Childhood book help

Hi,

 

I was wondering if someone could help me. I'm looking for the name of a book I use to read when I was younger. I think I read it in the late 80s early 90s.

 

I think it was called Going Home or Coming Home. It was about a girl from England who went to France on a barge holiday with her family and her stepfather but she didn't like it so she ran away and tried to go home. The story was basically about her trying to get home, but was written, obviously, very 'child-friendly'.

 

Any help would be appreciated as Google has not been my friend with this one!

It's Going Home by K M Peyton (who wrote the Flambards books). No info on Amazon, but there are some second-hand copies available - there's a picture of one cover version here.

Thanks so much for your answer! That is it. It's funny though because the age I read it, I don't remember knowing that the mother was depressed. I have it in my head that she went away with her mother and step father! Innocent childs mind eh!

No problems. I searched in Amazon in 'children's books' and there weren't many results. I clicked this one because I loved the Flambards series and bingo! I hope you enjoy it if you do re-read it.
