I just finished reading Frankenstein on my Sony Reader.

On page 168 the main character reaches a harbour at a

[Kell]

If I remember correctly, the name is purposely missing - it was written that way.

It's the same with a lot of older literature, though the reason why has always remained a mystery. Austen frequently refers to "-shire" instead of actual full county names. I think the same sort of omittence occurs in Jane Eyre once or twice as well.
