Guest colaroid Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I just did a search for the Red Dwarf Omnibus and there is nothing in here on it so I thought I would give it a mention. Before you are put off this is not a sci fi book although it is set in space. It is a sit com about the last human being, felis sapiens (a man evolved from a cat), a mechanoid and a hologram. If you have seen the tv series you get the general idea but the book is so much better than the tv series. It is the only book I have ever read that makes me laugh out loud and everyone I have forced to read it is the same. Lister is a human that was trapped on a planet called Mimas (one of saturns moons) after he did a monopoly board pub crawl in london and woke up in a dress and fishing waders with a passport for a woman called Emily. He tries to get away from Mimas by signing up to become a a third technician on Red Dwarf where he meets up with Rimmer his bunk mate, a neurotic and unsuccessful first technician who wipes out the entire crew apart from Lister via a radiation leak. Holly, the ships computer sends the ship into deep space and keeps lister in suspended animation until the radiation reaches an acceptable level at which point Lister is the sole surviving member of the human race and his cat has evolved into felis sapiens, a race that invented the hairdryer before the wheel. The book follows their attempts to get back to Earth and is very worth a read. I cannot recommend it enough! I will add that this is my favourite book with Pride and Prejudice as my second favourite-it is not in any way a book only for sci fi readers. Although I am sure they would love it too! Quote
Chrissy Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Hello colaroid, and welcome to the forum. I enjoyed the TV series of 'Red Dwarf', but had not thought to seek out a book on it. Having seen the series first, will this help or hinder reading it? Quote

Now I'm off to find a better forum bye. Quote

Now I'm off to find a better forum bye. I read a few of the books many a year ago, it was one of the rare occasions that a book made me LOL. I would reccomend them if you've seen the show or not (I'd also reccomend checking out the show). RE: the bold comment, you get out what you put in.. Quote

Michelle Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 (edited) Wow - are you always that rude to people?! Please DO stay away! Added: due to this rudeness, plus an unpleasant email to myself, this person has been banned. Edited October 21, 2009 by Michelle Quote
Janet Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Good riddance, I say. We have enough lovely members who want to discuss books - we can well do without this one. Quote
Stephanie2008 Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Awwww I missed all the fun!! What's going on, he didn't seem like a cheery chap! Quote
Nollaig Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I like 'speaking to' these sorts of people. Bit like banning spammers, it's a guilty pleasure Quote

Nollaig Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 That's like eating fat-free food. The substance just isn't there Quote
Kell Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Can we now leave the thread to discuss the book rather than the person who was banned, please? Otherwise the thread will be removed. Thank you. Quote
MuggleMagic Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Somebody was obviously bored Dear-oh-dear! Also, this is the best reading forum I have found. I have found all others slightly stuffy, snobby and I haven't felt comfortable in them *hugs forum* Quote
