Yes, but only a couple of friends in 'real life'. Mostly I discuss them with my friends on BCF. 15. Do you borrow books from the library? No. 16. Do you borrow/loan books from/to friends? Kell
1. Age (<18, 18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55+) 25-34 2. Gender Female 3. What do you read on a daily basis? (blogs, newspapers, books, etc.) Books. Although I occasionally catch up on a few blogs and I buy cross stitch magazines once a month. 4. How often do you read for fun in a week? Every day 5. What time of day do you like to read? Usually in bed, but I also have books in a) the bathroom (for when I'm in the tub); b) the kitchen (for when I'm stirring stuff on the stove); c) my bag (for when I'm on the go). I therefore always have at least 4 books on the go, although it can sometimes take me a while to finish them. 6. Where do you read? Anywhere I get a chance! 7. How many books have you read in the last 6 months? 27 in the last 6 months. 36 this year so far (I'm aiming for 52 and am a few books ahead of the game at the moment). 8. What type/genre do you enjoy reading most? I have very eclectic tastes and love pretty much anything from classic to contemporary, historical fiction to horror, crime to supernatural thriller. The only genre I don't really "do" at all is pulp romance (I.e. Mills and Boon type stuff). I don't mind an element of romance, so long as that's not the whole point of the story - I like other elements too. 9. Why do you read? (entertainment, relaxation, learning, etc.) 99% entertainment/relaxation, 1% learning. I used to read a lot more non-fiction and text books, but nowadays I'm almost exclusively a fiction reader. That's not to say the balance won't shift at some point in the future though. 10. What barriers prevent you from reading more? Lack of time, as I have other hobbies to squeeze into my very limited free time too. 11. Do you think reading for fun is important? Yes, very. At least, it is for me! 12. Do you fold page corners or use a bookmark? I'd NEVER turn the corners! I always, always, ALWAYS slip something into the book to mark my place. I have a whole host of beautiful bookmarks, mostly ones I've made myself. Some stitched, some paper craft. I'm not above using bus tickets or any little slip of paper when in a pinch though, and I love those moveable sticky flag things too as you can place them exactly where you're up to on the page and they don't fall out when they're being carted around in my bag. 13. Do you prefer to read to music or in silence? Doesn't bother me either way. When I'm reading, the rest of the world tends to get tuned out anyway. 14. Do you discuss books with your friends? Yes - all the time! 15. Do you borrow books from the library? Nowhere near as much as I used to. In fact, I don't think I've borrowed a library book in a couple of years now, mostly because I have so many unread books of my own waiting to be read. At one point, I lived not 50 feet from a library and was in there every other day borrowing books. The librarians knew me and my tastes so well that they would keep books aside for me because they knew I'd be in either that day or the next - LOL! 16. Do you borrow/loan books from/to friends? I only loan to a very specific few friends as I've had such a tragic record of losing books or having them returned terribly damaged. When I borrow them from other people, they are returned to their owner as soon as possible and in exactly the same state in which they were loaned to me. If anything did happen to a book temporarily in my care, I would feel obliged to replace it immediately.
Echo
1. Age (<18, 18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55+) 25-34 (30) 2. Gender Female 3. What do you read on a daily basis? (blogs, newspapers, books, etc.) Blogs, online news articles, magazines, manga/comics 4. How often do you read for fun in a week? Every day 5. What time of day do you like to read? Any time! But I mostly read books at night before I go to sleep. 6. Where do you read? If I'm settling down to read a book, I usually sit on the couch with a drink near me, or lay in bed. 7. How many books have you read in the last 6 months? I haven't kept track, but probably around 5 or 6. 8. What type/genre do you enjoy reading most? Fiction, especially horror/suspense, magical realism, fantasy, and classics. 9. Why do you read? (entertainment, relaxation, learning, etc.) All of the above! But especially for relaxation and learning. 10. What barriers prevent you from reading more? I suffer from depression, which affects my motivation and concentration. Also, I'm in school, which takes up a lot of my time. 11. Do you think reading for fun is important? Both! Reading is much more stimulating than watching TV. It involves a person's imagination, their level of comprehension, and can introduce people to new ideas. 12. Do you fold page corners or use a bookmark? I always use a bookmark! I used to fold the page corners, but I can't bring myself to do that anymore. 13. Do you prefer to read to music or in silence? It depends on the kind of music, but usually in silence. 14. Do you discuss books with your friends? Yes! I have so many friends here on BCF with whom I love discussing books! I also have other friends and family members who like discussing books with me. 15. Do you borrow books from the library? No. I should, though. 16. Do you borrow/loan books from/to friends? Yes. I exchange books a lot with my older brother. He's always urging me to read books that he's enjoyed since we like a lot of the same kind of books. Thank you very much! You're welcome! Nollaig
1. Age (<18, 18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55+) 18-24 2. Gender Female 3. What do you read on a daily basis? (blogs, newspapers, books, etc.) Books, almost exclusively. 4. How often do you read for fun in a week? I never read for anything but fun, and it varies, but I'd say on average I'll pick up a book everyday, even if only to read a few pages. 5. What time of day do you like to read? Makes no odds to me. Whenever I'm in the mood, it varies. 6. Where do you read? Anywhere quiet. Usually in my living room or bedroom. 7. How many books have you read in the last 6 months? 24. Currently reading my 25th and 26th, and have read a total of 32 so far this year. 8. What type/genre do you enjoy reading most? Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Horror. 9. Why do you read? (entertainment, relaxation, learning, etc.) All of the above. Definitely for relaxation, it's also entertaining. They're the primary reasons, but I do also read topical books to learn about things. I find that fun too, though... 10. What barriers prevent you from reading more? My fickle reading-mojo. Sometimes, much as I want to, I just can't concentrate. 11. Do you think reading for fun is important? Well, only in the sense than fun is necessary to unwind. I certainly couldn't live without my books for entertainment. 12. Do you fold page corners or use a bookmark? Use a bookmark, I'd never fold pages. 13. Do you prefer to read to music or in silence? I need silence to concentrate, or at least very low levels of non-vocal noise. 14. Do you discuss books with your friends? None of my friends read much, which is why I'm so forum-orientated. 15. Do you borrow books from the library? Nope, because when I read a book and like it, I want to keep it, but if I've read a book, I won't buy it no matter how much I like it, and I hate being in that situation. 16. Do you borrow/loan books from/to friends? Nope, because the only times I ever have I've either not gotten them back or gotten them back damaged. I don't trust people with them. BookJumper
1. Age 25-34 2. Gender Female. 3. What do you read on a daily basis? Books, and the newspaper if there's one free on the bus. 4. How often do you read for fun in a week? I try to everyday, even if it's just a paragraph 5. What time of day do you like to read? Evening, which is ironic because I never have the time or strength to read in the evening these days. 6. Where do you read? On buses and in coffeeshops, though I'd prefer to be able to read in bed with a cuppa or in a frothy bath. 7. How many books have you read in the last 6 months? To its end, one, but to be fair I do have eight currently on the go - I'm a book polygamist. 8. What type/genre do you enjoy reading most? Speculative Fiction (Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction and all things in between). 9. Why do you read? To escape from problems while learning almost effortlessly about the way other human beings think and feel. 10. What barriers prevent you from reading more? Stress and the consequent lack of time / concentration. 11. Do you think reading for fun is important? Vital. I personally would never have survived the solitude of school without books. 12. As a slightly older collector, it's bookmark or death in my, haha, book. 13. Do you prefer to read to music or in silence? Silence, thank you. I find sounds impossible to ignore. 14. Do you discuss books with your friends? 90+% of my friends are my friends because they read books. 15. Do you borrow books from the library? I used to when, again, I was small and poor. Nowadays I always buy before I read; I form an emotional connection to specific reading copies, hence I don't like giving books back. 16. Do you borrow/loan books from/to friends? I try not to borrow, and when I do I warn the owner they might never see the book again. I can count on the fingers of one hand the people I'd lend books to, and trust to give them back in more or less the same condition I loaned them out in. In the last couple of months very usual , I would dare to say, about 2 hours each day in a week . 5. What time of day do you like to read? Since I oversleep the day, the night sounds perfect for me 6. Where do you read? When I'm on holiday I use my room for reading , but when I'm in the middle of "school year" sometimes I spend my time in the library . 7. How many books have you read in the last 6 months? Dunno exactly the number of read books , but lets say, about 25 of them . 8. What type/genre do you enjoy reading most? Horror, thriller, sometimes drama makes me feel great .... But generally it depends on my mood . Although horror is the genre I can read always . 9. Why do you read? (entertainment, relaxation, learning, etc.) Because of myself would be the most appropriate answer . That includes entertainment, relaxation, learning ... 10. What barriers prevent you from reading more? I think I found books interesting very late . I think I should have started to like books many years ago, but here I'm now and giving my best to improve ME as a person at all . And I had a barrier I'd call, lack of bookworms in my environment which I honestly don't have anymore , not because I found these kind of people but because I learned to love the book no matter who I'm surrounded with . I just didn't have many persons who could show me to like the book . I learned it on my own, and I like it . Now , I don't have any other barriers except lack of time . 11. Do you think reading for fun is important? Of course it is . Even if we read for fun we can learn plenty of things from these kind of books . 12. Do you fold page corners or use a bookmark? Neither of them . 13. Do you prefer to read to music or in silence? In silence . 14. Do you discuss books with your friends? Nope , not at all . (blogs, newspapers, books, etc.) Yes, I try to. Books, newspaper articles online, journal articles for uni, trashy celeb magazines. 4. How often do you read for fun in a week? Try everyday but probably 2-3 times a week 5. What time of day do you like to read? Night-time, usually around 8 when I'm in the bath or in bed. 6. Where do you read? In the bath mostly, or in bed before sleep. 7. How many books have you read in the last 6 months? 34 8. What type/genre do you enjoy reading most? I couldn't choose just one-supernatural, mystery, thriller, chick-lit. 9. Why do you read? (entertainment, relaxation, learning, etc.) Entertainment mostly, learning for my uni stuff 10. What barriers prevent you from reading more? Not having enough time! 11. Do you think reading for fun is important? Yes, it's better to read for fun than being forced to read something (such as for uni/school where there is essential reading). I like having a choice in what I read. 12. Do you fold page corners or use a bookmark? Bookmark...I would NEVER fold the pages. 13. Do you prefer to read to music or in silence? Silence, I prefer complete silence! 14. Do you discuss books with your friends? Yes, mostly online (mainly this forum). 15. Do you borrow books from the library? Only for uni, I'm not a member of a library (although I keep meaning to). 16. Do you borrow/loan books from/to friends? I borrow from my family sometimes but I try not to lend books because I get a bit OCD to keep the books in perfect condition. There's been times when I've loaned books out and got them back with the covers bent or the spines broken so now I just don't do it.

TheNinthWord
What a shame that yet again someone appears to have posted a few times, asked us for help with something, and hasn't posted since. Can I ask how you're getting on with your article, and if you will be sharing it with us? I'm very sorry about that! I've been a bit busy the past few weeks with other things, and this forum has fallen down my list of priorities a bit. I've also been trying to get more data from other sources. Naturally people who visit a forum like this will read more than the general public, so I'm trying to get a more average set of data before I start work on my article. Be sure that I'll let you know when I've written it, and what I've discovered!
