Mac Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Hi there. Just wanted to see if anyone has read Holes and, if they have, what they thought of it. A bunch of kids I was teaching were reading and raving about it, I was curious and picked it up. Couldn't put it down. Fast paced, witty, with endearing characters, I thought it was a cracking good book. Funnily enough, I watched the film shortly afterwards and really enjoyed that too. It stars an even younger Shia LeBouef whom I had never seen before and thought, 'Blimey, this guys going to have a brilliant career!' Transformers, anyone? You might have to switch the brain off, but, by God, it's a blinder of a good, fun action movie! I digress. I'll stop here. Quote
Mac Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 Dammit, no! I can't remember for toffee, and I had to give the book back to the school I 'borrowed' it from. Wish I knew. Can anyone help? Sorry Roxi. I can be really annoying! Quote
Polly Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Ooo I read this book for a challenge (I did the reading challenge between local schools for three years, we had to stop after three because its our exam time.) I really enjoyed the book, at the start I found it a little dry but when I got into it I found that it was excellent. I would reccomend it to anyone its a very nice read. Quote
Mac Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 God bless you, Roxi! It was driving me crazy. Have you read it? Quote
Nollaig Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 No, I just googled the name with the actress, and then got the author's name from the wiki article about the movie. Quote
Mia Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Yeah, it was a good book. I just loved the main character's name, Stanley Yelnats. I'm a bit sad like that. Quote
Mac Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 Yeah, it was a good book. I just loved the main character's name, Stanley Yelnats. I'm a bit sad like that. So did I! And the fact that all the male line are called Stanley! I loved the book. Quote
chesilbeach Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 I loved this book as well. Has anyone read the follow up, Small Steps? It picks up the story of Armpit and X-Ray two years after leaving Camp Green Lake. Although I enjoyed it, I didn't have the same emotional connection to the story as I did with Holes, and I wondered what anyone else thought? Quote
Mac Posted April 19, 2009 Author Posted April 19, 2009 I hadn't heard of this follow-up, no. I wonder if I'll enjoy it as much if it doesn't feature Stanley Yelnats? I'll have a look for it, though. Quote
atticjnr Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 I haven't read the follow up but I have read Holes at school and I thought it was brilliant. Looked forward to every lesson whilst we were reading that book. Haven't seen the film either and don't think I would like to either. I hate it when characters in film adaptions don't match the character in my imagination from the book. Thats the same reason I haven't yet seen the Eragon film and although I have the 'film version' of the book (it was a present), I still havent even looked at the pictures in the middle. This goes abit off topic and is more of an essay. Sorry! Quote
NiceguyEddie Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 I listened to an unabridged version of Holes and thoroughly enjoyed it. A modern classic, I think. And definitely not just for children. Quote
Polly Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Theres a sequel? Could anyone tell me what the title is? Quote
Christie Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 I've seen the film and loved it so I think I will read the book as well! Quote
frankie Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 I've not read Holes, but I just read There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom by the same author and simply loved it. I think I have to go to the library today to borrow Sachar's other books Quote
Anna Begins Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 How strange, this will be either my next read or the one after. Quote
Nollaig Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Haven't read anything by him but I've stuck his name on my wishlist! Quote
Lau_Lou Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 I don't usually come into this section but was reading threads about Harry Potter. Then saw this. NOTHING about this book inspired me to read it, but it was recommended to me by a family member so I gave it a go. I loved it, gave it 5 stars and is an all time favourite. Which shows do not judge a book by its cover. Literally ha! Also liked the film. Watched it in school. Quote
