I am just curious if you know Jim Button by Michael Ende. The little Jim and his friend Luke the Engine Driver are very famous in Germany. Almost every child knew them. I myself love him but must admit, I don't really know the books about Jim but the television version from the Augsburger Puppenkiste (which is a famous marionette theatre).

If you wonder why I ask now: Well, tomorrow is a big day for Jim, it's his 50th birthday!
