"Reasons cited include the religious viewpoints expressed in the books and their sexually explicit nature" - well that can't be true about Twilight :tong:

I think there's a snobbery about books such as these. People think that they're rubbish and that others shouldn't be reading them, however, it's also one of the most popular book series out there. Each to their own.

Twilight is one of the most complained about books....I'm surprised

Read about this too today, and some of the other books on this list. Haven't read Twilight so can't judge, but seems to me, it's a very.. proper book, as in, very much not sexually explicit etc. Ah well, wouldn't mind knowing where most complaints come from. It's the US, so what, the Bible belt? (no offence to anyone living there or being very religious.. )

Also, disturbed me that a lot of these most challenged books have as a theme homosexuality. What, that's disturbing, or are they worrying kids might "catch" it? I mean, seriously. :D:tong:

Just seen that they finally have the Breaking Dawn paperback up for pre-order, seems it's going to be released August 3rd :tong: Can't wait, the hardback is so bulky, it'll be nice to have it in paperback!

Thank goodness for that! I can't fit the hardback in my bag, I'll be so glad to get a paperback copy. Why has it taken so long???? Having said that, I'll wait until I see it before I believe it - there was a paperback edition on pre-order last year, and then it disappeared :tong:

Oh finally! thanks for the info Lexie, and Chesil, I hear ya, I pre~ordered (well tried to) the paperback last year and nothing! :tong:

I'm not sure why it was there before and then disappeared, very strange, maybe they were trying to get as much money as poss out of people buying the hardback? Because they do love to milk the money when it comes to the Twilight brand, but it seems it will be released in multiple countries on Aug 3rd so fingers crossed that will stop it falling through here!

The delay in paperback release was probably due to money. It was on the best seller list for so long, and we all know the longer it does well the longer it takes to become paperback. Too bad BD was my least fave of the series :tong:. I'm looking forward to the Host coming in PB though, since I've yet to read that one.

As far as I know The Host is already in PB, atleast it has been for here and for quite a while too, I bought it ages ago and I have it in PB

It must've been delayed here for some reason, Lexie, which would be weird, but I swear I just started seeing it advertised! Although I have been wandering around in a New Moon haze since last November so maybe I just missed it :tong:.

I suspect The Host was delayed in the US for monetary reasons as well. I did read on Stephenie's website that it's got a never-before-published 'bonus chapter' so although they've made money out of the hardback, they now want to get you to buy the paperback as well, just so you can get the extra chapter. I hate it when they do that. :tong: (Having said that, I didn't think The Host was great, so I won't be buying it anyway, it just annoys me that they try to eek every last penny out of us).

I know that really annoys me too, it takes the mickey really because after all, we do buy the books and films, go to see them at the cinema, and it's almost like we're being punished for liking it, surely they would want to reward fans?! :D

I bought 'The Host' in paperback this week, I have it in hardback but it was too heavy for my bag :D

I'm not a jewellery person, and wear no rings, bracelets, necklaces or even a watch, so I thought it was just me who thought it was awful! Surely it's supposed to be his mothers engagement ring, and it would have been more tasteful than that in the 19th century?

That is definitely not an engagement/wedding ring! Its a gaudy cocktail ring that looks like it came out of one of those 25 cent plastic egg machines in the supermarket.

Title: The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

Author: Stephenie Meyer

Publisher: Atom

Rating: 3/5

Synopsis (from book cover):

I watched his body change. He crouched on the roof, one had gripping the edge. All that strange friendliness disappeared, and he was a hunter. That was something I recognized, something I was comfortable with because I understood it.

I turned off my brain. It was time to hunt. I took a deep breath, drawing in the scent of the blood inside the humans below. They weren't the only humans around, but they were the closest. Who you were going to hunt was the kind of decision you had to make before you scented your prey.

It was too late to choose anything.

Review:

We first met Bree Tanner for a brief moment at the end of the Stephenie Meyer's Eclipse[/i] but she was obviously an important character to the author, as she had a whole back story worked out for her, which she has now written up in this novella.

I thought it might be a while before I got to read another installment in the Twilight saga (I'm still holding out for the completion of Midnight Sun), and to be honest, I'd convinced myself I wasn't that bothered by this new story as it wasn't about our beloved Bella, Edward and Jacob, but couldn't resist the lure of an especially early opening of Waterstone's on publication date.

At 178 pages, it's a quick, easy read, and it does feel like returning home after holiday - you've had a great time away reading other things, but it's lovely to be back with the your own creature comforts. From what I've seen of what's coming in the Eclipse film, I'm guessing Meyer gave this material to the filmmakers, and it rounds out the story nicely.

The story concentrates more on Bree discovering the secrets Riley is keeping from his group of newborns. I enjoyed it, and I loved the characters of Diego and Fred. When the story starts, Bree has already been a vampire for a few months, but personally, I would have liked to see Meyer start the story in Bree's last day as a human, or in the first few days as a vampire.

Interestingly, Waterstone's had opened an hour early for the book release and I was expecting to find crowds of teenagers at the bookshop, but it was a very quiet store that I walked into. In fact, the display of books was still pretty full, and I had the whole shop to myself. I didn't actually arrive until about 8:45am, so perhaps i'd missed them!

Synopsis:

Fans of The Twilight Saga will be enthralled by this riveting story of Bree Tanner, a character first introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the newborn vampire world she inhabits. In another irresistible combination of danger, mystery, and romance, Stephenie Meyer tells the devastating story of Bree and the newborn army as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion.

I love the Twilight Saga and therefore I was excited and sceptical about this novella. This story follows Bree, a girl we meet at the end of Eclipse as she is prepared to go into battle against the Cullens. This means that we don't see Edward, Bella and co. until the end of this story. Is that a problem? At first yes, but once I adjusted to that fact even though this is Twilight we wouldn't read about the original characters the story picked up. This novel is more gory than the others. We do read about the odd blood bath, which we don't get with the Cullens. That surprised me but didn't put me off the book.

I found myself liking Bree. Riley, her coven's leader was trying to keep the new vampires stupid and away from Victoria, but Bree, even though a newborn was intelligent. She kept herself hidden in the coven's hideout and was able to see the truth in the situation. I liked Fred as well. He was also in the coven, but he had powers which meant he could repel others and make himself invisible. He protected Bree and I liked reading about the way he made people gag if they got too close - that made me laugh!

I can't say I'm a fan of the ending - although having read Eclipse I did know what was going to happen to Bree. I did love meeting the Cullens and Bella though. The first sighting we get of them is with Carlisle, and he is showing compassion, which reminded me why I love his character!

I read this in a day and did enjoy it. I can't say I was gripped like I was with the other novels in the Twilight saga but I do recommend it to Twilight fans. The effect of the book is I now want to re-read all the Twilight books and I cannot wait for the film. It has ignited my Twilight spark but I would have preferred a novel about one of the main characters. I'm still hoping Meyer will finish writing Midnight Sun. I think I would have enjoyed a novel about the Cullens or Jacob more, but this is still a good read.

Have to agree with you there thoroughly, it wasn't anywhere near as compelling as the Saga itself, in fact I was quite let down! I enjoyed it (how could I not with Meyer's fantastic writing style) however, I was expecting too much, I guess.

(Pre-ordered paper-back Breaking Dawn today though, that'll be good, I hate hardbacks!)

Mitch.
