Michelle Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 A strange novel for strange young people. Young Samuel Johnson and his dachshund Boswell are trying to show initiative by trick-or-treating a full three days before Hallowe Quote
BookJumper Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 Sounds very Good-Omenish, which is of course a good thing will definitely pick this up! Quote
Weave Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 Sounds a great read Michelle, I enjoyed your review, I have added it to my wishlist Quote
BookJumper Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 On my way to meet Dacre Stoker at Waterstone's Piccadilly tonight I discovered that John Connolly will be there on Thursday to talk about & sign copies of The Gates, so I thought I might as well and bought me a ticket looks like I'll be picking this up sooner than expected! Fi. Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Great review Michelle! I pre-ordered this a while ago and really looking forward to reading it Quote
Nollaig Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 (edited) Just finished this a couple days ago. I haven't written a review yet coz I'm flying through Dracula atm. General thoughts: It's like Robert Rankin meets Neil Gaiman. That sarcastic, pedantic and rather adult sense of humor which in this particular case of science and hell, will appeal very much to intellectuals. It made me laugh out loud on several occasions*, and every single chapter has something worth quoting. (The picture of Einstein - HILARIOUS!) Additionally, there were some really lovely gems in there (like the bit about atoms never changing but constantly being recycled, so a little bit of us all once ruled Rome (Caesar) and a little bit of us all once sang 'Blue Suede Shoes'. Lovely stuff. Character-wise, I didn't HUGELY warm to anyone, but I certainly didn't dislike them either (unless they were Mrs. Abernathy - also must say, TOTALLY did not see her coming in the end!) I really liked Nurd, but felt he wasn't in it enough, despite turning out to be a key character. All in all, I loved it, couldn't get enough of the humor and physics (a space truck, obviously). I'm going to re-read it A.S.A.P just to track down all the quotes. Only real downside: I wouldn't say it was too short, as it moved at a great pace but never felt rushed - 'short' suited the actual story as it turned out. But I do like longer books, and like Michelle, I could happily have kept reading forever! Edited October 12, 2009 by Nollaig *I originally typed 'equations' here, LOL! Quote
