Roald Dahl Books... What Age?

I Loved Roald Dahl books when i was a wee nipper and i can't wait to read them to Emmy but there seem to be mixed views on what ages the books are appropriate. I remember having audio tapes too and i'm sure i was real young but i can't remember really. So what do you all think or can you remember how young you were when you were reading RD?

My daughter really enjoyed when she was about 9-10.

cool thanks... i'm definitely hoping to read them to her sooner than that, i guess i will have to just see how it goes. can't wait to read her Harry Potter either but i suppose its a matter of whether or not she'll let me more than anything else haha!

I'm sure I remember my favourite teacher reading us James and the Giant Peach, and she was my teacher from when I was 7 until I was 9, and I think I'd already read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by then.

I think I was about 7 or 8 when I was reading things like George's Marvellous Medicine, The Twits, James and the Giant Peach, and The BFG. The Twits is still my favourite.

I remember the Magic Finger at about 6-7 but there is also some for younger children like the Enormous Crocodile I loved that one

I read James and the Giant Peach, The Twits and Matilda when I was in school, probably aged about 7 or 8.

I started reading them on my own about 7 or 8. But if you are reading them to a child I'm not sure it actually matters what age you start.

 

The sentences flow and are fairly short, the characters are distinctive so lend themselves to their own voice and the stories are great enough to keep any adult engaged (just remember when they start to snore you should stop).

 

Content can't be an issue if you compare them to the fairy tales.

 

So I say go for it now
