A survival type book

I would love a book where it shows you the growth of the main character (possible a long series?).

 

I would prefer the book to be set in a post-apocalyptic or space. As there are far more challenges in those two genres, I don't think I would want to read about someones growth and struggles in the present day.

 

I want the character to have to over come a lot, survive and thrive.

 

Day by Day Armageddon by J.L. Bourne is a good example. Though zombies don't have to be the thing they're fighting against.
