emelee Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 Anyone read anything by Kafka? I am currently reading "The Trial" (Der Prozeß). I like that there is absurdness in his work. Anything can happen. It tells the story of Josef K. who for some reason unknown even to himself has been arrested and is being prosecuted. He as well as the readers stuggle to find out why he has been arrested. Everything seems so absurd. Another interesting work of his is of course the novella "The Metamorphosis" with its classic opening: As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect-like creature. He was lying on his hard, as it were armor-plated, back and when he lifted his head a little he could see his domelike brown belly divided into stiff arched segments on top of which the bed quilt could hardly keep in position and was about to slide off completely. His numerous legs, which were pitifully thin compared to the rest of his bulk, waved helplessly before his eyes. Quote

I've read both of these (and only these by him so far) I really enjoyed both, but liked The Metamorphosis much more than The Trial.....I struggled a bit with The Trial, but did still enjoy.....the thing about The Trial is it could very well be realistic..... Roland Butter Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 I really enjoyed The Trial, but then my tastes are a bit weird... Quote
Mazzie Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 I've read all short stories written by Franz and I really love his style of writing. Most of the time you don't really know what's going on except the main character's point of view which can be pretty confusing but at the same time just can't stop reading and find out what happens next.
