help needed

Hi .just come across this forum and wondered if you could help.

In 1974 whilst in hospital I was lent a book which I would like to read again but cannot remember author or title.If I remember correctly it was about a well to do guy who started of in England who traveled and was shipwrecked and ended up living on an island terrorised by wild animals [perhaps wild dogs]. I think he lived with a native girl and had children with her and they became trapped by these animals in a cave and were possibly killed because I think the book then took on a spiritual theme and his spirit appeared at different events in history , one being the evacuation at Dunkirk.

Hope someone can help ,or have I dreamt this book.
