Kidsmum Posted December 29, 2010 Author Posted December 29, 2010 Looks cool so far. Just how big is your TBR pile? I'm not sure anymore to be honest I don't dare count them. We bought more bookshelves a few months ago & I've already filled those & I'm back to stacking the books on top & behind the ones on the shelves, my hubby's really good & doesn't moan about it probably because he's just as bad with CDs Quote

frankie Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Oh definitely not thousands, I'm sure my TBR pile is a mere hillock next to some peoples mountains Well, if you are anything like the rest of us, being on this forum will have a deep impact on you and your TBR will only grow and grow... soon you'll be needing to rent an apartment for your newly acquired books Quote
Kidsmum Posted January 11, 2011 Author Posted January 11, 2011 Well, if you are anything like the rest of us, being on this forum will have a deep impact on you and your TBR will only grow and grow... soon you'll be needing to rent an apartment for your newly acquired books . Maybe if I win the lottery I can have a house built with a library for my own personal collection, I can but dream I've decided to add the books that I buy this year to my reading list so that I can keep track of what I've got. I wanted something simple and not scary! Looking at a few of the list that others (you know who you are!) had created made my mojo very nervous. Quote
Kidsmum Posted January 18, 2011 Author Posted January 18, 2011 I've just updated my books bought in 2011 list & I'm already wondering if it was a good idea to start a list as I feel guilty when I can see them all there in black & white Quote
poppyshake Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Lot's of great classics on your list, I must read more classics this year .. I remember loving 'the Mayor of Casterbridge' ... though it's due for a re-read I think (as it's all got mixed up in my head.) .. I cried buckets over it as I recall. Hope you enjoy your 2011 reading Quote

I remember loving 'the Mayor of Casterbridge' ... though it's due for a re-read I think (as it's all got mixed up in my head.) .. I cried buckets over it as I recall. Hope you enjoy your 2011 reading Thanks Poppy, all the classics I bought are going to be re- reads & I agree The Mayor of Casterbridge is a great book , I've also seen a couple of TV adaptations which I enjoyed as well. Don't feel guilty just pick one and start reading.... Just checked your list and I haven't read any of those..what is Slap about? Slap is about one afternoon at a suburban barbecue where a man slaps a three year old boy who is not his son & how that single incident is seen through the eyes of eight of the people who witness it. I picked it up in a charity shop & thought it sounded really interesting but it doesn't get great reviews on Amazon but heigh ho it was only 50p Quote
Kylie Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Slap is about one afternoon at a suburban barbecue where a man slaps a three year old boy who is not his son & how that single incident is seen through the eyes of eight of the people who witness it. I picked it up in a charity shop & thought it sounded really interesting but it doesn't get great reviews on Amazon but heigh ho it was only 50p That's interesting, because it's a critically acclaimed book here in Australia. It's currently being made into a mini-series to be shown on TV this year. Quote
Kidsmum Posted January 20, 2011 Author Posted January 20, 2011 Oh good , that's renewed my faith in it, it did sound good when I read the back cover. I don't always check out books I buy on Amazon because if they get the thumbs down it does put me off & they go to the bottom of the TBR heap, I guess I'm easily influenced by what other people say Quote
Janet Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 I have The Slap on my to-read pile. It was chosen as a Book Club read, but the lady who chose it (who hadn't read it when she picked it) rang me and said she was worried about the language upsetting our one 60-something member, and despite me saying I didn't think she'd mind (I know my Mum wouldn't be offended by it, although she'd probably prefer it not to be so prolific) the host changed the book so I haven't read it yet. The three club members who had also read it thought it was great though. Quote
frankie Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 When I was in Australia I saw copies of The Slap everywhere and Kylie told me that it's won some prizes and it's well-liked, and I just had to add it to my wishlist. I didn't actually know what it was about, but what you, Kidsmum, told us about the book was really interesting and now I want it even more Quote
Kidsmum Posted January 21, 2011 Author Posted January 21, 2011 Thanks guys , I'll tell you what I think of it when I get round to reading it Quote
Kidsmum Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 The Forsyte Saga Volume 1 John Galsworthy Amazon Synopsis The Forsyte Saga is the first part of John Galsworthy's; magnificent, well-loved Forsyte Chronicles, which trace the changing fortunes of the wealthy Forsyte dynasty through fifty years of material triumph and emotional disaster. The Forsyte Saga begins as the nineteenth century is drawing to a close, and the upper middle classes, with their property and propriety, are becoming a dying section of society. The Forsytes are blind to this fact, clinging to their conventions and respectability ;. As dignified Soames Forsyte struggles to uphold the old moral code in the face of the social revolution resulting from the Great War, his wife Irene's extraordinary beauty causes even more disruption. The bitter feud between them comes to split the Forsyte family for two generations. Review I nearly gave up on this book at the start as I really struggled to remember who was who & how they fitted into the Forsyte family, there is a family tree at the start of the book but it does give away later storylines if you look too closely so ultimately it wasn't that helpful. However I'm so glad I persevered as this is a fantastic book, it's like a literary version of reality TV as you get to share the characters most intimate moments but better than TV because you get to see into their hearts & minds as well & see what makes them who they are warts & all & Galsworthy does this so well that there were parts of the book that made me cry I became so caught up in their lives. I would recommend this book if you enjoy family saga's & I'll definitely be buying the next two volumes. 5/5 Quote
Kidsmum Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 On Chesil Beach Ian McEwan Waterstones Synopsis It is June 1962. In a hotel on the Dorset coast, overlooking Chesil Beach, Edward and Florence, who got married that morning, are sitting down to dinner in their room. Neither is entirely able to suppress their anxieties about the wedding night to come...On Chesil Beach is another masterwork from Ian McEwan. Review This is a lovely little book , the story is so sensitive & intimate that I found it a very emotional read. Edward & Florence are wonderful characters, very innocent compared to modern day standards which made them utterly endearing. There were parts of this book where I found myself holding my breath hoping for the best & yet fearing the worst. My only complaint would be that the book was too short, I would have liked to have found out more about how their lives turned out afterwards especially Florence. 4/5 Quote
