I got given a lovely 50th anniversary hardback edition of this for Christmas a few years ago. I agree with you, Janet, that it does feel a little bit dated, and I suspect it actually appeals more to the older reader now rather than the original 10-14 year old, but also like you, I would heartily recommend it to everyone here (knowing what discerning readers we all are :D)

The minute I read the name it rang a bell might have to dig it out I might have read it in school. Did he write anything else?

I have it for my English reading and I find it quite good. I think my favorite character is Jan because he likes pets, and second is Bistro the monkey because I think he is funny - having a passion for cigarettes. :readingtwo:
