Cutting Edge Children's books

Hello - I am wondering if anyone can recommend any new children's books that aren't necessarily stories, but are educational and enlightening and suitable for up to 12 yr olds. I thought that since there are so many great people using the forum that it would be interesting to see what people can think of that I am unable to find!?

I can't help but get a 'marketing research' vibe about your post, arewenearlythere - as indeed I do about most of your posts, which tend to be vague prompts for quotable opinions as opposed to genuine discussions about books. This is a question you've already asked before in many ever-so-slightly different guises, so we would be grateful if you could refrain from asking it again.
