B&N and wondered about it. Thanks for the rec. Quote
julie Posted December 23, 2012 Author Posted December 23, 2012 Thank you kindly Kat --- I wish I would have kept track before of the books I have read each year, but never been that organized ,or possibly just never thought of it . Most of the online groups I've been in before were more discussion - type and really didnt lean heavily on keeping track of how many, but just a specific book in a certain frame of time . It was nice to meet my goal, but I can't help but think I could have gotten a lot higher number 5 or 10 years ago, just because it takes me longer today for things to sink in . Do you think our brains get HARDER as we get older ? Like when you are a kid, your brain is like a sponge and you learn everything quickly , but as you progress in age, I think MY brain has gotten hard like a rock . Quote
