Weave Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Title of book: Nocturnes Name of author: John Connolly ISBN Number: 0340897333 The blurb: John Connolly, bestselling author of five brilliantly scary mystery novels, now turns his pen to the short story to give us a dozen, chilling tales of the supernatural. In this macabre collection, inspired by masters of the genre from M.R. James to Stephen King, Connolly delves into our darkest fears - lost lovers, missing children, subterranean creatures and predatory demons. Framing the collection are two substantial novellas: The Cancer Cowboy Rides charts the fatal progress of a modern-day grim reaper, while The Reflecting Eye is a haunted house tale with a twist and marks the return of private detecive Charlie Parker, the troubled hero of Connolly's crime novels. 'Nocturnes' is a great collection of horror stories with a twist, from the first story, 'The Cancer Cowboy Rides' you are drawn into a macabre world where anything can happen. My favourite stories were 'The Cancer Cowboy Rides','The New Daughter', 'The Furnace Room', 'Some children wander by mistake' and 'Miss Froom, Vampire'. The best story in the book is actually a novella with the main character, Charlie Parker, from a series of books by the author, I think I will be reading the Charlie Parker books, because he is a great character. If you enjoy a different kind of horror, you will enjoy 'Nocturnes'. Rating: 8/10 Quote
