E-Books

Admin note: It's often difficult to know whether sites offering free ebooks are legal or not, as there are many issues around copyright. I would ask that people only post links to sites that are known to be 100% genuine, only offering books out of copyright. In addition, this is a spammer's dream thread, so if a new member comes and posts in here, I'm afraid it will be removed.

Librivox only does classics that are out of copyright, but they're read by regular punters rather than professionals, so it can be a little hit and miss, as you get some books read by several different people and some aren't as good as others, but when you find a good one, it's great (there's a guy called Chip who did The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and parts of Fanny Hill and he is fantastic!).

ETA - Sorry, I completely misread and posted about audio books - LOL!

There are many people out there who either own sites linking to illegal ebooks, commercial ebook sites, or those covered in advertising.. therefore making them money. They will be searching for threads like this, and will happily use it to promote these sites.

When I don't find books in the library or I am too curious to wait weeks or months before I can receive them, I also read them online.

There are many sites. But you won't find many contemporary books online as far as I know, due to copyright issues.

Here are another few links:

I know this is an old thread but:

I've just joined a library in the UK so can now borrow eBooks from the county, you may have similar options.

It's not massively stocked but they are free.

317 non fiction, 474 fiction. Some specific categories include (47 Sci-Fi, 6 horror, 77 computer, 125 mystery & thriller, 22 travel)

Grabit thanks for the Baen books link, I'd come across it before but completely forgot about it. I liked the idea that it seems to be for new or less well known authors.

Gutenberg Australia also has ebooks (out of copyright) which are more culturally specific to the region. There are also authors who give free copies of some texts from their blogs and / or websites, so it is a good idea to look at them from time to time.

I think Google Books have a few. I know there are some you have to pay for but I found Alice adventures in Wonderland for free. I never read all the way through though because I have a hard time with reading anything on screen.
