Kidsmum Posted June 5, 2011 Author Posted June 5, 2011 Well I'm not really feeling up to writng reviews on my last couple of books so I'm just going to briefly put my thoughts down. Tamburlaine must Die by Louise Welsh I picked this up at the hospital it's a nice little bit of historical fiction it didn't take me long to read & would be perfect for a long plane journey. 3/5 The Valley of Horses by Jean M. Auel I was really looking forward to reading this as I enjoyed her first book Clan of The Cave Bear so much but I found it a real slog. In fact the book didn't really get going till the last 200 pages when Jondalar & Ayla finally get together before that there just seemed to be endless descriptions of hunting expeditions which I found really boring but having said that I'm glad I stuck it out as the last part of the book was very good & I flew through it. 2/5 Quote
Kidsmum Posted June 11, 2011 Author Posted June 11, 2011 The Grace Ladies of Adieu Susanna Clarke I really enjoyed Susanna Clarke's novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell & like her writing style but this collection of short stories by her was a little disappointing for me. The only story I really enjoyed was Mrs Mabb the rest had quite lame endings & I think short stories need to have strong endings to stick in your mind. 2/5 Quote
Kidsmum Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 I picked up tuesdays with Morrie yesterday & ended up reading it all in one sitting what an amazing guy Morrie was, I think this is one book that will stay with me for a long time. Quote

I picked up tuesdays with Morrie yesterday & ended up reading it all in one sitting what an amazing guy Morrie was, I think this is one book that will stay with me for a long time. Glad you enjoyed this, I haven't read it cos I thought it might be a bit depressing. My dad suffers from cerebellar ataxia which in a lot of ways is similar to motor neuron disease and I didn't think I could cope with reading about someone in a similar situation .. but then again it might be enlightening. I've just started the Clan of The Cave Bear - just a ew pages in but so far so very good. Looking forward to getting stuck in Quote

I know what you mean Poppy but it's not at all depressing Morrie is an amazing guy & I found the book uplifting & inspiring. That's a shame. Looking forward to getting stuck in Glad your enjoying Clan of the Cave Bear Andrea & I'll be interested to hear what you think of Valley of the Horses when you get round to it Quote
Kidsmum Posted July 26, 2011 Author Posted July 26, 2011 I'm reading The Forsythe Saga Volume 2 at the moment but don't seem to be getting very far with it so I'm considering putting it to one side for the moment & picking up something a bit easier to get through. One of my boys has got the Hunger Games Trilogy & seeing as so many people on here have read & enjoyed it I might plump for that Quote
lopeanha Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 YAY for the Hunger Games trilogy All three books are really great and gripping. Quote
Kylie Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 Pinky and the Brain!!! Yay! I love those guys. The whole series recently aired again over here and I diligently recorded every single episode. I haven't watched them all yet so I have a lot of treats ahead of me. It's a brilliant show, isn't it? I second Lopeanha. The Hunger Games trilogy is awesome. Quote

Kidsmum Posted August 6, 2011 Author Posted August 6, 2011 I finished the second book in the Hunger Games Trilogy & have started the third. I'm enjoying the books but must admit to finding Katniss a tad annoying. Quote
Kidsmum Posted August 13, 2011 Author Posted August 13, 2011 I finished Mockingjay the last book in the Hunger Games Trilogy last night, I enjoyed all 3 books they were very exciting, fast paced with good characters but the the first book, Hunger Games, was my favourite. I've decided to stick with childrens literature & have gone for an old favourite for my next read The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper. Quote

Kidsmum Posted August 19, 2011 Author Posted August 19, 2011 Hi Kidsmum are the Hunger Games books children's literature too then? More suitable for over twelves I think, younger children might find some of the content a bit upsetting but I suppose it depends on the individual child. Were you thinking of getting them for one of your children ? Quote

Kidsmum Posted August 27, 2011 Author Posted August 27, 2011 Great choice of books in general - we're big Rose Elliot fans in our house, you'll find some very tasty recipes in there! I was drooling as I was reading the book, there are some I'll be able to try straight away but I'm still very limited in what I can eat at the moment, things like tomatoes are a big no-no. Do you have any stand out favourite recipes from her book ? Quote
Kidsmum Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 Went to visit my Dad today & was irresistably drawn into my favourite charity shop, I came out with A Slice of Organic Life Sheherazade Goldsmith - a great reference book & for 99p an absolute bargain Lake Wobegon Days Garrison Keillor An Echo in the Bone Diana Gabaldon - I hadn't realised that this was the 7th book in a series so now I'm going to have to get the earlier ones & read those first Amsterdam Ian McEwan Rebecca Daphne du Maurier - Can't wait to read this one again Sharpe's Regiment - another one to add to the collection Quote
Kidsmum Posted August 31, 2011 Author Posted August 31, 2011 Dark is Rising Sequence Susan Cooper This is a wonderful series of books, a childrens adventure which has everything in it, a quest, magic , good & evil. If I could choose one book to step into & live the story it would be this one, how it hasn't been made into a major movie I don't know. 5/5 Girl Meets Boy Ali Smith This is a lovely book, reviewed so much better by other people than me so I'll just say that it's very original there were lots of lines in it that made me stop & think & I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. It's not a book I would have chosen had I not read about on here so thanks to Chrissy & Claire for singing it's praises 5/5 Quote
chesilbeach Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 You don't know how happy it makes me that you enjoyed Girl Meets Boy, Kidsmum. I almost bought a second copy for myself the other day from a second hand stall just so I could lend it out to others without worrying, but unfortunately I was on my out for the evening and didn't have a bag with me to carry it in. I'm sure if I see it again, I'll get it though. I've read the first two books in the Dark Is Rising series, and I'm going to put the rest on my Christmas wishlist, as I think they'll be perfectly suited for snuggling up in a cosy arm chair in front of the fire Quote
