BattyOldMaid Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I remember my mother watching this, I caught a re-run on G.O.L.D channel and watched the first couple of series, fantastic I thought, god that Peter Egan...pwoar!!! Anyway, there was nothing for the last few weeks, strange I thought, why bother show the first couple of episode and then nothing, maybe I forgot the date? Earlier this week, found it was on, yippee. Turned it on and found it was the same first episodes. what's the point? Batty Quote
Roland Butter Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I remember that one. Richard Briers as the busybody neighbour from hell. It used to make me laugh, anyway. There's not much rhyme or reason to cable TV scheduling, but if you're patient, the rest of it's bound to turn up eventually. Quote
pipread Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I liked that series too, it was really funny, hadn`t realised they were showing it on cable. Quote
Janet Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 I haven't seen this for years either! My Mum always had a thing for Peter Egan! My hubby and I are like the lead character (Richard Briers' one - I can't remember what he was called) used to be with the telephone, but with teaspoons. Hubby is left-handed so if he empties the dishwasher, he puts them in the drawer the wrong way round and I have to turn them the correct way as it drives me mad! Quote
Roland Butter Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Martin something-or-other, I think, Janet. I used to like the photocopier in the spare room, and the minibus trip from hell: "9,742 men went to mow, went to mow a meadow ...." Quote
tonyf Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 This series actually turned up on the TV! I'm a really big fan of Richard Briers because of his Shakespearean roles. Quote
BattyOldMaid Posted February 23, 2009 Author Posted February 23, 2009 Wow, I'm so glad that there are people out there who do like this series. I'm partial to it because of Richard Briers aswell, and yes his name on the series is Martin, also because of it's clean cut humour, no swearing and the like, which is very, very rare in mainstream TV now. I've yet to come across anyone in my husbands social circle or even mine who has seen the programme! I vagluey recall some episode, but I was young when my mother watched it, so I have not seen the entire series, just the first couple of episode. My favourite so far was the one where Howard 'thinks' up of a new theme for the dance, Vicars and Tarts, it turns out it was Paul's idea, but he knew if he suggested it Martin would refuse, since it was Howard's idea, it was accepted. LOL, truly funny! Batty Quote
SueK Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Martin Brice? I used to love this series. Quote
DecisionMostDeadly Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 There were lots of 70's and 80's comedy shows that were great, much better than modern ones I think! Quote
chesilbeach Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 I love this programme. I have the first series on DVD, and I'm planning to get the rest at some point as well. Although it's a sitcom, it also breaks my heart how hard Martin tries to get everyone's friendship and approval, and still fails, while it all comes so easily to Paul. I love the undercurrent of the chemistry between Paul and Anne running throughout the series, and I think Penelope Wilton played it beautifully. You have to mention Howard and Hilda as well, ditzy, annoying, naive yet utterly charming. Great decision to regularly put them in the same jumper or same coat. Very funny. I also love the series just because it's got Richard Briers in, and it's probably my favourite of his television work, running a close second to The Good Life. When I was at school, we studies Arms and the Man by George Bernard Shaw for English, and my teacher had a video recording of Richard Briers and Peter Egan playing the two male leads in a stage production of the play which was brilliant. Sedge Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 My father-in-law will forever refer to Mrs Sedge and myself as 'Howard and Hilda' as one Christmas we made the mistake of visiting wearing matching turquoise fleeces! Quote
